Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor long-term Bitcoin savings, use a self-custodial hardware wallet or another offline-signing setup, and keep only a small spending balance in a hot wallet. Write the recovery phrase down offline, keep secure copies in separate locations, and never share it. Self-custody avoids relying on an exchange to hold your keys, but makes you responsible for protecting and recovering them.
Choose storage based on how you use your Bitcoin
A Bitcoin wallet manages the keys that authorize transactions. The important distinction is who controls those keys and whether they are exposed to internet-connected devices. No storage method is risk-free: each shifts the balance among convenience, security, and recovery responsibility.

| Storage option | Who controls the keys | Internet exposure and practical use | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial exchange or hosted wallet | The provider holds the private keys. The U.S. Department of Justice defines a hosted wallet this way. | Convenient for trading or access through the provider’s service. | You depend on the provider’s security, solvency, withdrawal policies, and continued access. Bitcoin.org advises choosing custodians carefully and enabling strong multifactor authentication. |
| Hot self-custodial wallet | You control the keys. | Connected mobile or desktop wallets are convenient for frequent payments. | Device compromise, malware, phishing, and device loss can put access at risk. Keep only a small working balance and encrypt the wallet or device. |
| Cold storage, including hardware wallets | You control keys kept offline. | Designed for savings rather than frequent transactions. Bitcoin.org describes offline wallets as providing the highest security for savings and hardware wallets as a balance between security and ease of use. | You must protect the recovery information and know how to restore access if the device is lost or fails. |
| Multisignature wallet | Multiple keys or co-signers are required to authorize a transaction. | Can be configured so several independent approvals are needed, such as a 3-of-5 arrangement. | Can reduce reliance on one device or location, but setup, recovery, and inheritance are more complicated. |
Choose by considering transaction frequency, who should control funds, your comfort with backups and recovery, physical risks, whether trusted co-signers are appropriate, and your technical skill. For many long-term holders, a hardware wallet is a practical middle ground: Bitcoin.org calls hardware wallets “the best balance between very high security and ease of use.”
Set up a hardware wallet and its backup
- Separate spending from savings. Decide how much you may need for regular payments and keep that amount in a hot wallet. Put longer-term savings in cold storage.
- Get the device through a trustworthy supply chain. Buy from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. Inspect the packaging and initialize the wallet yourself. Reject a device that arrives with a recovery phrase already written down or asks you to use a phrase supplied by someone else.
- Generate and record the recovery phrase yourself. Create it on the device, then write it down offline. Do not photograph it, store it in cloud storage, type it into a website, or send it in a support chat. A recovery phrase can restore a wallet; anyone who obtains it may be able to spend the funds.
- Make a recovery plan for physical loss. Keep secure physical copies where appropriate and separate them so one fire, theft, or other event cannot destroy every copy. Protect any additional wallet passphrase as carefully as the phrase, and make sure the owner or a suitable recovery plan can retrieve it years later.
- Practice recovery before committing substantial savings. Test that you can restore access using your backup with a small amount first. The sources support checking recoverability, but do not specify a universal testing schedule.
- Use the wallet carefully over time. Keep wallet software and firmware current, check receiving addresses completely, and distrust unsolicited support messages. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible, so do not approve an unexpected transaction.
Know what can go wrong
Provider failure or loss of account access
With a custodian, a breach, insolvency, account freeze, withdrawal restriction, or loss of access can prevent you from using funds when you want. If you retain Bitcoin with a provider, use strong multifactor authentication; avoid making a custodian the sole home for long-term savings if you do not want to depend on its continued operation.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Phishing, malware, and address substitution
A hardware wallet or offline signer can keep keys away from many network attacks, but it cannot make a careless approval safe. Verify the full destination address using the wallet’s trusted display and reject transactions you did not intend to make. Never follow an unsolicited request to disclose a recovery phrase or private key.
Lost device, phrase, or passphrase
A wallet device can fail or disappear; the backup, not the device itself, is what enables recovery. Conversely, a stolen phrase can let someone restore and spend from the wallet. Bitcoin.org states that no one—not developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges—can recover funds permanently lost from a self-custodied wallet. A forgotten passphrase can also block access.

Burglary, coercion, or incapacity
Offline keys do not remove physical threats. Consider discreet storage and whether a passphrase or multisignature arrangement fits your situation; these controls add responsibility and recovery complexity. For death or incapacity, make a lawful inheritance plan that allows the right person to recover access without unnecessarily exposing the seed phrase to others. Bitcoin.org warns that otherwise funds may be unrecoverable by family.

Keep custody responsibilities clear
Bitcoin.org defines a recovery phrase—also called a seed phrase—as “a sequence of words from which a wallet can be fully restored.” Treat it as access to the funds, not as an ordinary password or a note for customer support. In self-custody, you take on responsibility for keys, backups, passwords, and recovery planning; there is no provider to reverse an irreversible transaction or recreate a phrase you have lost.
