When an online prescription arrives, check the medicine and its storage directions before putting it away. There is no single temperature or storage setup that is right for every prescription: follow the product’s label and patient information, and ask the dispensing pharmacist if anything is unclear or the delivery may have been exposed to unsuitable conditions.
What to do when your medicine arrives
- Check the parcel and medicine. Confirm that the medicine and strength match your prescription information, and look for visibly damaged or compromised packaging. Contact the dispensing pharmacy before using it if something is wrong.
- Find the product’s storage instructions. Check the dispensing label, manufacturer packaging, and patient information for temperature, light, moisture, and after-opening requirements. NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service (SPS) notes that manufacturers define ambient storage ranges differently, so general room-temperature advice cannot replace the product’s directions (NHS SPS temperature management guidance).
- Store refrigerated medicines promptly. Put them into the required storage conditions as soon as possible. If the parcel seems unexpectedly warm, frozen, delayed, or otherwise exposed to conditions outside the instructions, contact the dispensing pharmacy for a product-specific assessment before using the medicine.
Do not assume a cold pack means the medicine was kept correctly. NHS SPS warns that direct contact with cool packs can make medicines excessively cold or freeze them; an ordinary ice pack is not automatically suitable for transport (NHS SPS guidance on temperature management). The intended conditions need to be maintained through dispatch, transit, delivery, and transfer to storage.
Where to keep medicines at home
Medicines without special storage conditions
For most medicines, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends a cool, dry place, such as a dresser drawer, storage box, closet shelf, or kitchen cabinet. Avoid damp bathrooms and places near sinks or hot appliances, where humidity or heat may affect the medicine. Keep it away from children and anyone for whom it was not prescribed (FDA guidance on expired medicines and storage).
Keep the medicine in its original labeled packaging where practical. That helps keep its identity, strength, instructions, and expiry information together. A lockable medicine box may help restrict access in some households, but it does not control temperature or humidity; check that its location suits the medicine’s storage directions.

Medicines with specific temperature, light, or moisture requirements
Follow the exact conditions on the product’s label and patient information, including any directions that apply after opening. NHS SPS gives 15°C to 25°C as an ideal for ambient storage areas in its professional guidance, but manufacturers may define ambient ranges differently. That figure is not a universal storage requirement for prescriptions and does not override a product’s instructions (NHS SPS ambient storage guidance).
If the instructions are unclear, ask the dispensing pharmacist or prescriber rather than moving the medicine to a different storage condition based on general advice.

What to do after a possible temperature excursion
If a medicine may have become too warm, too cold, or frozen during delivery or storage, do not decide it is usable based on appearance or a general rule. Check its instructions and contact the dispensing pharmacist or prescriber promptly with details of what happened and, if known, how long the exposure lasted. Stability depends on the individual product and the exposure; the sources cited here do not establish whether a particular medicine remains suitable after an unknown excursion.
NHS SPS provides professional guidance and a tool for refrigerated-medicine stability questions, but these are not a universal consumer determination of whether a medicine can be used. Follow the product-specific advice you receive.

Check that an online pharmacy is legitimate
For UK readers, NHS advises checking that an online pharmacy is registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). It warns that unregistered websites may sell medicines that are out of date, diluted, fake, or unsuitable. NHS gives separate registration advice for online doctor services, too; pharmacy registration checks should not be treated as a global regulator check (NHS advice on buying medicine online).

Disposal rules vary by location. In the United States, the FDA prefers take-back locations or prepaid mail-back envelopes for most unused or expired medicines. If neither is readily available, check whether the medicine is on the FDA flush list; otherwise follow the agency’s household disposal instructions. Some products, including certain sprays and lozenges, may have specific directions, so check the label or ask a pharmacist (FDA medicine disposal guidance).
Outside the U.S., follow local pharmacy or medicines-regulator guidance rather than applying the FDA flush list automatically.
