What you should do depends on what you mean by “stop a payment”: cancel a payment you scheduled toward your Amex bill, stop a merchant’s recurring card charge, or challenge a charge that has already appeared. For U.S. Amex bill payments, cancellation through the online account may be available only when a same-day payment is marked “Processing” and the “Cancel Payment” option appears.
First, identify which payment you want to stop
| What you mean | Who initiated it | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A payment toward your Amex bill | You scheduled it through Amex | Open the payment details in your Amex account and check whether cancellation is available. |
| A subscription or other recurring card charge | A merchant charges your card | Cancel with the merchant under your agreement and applicable local rules; keep written proof. |
| A charge already made, or billed after you canceled | A merchant charged your card | Contact the merchant first. If the issue remains, consider disputing the transaction with Amex. |
These routes address different problems. Canceling an Amex bill payment does not cancel a subscription, and disputing a charge is not the same as stopping a scheduled payment.
Cancel a payment you scheduled to Amex (U.S.)
- Sign in to your American Express online account.
- Find the payment and open or expand its details.
- If it is a payment for today and its status is “Processing,” look for “Cancel Payment.”
- If the option appears, select it and follow the on-screen instructions.
Amex says that if “Cancel Payment” is not shown, that payment is not eligible to be canceled through this online route. The U.S. guidance describes status-based eligibility, not a guaranteed cancellation deadline for every submitted payment. A payment marked “Processing” is not the same as a posted transaction. Stop a merchant’s recurring charge
Contact the merchant and cancel the service or recurring payment according to your agreement and the rules that apply where you live. Ask for written confirmation, save the cancellation request and any response, and note the effective date. If a charge appears after that date, those records can help explain the issue to the merchant and, if needed, to Amex.

Do not assume that canceling your Amex card or changing its details ends the merchant agreement. Amex’s Canadian Corporate Cardmember Agreement says recurring charges may, depending on the submission system and circumstances, be applied to a replacement card. That agreement is specific to Canada; its contract terms should not be treated as U.S. terms. American Express Canada Corporate Cardmember Agreement (2024 PDF)
Challenge a charge that went through
- Contact the merchant first and explain what is wrong—for example, that you canceled but were charged again.
- If the problem is unresolved, sign in to your U.S. Amex account and select the transaction.
- Choose “Dispute this Charge” and follow the prompts to submit the details.
- Keep the merchant correspondence and cancellation confirmation in case they are relevant to the dispute.
A dispute asks Amex to review a transaction; it does not itself cancel a subscription or guarantee that the charge will be reversed. Amex’s U.S. guidance directs cardmembers to contact the merchant first. American Express: How to Dispute an American Express Charge

Country-specific payment cancellation timing
United States
The U.S. cancellation guidance cited here says a payment scheduled for today may be cancelable when its status is “Processing” and the cancellation control appears. It does not state the Canadian cutoff below as a U.S. rule. American Express U.S. payment cancellation FAQ
Canada
Amex Canada says a cardmember can cancel a payment or change its date or amount up to one calendar day before the scheduled payment date, before 8 p.m. Eastern Time. This is Canadian guidance and should not be applied automatically to U.S. accounts. American Express Canada payment cancellation FAQ
