You can start an online thrift store by choosing a focused niche, testing a small supply of inventory, and building a repeatable process for listing and shipping each item. Before selling, check the business, tax, and product-safety rules where you operate: they vary by location and by what you sell. Reselling also takes hands-on work—sourcing, inspecting, photographing, pricing, marketing, and fulfillment—so begin at a scale you can manage.
1. Choose a focused niche
Decide what kinds of secondhand goods you want to sell and who is likely to buy them. A focused store might specialize in vintage clothing, used books, home décor, or a defined style of accessories. A niche helps guide what you source, how you describe items, and where you look for customers.
Test demand before buying heavily. Look at comparable listings and sold items where that information is available, and note which brands, styles, sizes, or price points appear relevant to your intended shoppers. Treat early findings as a starting point, not proof that a product will sell for you.
2. Choose a selling model and map the costs
Decide whether you will buy items outright and resell them, sell other people’s goods on consignment, accept donations, or combine approaches. These are different operating models: buying inventory ties up your cash, while consignment requires clear agreements about ownership, pricing, payment, and unsold goods. A business that buys stock is not automatically a charitable thrift store.

Sketch the costs for the items and channels you are considering. Include inventory, storage, your time, platform and payment charges, packaging, and shipping. There is no universal startup budget or guaranteed profit margin; the right plan depends on your category, sourcing terms, location, and sales channel.
3. Check the rules where you will operate
Requirements depend on your operating location, business model, and products. Check with the relevant local business and tax authorities about business naming and registration, business structure, licenses, resale permits, tax collection, and insurance. If you sell across borders or into another jurisdiction, check which rules apply to those transactions too. Do not assume that a particular structure, permit, or tax rule applies everywhere.
For U.S. sellers, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says its laws apply to people selling consumer products, including thrift and consignment stores. Its resale and thrift store information center links to relevant guidance. Seek local professional advice when the rules or your responsibilities are unclear.

4. Set up records and a separate workflow
Secondhand shops often handle one-of-a-kind items, so give each item a record and a storage location as soon as it arrives. A spreadsheet or inventory system can track:
- Item identifier, source, acquisition cost, and date received
- Condition, measurements, and any inspection or repair notes
- Listing title, description, photos, price, and sales channel
- Storage location, sale date, fees, packing, and shipping details
Keep business income and expenses organized separately from personal spending. Accurate records make it easier to find a sold item, review actual costs, and decide whether a sourcing route is worth repeating.
5. Source a small initial collection
Potential sources include thrift stores, flea markets, estate or garage sales, auctions, private sellers, wholesale lots, and liquidation. Compare them by unit cost, quality consistency, uniqueness, minimum quantities, ability to inspect items, and the time required to find usable stock. The cheapest item is not necessarily the best buy if it needs extensive work or is difficult to sell.

Supply and condition can be unpredictable, particularly for vintage goods. Start with a manageable collection, inspect items before purchase when possible, and read online lot descriptions carefully. Check photos, quantities, condition terms, and shipping charges rather than assuming a bulk lot will contain saleable inventory.
6. Inspect and prepare each item safely
Check an item’s condition before listing it. Clean or repair it only when doing so is safe and appropriate, and make a note of any remaining wear, missing parts, or functional issues. Verify authenticity when it matters to the product and the claims you plan to make.
For U.S. sales, check whether an item has been recalled before offering it. The CPSC’s February 2025 Resellers Guide to Selling Safer Products states, “It is illegal to sell any recalled product.” The guide says the CPSC does not require resellers to test every product, but sellers remain responsible for compliance. It specifically cautions against selling broken, wobbly, unstable, or incomplete nursery and durable infant products. Use current CPSC guidance for children’s goods, electrical items, and other regulated categories; elsewhere, consult the relevant product-safety authority.

7. Photograph, describe, and price transparently
Use clear photos that show the whole item, identifying details, and any visible flaws. Write an accurate description with useful measurements, material or brand information where known, condition, and included parts. Do not present an item as flawless or authentic unless you can support that description.
Set prices with the full cost of selling in mind: acquisition, platform and payment charges, packaging, shipping, and your labor. Compare relevant listings and sales where available, but account for differences in condition, size, and demand. No single markup or pricing formula works for every category.
8. Select a sales channel
A standalone online shop gives you a dedicated branded home, while a marketplace can put listings in front of people already searching there. Neither route is universally best. Compare the actual channels you are considering on these points:

- How customers discover products and how much control you have over the brand and presentation
- Fees, listing rules, seller eligibility, and any category restrictions
- Inventory tools, order management, and the effort of keeping listings accurate across channels
- How orders, customer questions, returns, and fulfillment are handled
Before committing, review each provider’s current seller terms and fees. Selling on more than one channel may widen exposure, but it also adds work: a unique item must be removed from other listings as soon as it sells.
9. Plan packaging and shipping
Choose packing materials that protect each item and suit its size, weight, and fragility. Decide how you will handle dispatch times, shipping charges, and buyer questions before the first order arrives. Unique or fragile goods may need individual packing rather than a single standard package.
A digital shipping scale is an optional tool if you need to weigh parcels while preparing orders. It is not a requirement; choose a workflow that lets you determine shipping details accurately and communicate them clearly.
10. Launch small, then refine the operation
Publish a manageable assortment and keep track of what attracts views, what sells, and what remains unsold. Review actual costs and customer feedback alongside the sales data. Use what you learn to adjust sourcing, descriptions, photography, prices, and the mix of products you list.
