How to Start an Interior Design Business: Five Steps From Day One

Start an interior design business by defining your offer, validating local demand, planning costs, checking location-specific requirements, and preparing finances and contracts before taking clients.

Start by defining the design services you will sell and the clients you want to serve. Then validate local demand, estimate costs, choose a business structure, check location-specific rules, set up financial and operating systems, and sign a written agreement before taking on work. This five-step framework is for aspiring U.S.-based independent designers; registration, licensing, tax, and insurance requirements depend on your location and activities.

1. Define your services and ideal client

Be specific about what a client can hire you to do. You might offer consultations, full-service residential design, commercial design, furnishing selection and purchasing, or project administration. You can combine services, but spell out which tasks you handle and where your responsibility ends.

Choose a target client and project type to guide your offer. For example, a consultation package should state what the client receives, how much time is included, and whether recommendations or follow-up are part of the service. A furnishing project should clarify who selects, orders, tracks, receives, and handles issues with merchandise. ASID’s contract materials identify design concept, merchandise selection, purchasing, administration, and compensation as distinct matters to define in an engagement: ASID Contracts.

A niche is a starting hypothesis, not proof of demand or profitability. Check whether local customers need the service and how nearby firms position themselves before spending heavily on branding or inventory. The SBA recommends market research to identify customers and competitive analysis to understand how a business can stand out: SBA business-planning guidance.

2. Validate demand and plan the finances

Speak with potential clients, review local competitors, and describe your offer in plain language. These conversations can reveal whether your proposed service solves a problem, what clients expect it to include, and where they find designers. Use what you learn to refine the scope before committing to substantial costs.

Estimate costs before setting a budget

Build a written plan with estimated startup and ongoing expenses. Include business formation fees, equipment and software, insurance, marketing, professional services, travel, and a cash reserve. These are planning categories, not a universal estimate: the sources cited here do not establish a typical startup cost for an interior design business. The SBA provides guidance on market research, business plans, and calculating startup costs, but your figures should reflect your location and business model.

Set fees around the work

Decide how you will charge only after defining the scope, expected time, deliverables, purchasing responsibilities, and project administration. ASID treats compensation and fee structure as key contract topics, but the sources cited here do not establish a standard hourly rate or universal pricing formula. State the fee model, payment schedule, and what the fee covers in your proposal and client agreement.

3. Choose a structure and check local requirements

Select a legal structure after weighing tax treatment, filing obligations, fundraising options, and personal-liability implications. The SBA explains that structure affects these considerations and suggests seeking professional advice when useful: SBA launch guidance. Check whether your chosen business name is available and determine which registrations apply to your structure and location.

Do not assume that interior designers face one nationwide licensing rule. The permits and registrations that apply can depend on the services you provide and where you operate. Check relevant state, county, and city offices, as well as professional regulators for your jurisdiction and activities. The SBA likewise cautions that licenses and permits depend on business activity and location.

  • Confirm business registration and name requirements for your chosen structure.
  • Check applicable tax registrations, licenses, and permits with the relevant government offices.
  • Identify recurring tax filings and deadlines, and include them in your business calendar.

4. Separate finances and set up risk and operations

Keep business records distinct

Set up a business bank account and an orderly bookkeeping process so you can track income, expenses, invoices, and tax obligations separately from personal finances. The SBA lists business banking among its launch tasks. Build a process for recording receipts and reconciling transactions, and decide how you will monitor cash available for upcoming expenses.

Match insurance to your work

Review coverage against your actual services, client visits, property exposure, purchasing activities, and any employees. The SBA lists general liability, professional liability, commercial property, home-based business coverage, and business-owner policies among common forms of business insurance. Required coverage and appropriate policy terms vary; discuss your risks and exclusions with a licensed insurance agent and verify local legal requirements.

Create the delivery workflow

Before accepting projects, establish a simple process for client intake, proposals, project schedules, approvals, purchasing records, invoices, bookkeeping, and file storage. Keep a portfolio of work you have permission to show. These systems can be basic at launch, but they should support the service you promised and make decisions, expenses, and approvals easy to document.

5. Prepare the contract and find your first clients

Use a written agreement before work begins

Put the terms of each engagement in writing before starting work. ASID’s residential and commercial contract packages cover services, compensation and fee structure, merchandise selection, purchasing, administration, termination, and dispute resolution. Use terms suited to the specific project, and have a qualified lawyer review your agreement for your jurisdiction and business model. ASID quotes Alan M. Siegel, Hon. FASID: “Every interior designer must enter into a written agreement with a client; it shouldn’t be an optional activity. NOT having a written agreement is an invitation for a dispute.”

Make it easy for the right clients to hire you

Build a portfolio from work you have permission to display and create a straightforward web presence that explains your services, process, and geographic area. A clear offer and examples of your work help prospective clients understand whether you are a fit. The SBA includes registering a domain among online-presence considerations and recommends a marketing plan as part of managing a business: SBA launch guidance and Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational information for interior designers.
