How to Start a Dog Walking Business for Full-Time Income

A full-time dog-walking business depends on recurring local demand, efficient routes, realistic pricing, and careful expense and tax planning—not on an industry-average revenue figure.

A dog-walking business can become full-time work, but full-time revenue is not the same as a dependable salary. To make the numbers work, build recurring local demand, keep travel between bookings manageable, price for both paid and unpaid work, and budget for operating costs and taxes. The available income figures are gross revenue reported by Pet Sitters International (PSI) member pet-sitting businesses—not a forecast of what a new solo dog walker will earn.

Can a dog-walking business provide full-time income?

It can, but the result depends on the customers you attract, the service area and schedule you can cover, and how efficiently you fit paid walks around travel and administration. The strongest published figure in the available data is an association survey of pet-sitting businesses, not a typical solo dog-walker salary.

PSI reported that U.S. member pet-sitting businesses averaged US$112,423 in gross revenue in 2025, compared with US$100,537 in 2023, a reported 12% increase. The survey includes businesses offering pet sitting as well as dog walking, and respondents included solo operators and businesses with partners or staff. Gross revenue is before expenses, taxes, and owner compensation; it should not be read as take-home pay or as a likely result for a new business. PSI’s 2026 announcement describes the survey and its findings.

PSI’s broader income page says U.S. respondent businesses averaged 113 households and 4,200 visits in 2025. Those are survey averages, not targets every operator can or should reproduce: the type and frequency of service, geography, business size, and working hours differ. PSI’s income overview also notes that location affects rates and the number of visits a full-time operator can complete affects revenue.

PSI reported that 68% of respondents expected revenue growth in the coming year. That is what respondents anticipated, not an independently verified forecast. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ animal-care worker pay data describe employees’ occupational wages, not an owner-operator’s business revenue or net income, so they are not a substitute for a dog-walking business income estimate. BLS occupational information covers the employee category.

How to estimate whether your route can support you

Work backward from the income you need rather than adopting a national revenue average. First estimate how many paid walks you can complete on a normal working day after allowing for travel, client handoffs, messages, breaks, and business administration. Then compare the revenue from that schedule with the costs and taxes you will need to cover. This is a planning exercise, not a published industry benchmark.

iYoShop Hands Free Dog Leash with Zipper Pouch, Large, 25-120 lbs, Black
  • Removable Zipper Pouch: Easily store and access your smartphone, keys, poop bags, dog treats in the removable zipper pouch. It’s a good add-on for the leash for training, walking, jogging, hiking training and running
  • Double shock absorbers: Feature 2 shock-absorbers to help provide a bit of “give” in the leash. This can help reduce the amount of tugging both you and your dog will experience as you cruise down the road
  • Durable clip - Enjoy a 2” heavy duty clip for added safety and handy D-ring to attach your favorite dog training clicker or dog poop bag holder.
  • 2 Extra handles for extra control: Easily guide your pup on your runs through the park with the built in waist handle. Then switch to the amazing traffic handle when you need tighter control of your pet.
  • Hand free waist wearing: Enjoy a waist dog running leash belt that lets you freely use your phone or read a newspaper without feeling restrained by your Dog's movements
  • Map the service area: choose neighborhoods and hours you can reliably serve. A cluster of nearby recurring clients may make a schedule more workable than the same number of bookings spread across a wide area.
  • Calculate paid capacity: count realistic visits, not just the hours you expect to walk dogs. Include drive or transit time, access arrangements, customer updates, cancellations, and gaps between appointments.
  • Set a local rate: compare nearby dog walkers, pet sitters, and app-based services, then account for travel, payment fees, supplies, insurance, taxes, and unpaid work. A national rate would not reflect your local market or route costs.
  • Track the result: record inquiries, bookings, repeat customers, cancellations, travel time, expenses, and revenue per working hour. Use those records to revise your schedule and pricing as demand becomes clearer.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recommends market research and competitive analysis to identify customers and understand how a business can stand out. Its market-research guide offers a practical starting point. PSI’s workload and visit information reinforces why route capacity matters, but neither source establishes a universal number of walks or rate that guarantees a full-time income.

How to start a dog-walking business

  1. Check demand in the area you can serve. Identify likely customers and the recurring times they need walks. Compare local services and ask potential clients about schedules, walk duration, and the problems they want solved. SBA’s market research and competitive analysis guide explains how to assess demand and competitors.
  2. Define the service and route. Decide which days and hours you will work, how long walks will last, how far you will travel, whether you will take holiday bookings, and whether you will offer drop-ins as well as walks. Estimate paid visits only after accounting for travel, handoffs, communication, and admin.
  3. Build a pricing model for your market. Compare local prices, but also calculate what each booking must contribute toward costs and unpaid time. Revisit the price if a route, service length, or customer schedule makes the work less efficient than expected.
  4. Choose a business structure and register as required. A business structure affects taxes, paperwork, financing options, and personal liability. The SBA says a sole proprietorship is simple to form but does not separate business and personal liabilities. An LLC or another structure is not a blanket guarantee against liability; consider your circumstances and obtain locally appropriate legal or tax advice. See the SBA’s business-structure overview.
  5. Check licenses, permits, and local rules. Requirements and fees vary by state and locality. Contact the relevant state, county, and city agencies to confirm what applies to your activity and location. BLS notes that many states require self-employed animal-care and service workers to have a business license, but that does not establish one nationwide dog-walker license rule. Start with the SBA license and permit guide and verify with your local government.
  6. Set up business records and tax compliance. Keep records of income and expenses from the beginning, and confirm your federal, state, and local obligations. IRS Publication 334 explains tax topics for small businesses, including sole proprietors. The IRS says an ongoing trade or business can count as self-employment even if it is not full-time; a profit motive and continued business activity matter. Payments received through apps may still be taxable and reportable. Review the IRS guidance on gig-work taxes and get qualified tax help if your circumstances call for it.
  7. Review insurance and client terms. Consider risks from handling dogs and entering clients’ homes. Compare policy coverage, exclusions, limits, covered activities, and price with an appropriately licensed insurance agent. Do not assume a general liability policy covers an animal in your care; verify the policy wording. Use clear written service terms and maintain client records for access instructions, emergency contacts, dog-handling needs, and changes to service.
  8. Budget for practical startup needs. PSI’s sample checklist names items such as a pet first-aid course, business supplies, advertising, a service contract, insurance, business-phone costs, and comfortable shoes. It treats needs and costs as variable, not as a required package. PSI’s startup checklist can help you identify budget categories.
  9. Build repeat bookings before relying on the business full time. Track which inquiries become clients, how often customers rebook, how cancellations affect the week, and how much time each route consumes. Expand capacity only when demand and the schedule support it.

What to compare before choosing a structure or insurance

There is no single structure or policy that suits every dog walker. Use the actual business activity and location to guide the choice, and confirm details with qualified local professionals or agencies.

Business structure Formation and ongoing paperwork, tax treatment, personal-liability exposure, and financing implications. The SBA identifies these as factors affected by business structure. Requirements and consequences depend on the structure and circumstances; no form should be treated as eliminating all liability.
Insurance Covered activities, exclusions, limits, price, and whether the policy addresses the work you actually perform. PSI lists pet-sitter liability insurance as a possible startup cost, not as a universal legal requirement or prescribed coverage amount. Confirm coverage directly with the insurer or a licensed agent.

Equipment and client agreements

Ask each client what equipment their dog is accustomed to and agree on what will be used for walks. A leash can be useful as backup or standardized business equipment, but many clients will prefer the dog’s familiar leash; do not assume you must supply one. PSI’s checklist includes business supplies, while BLS describes dog walking as a common part of pet-sitting work.

In a written service agreement, make the practical details clear: scheduled service, access arrangements, cancellation and change terms, emergency contacts, and any dog-handling instructions. PSI’s sample checklist includes service contracts and background checks among possible startup expenses, but it does not set one mandatory contract or screening standard.
