To spot a crypto presale scam, verify the project and its promoters through independently confirmed channels, read what rights the token actually gives you, and treat guaranteed returns as a warning sign. Protect your wallet by never sharing its seed phrase or private key, checking every signature and token approval before you authorize it, and responding quickly if you suspect access has been compromised. No checklist can guarantee that a presale is legitimate.
How to tell whether a crypto presale is legitimate
A polished website, active social accounts, or an impressive white paper is not proof that an offering is legitimate. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov notes that it is relatively easy to create an impressive-looking initial coin offering that may still be a scam. Treat presentation as a starting point for questions, not evidence of trustworthiness.

Verify the project and the people behind it
Find the project’s official website and communications independently. Do not assume a URL or account is genuine because it appeared in an unsolicited message, search ad, or paid promotion. Compare details across channels you reached independently, and be wary of lookalike domains or accounts.

Understand what the token gives you
Read the project materials for the token’s actual rights and intended use. Ask what the token entitles its holder to, if anything, and whether those rights are clearly stated. Consider how sale proceeds are supposed to be used and whether the project explains how the funds will support its stated purpose.
Be especially cautious about promises of fixed or guaranteed investment returns. The CFTC states: “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy.” That warning applies even when the claim is wrapped in technical language or presented as a limited-time presale opportunity.

Presale scam warning signs
- Guaranteed returns: No investment outcome is guaranteed; a promise of certain profits is a serious warning sign.
- Pressure to act immediately: A countdown or claim that you must buy now is not a substitute for checking the project, its promoters, and the token’s terms.
- Unverified identities or claims: Treat anonymous or difficult-to-check promoters, purported partners, and endorsements as unresolved risks rather than proof of legitimacy.
- Vague token rights or use of proceeds: If project materials do not explain what the token does or how funds will be used, you cannot assess what you are being asked to buy.
- Requests for wallet secrets: A website or supposed support agent asking for your seed phrase, passphrase, or private key is a reason to stop—not a legitimate step in joining a presale.
- Signatures you cannot explain: Do not authorize a wallet request simply because a site calls it “connect,” “verify,” or “claim.” Read what the wallet is asking you to approve.
How a presale site can put your wallet at risk
A malicious link can lead to a phishing site designed to steal credentials or prompt you to authorize a harmful wallet action. Connecting a wallet is not always the only risk: a signature may grant permission for a later transaction even when no assets visibly leave your wallet at that moment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSignatures and token approvals are different from a simple connection
A permit signature can be an off-chain message that pre-authorizes a future transaction. Because it may not immediately move funds, it can be easy to mistake for a harmless login step. A token approval, meanwhile, can give a smart contract permission to spend specified tokens. If you do not understand what a request authorizes, reject it and leave the site.

Never enter or disclose a seed phrase, passphrase, or private key in response to a website, message, or support request. Those secrets can give someone control of the wallet. A hardware wallet can reduce some online exposure, but it cannot make a malicious signature or approval safe; review each request on the device before signing.

- Stop contact and further activity. Do not follow more instructions from the suspected scammer or approve another transaction to “fix” the problem.
- Check wallet permissions. Review token approvals through a trusted wallet interface or a blockchain explorer. If you find an approval you do not recognize, revoke it using a trusted permission-management tool. Official guidance gives Etherscan and Revoke.cash as examples; reach them through verified sources and inspect any transaction before signing.
- Move funds if the seed phrase was exposed. If someone may know the seed phrase, transfer remaining assets to a new wallet with a seed phrase that has not been exposed. Revoking an approval does not make a compromised seed phrase safe.
- Secure associated accounts. Change reused passwords and secure accounts linked to the incident, especially email or exchange accounts that could enable further access.
- Contact your provider and report the incident. Use a verified official channel for your exchange, wallet provider, or other crypto service, and report to the relevant local authority. Guidance differs by jurisdiction, so use the appropriate authority where you live.
Do not pay a stranger who claims they can recover stolen cryptocurrency, particularly if they demand an upfront fee. Completed blockchain transfers are often not reversible, though a provider may have options when an account or wallet on its platform is involved. Recovery is not assured.

A hardware wallet can reduce exposure to some online attacks by keeping signing keys offline, and it is a reasonable option for people who want offline custody. It does not verify a project, prevent a user from approving a harmful transaction, or remove phishing and smart-contract risks. Some devices may show limited transaction details, so check the request carefully and do not sign what you cannot understand.

Where to get help and report a scam
Use official channels for your wallet or exchange provider and your local authorities. The European Banking Authority and UK National Crime Agency both provide crypto-fraud guidance, but reporting routes and legal protections depend on where you live. U.S. CFTC and SEC investor materials concern U.S. contexts; they do not determine how a token will be treated under every country’s laws.
