To spot a suspicious loan app, watch for guaranteed approval, upfront payment demands, pressure to act immediately, unexpected loan texts, and app permissions or terms that do not add up. Verify the lender with the regulator in your location using contact details you find independently; do not pay or share sensitive information until you have checked.

1. Treat guaranteed approval and upfront fees as serious warning signs

A lender that promises approval before reviewing your credit or application—and asks you to pay first—is a strong scam warning sign. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says scammers may describe the charge as a processing, insurance, application, or paperwork fee. Its consumer guidance puts it plainly: “Legitimate lenders will not promise you a loan or other credit without knowing your credit history, but demand you pay them first.”

Do not pay for a promise of a loan. An advance fee by itself does not prove fraud in every situation or jurisdiction: the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) says authorized firms may charge disclosed fees in specified circumstances. Verify the firm and the fee independently before paying.

2. Slow down when a message creates urgency or asks for sensitive information

An unexpected text about a loan you never applied for may be phishing. Do not reply, open its links, or provide personal, banking, or financial details through the message. Pressure to act quickly, requests for money, unusual payment methods, and claims to represent a known business are additional warning signs.

Look up the lender through an official regulator or a contact channel you locate independently. Do not use a phone number, link, or payment instructions supplied in the suspicious message. The FTC explains how to recognize and handle unexpected loan texts in its guidance on fake loan text scams; the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) also outlines ways to recognize a scam.

3. Verify the lender with the right regulator

Search the regulator’s official records yourself, then compare the firm’s name and contact details with what the regulator lists. A scammer may impersonate a real lender, so a matching name alone is not enough; use the regulator’s independently obtained contact information to confirm you are dealing with the authorized firm.

In the United States

The FTC advises consumers to check with their state banking or financial-services regulator. State oversight and the appropriate agency can vary, so use the relevant state regulator’s official website and contact information.

In the United Kingdom

Use the FCA’s Firm Checker to check whether the firm is authorized and whether its contact details match. The FCA says it receives hundreds of loan-fee fraud reports every year. Its page, updated March 31, 2026, reports victims’ average loss as £255; that figure applies to reported UK loan-fee fraud, not all loan-app scams or other countries.

4. Check the listing, loan terms, and app permissions

Read the app-store listing and the loan terms before installing or applying. On Google Play, the platform policy for personal-loan apps calls for disclosure of the repayment period, maximum annual percentage rate (APR), a representative example of total cost, and a privacy policy. The policy also prohibits covered loan apps from accessing specified sensitive data, including contacts and photos.

These are Google Play policy requirements, not a universal legal checklist or proof that an app or lender is legitimate. Store availability does not guarantee safety. Treat missing or unclear disclosures, mismatched firm details, and requests for data unrelated to a loan as reasons to stop and verify. Review the current Google Play financial-services policy for its requirements.

5. Report the scam and respond quickly if you shared information

United States

  • Report an advance-fee loan scam or related information at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  • For an unexpected loan text, use your phone’s report-junk feature or forward the message to 7726 (SPAM), then report it to the FTC.
  • If you think personal information was stolen, follow the FTC’s steps at IdentityTheft.gov.

United Kingdom

  • Report suspected loan-fee fraud to the FCA.
  • If you lost money, the FCA also directs victims to Report Fraud.

Elsewhere

Use the financial regulator or law-enforcement reporting service for your country. Reporting systems and lender authorization rules differ by location; the US and UK routes above are not interchangeable.
