How to Spend Less Time on Facebook and Instagram Without Deleting Your Accounts

Keep your Facebook and Instagram accounts while reducing app time with a baseline, realistic limits, quieter notifications, and device controls.

You can keep both accounts and spend less time in their apps by measuring your current use, choosing a realistic limit, reducing the prompts that pull you back in, and adding phone-level controls if reminders are too easy to ignore. Start with a few ordinary days of usage data, then review the result after a week. There is no evidence-based daily target that suits every adult, and cutting time on these two apps does not necessarily cut total screen time.

1. Find out when and why you use the apps

Before setting a limit, check the activity or screen-time report in each app or on your phone. Meta has described activity dashboards for Facebook and Instagram, but its published menu instructions date to 2018; labels and locations may have changed. Look in the apps’ current Settings for activity, time-management, or screen-time controls, or use your phone’s usage report.

Check several ordinary days rather than relying on one unusually busy or quiet day. Note more than total minutes: record when you open each app and what prompted you—messages, posting, work, habit, boredom, or a notification. That helps you distinguish useful account activity from automatic checking. If you depend on one app for work or essential communication, account for that before choosing a target.

2. Choose a limit you can actually follow

Use your baseline to pick a first step that feels achievable. You might reduce a regular session, set a daily reminder, or reserve certain periods—such as meals or the first hour after waking—for time away from the apps. No source establishes one best daily number for adults, so treat your first target as an experiment, not a universal prescription.

Meta has described dashboards, daily reminders, notification controls, and other time-management tools. If a reminder appears in your app, use it as a cue to pause and decide whether to continue; it is not the same as a hard block. Because app menus change, search current Settings rather than relying on older instructions that name “Your Activity” on Instagram or “Your Time on Facebook” on Facebook.

3. Turn down the prompts that trigger checking

Disable nonessential push notifications or schedule quiet periods during work, study, meals, or bedtime. Keep alerts you rely on for messages or account security, if the app lets you separate them. Fewer interruptions can make it easier to stick to your plan without closing or deactivating either account.

Meta describes Quiet Mode for teen Instagram accounts as turning off notifications and sending automatic replies during a configured overnight period. Availability and controls can differ by age, app version, and location; do not assume that this teen feature or its exact behavior applies to an adult account.

4. Add phone-level limits when app reminders are too easy to dismiss

Apple Screen Time and Android Digital Wellbeing provide built-in ways to manage app use, such as app limits or focus and downtime tools, depending on the device and software version. Find them in your phone’s Settings by searching for “Screen Time” on an iPhone or “Digital Wellbeing” on Android. The precise menus and available options vary, particularly across Android manufacturers.

Phone-level controls can add friction, but they are not guaranteed locks. Associated Press reporting on built-in controls notes that limits may be easy to bypass. If you repeatedly override a limit, consider whether a scheduled focus period, a different target, or an optional third-party blocker would be more workable. Before installing a blocker, check its current price, supported devices, privacy terms, and accessibility; no product test establishes one as best here.

Control What it does Strength and trade-off
In-app dashboard or reminder Shows activity or prompts you to pause, where available. Useful for awareness; a reminder is easy to dismiss and is not a restriction.
Notification controls Reduces or schedules alerts from the apps. Can reduce interruption without limiting account access; separate essential alerts where possible.
Phone-level limits or focus tools Applies limits or quiet periods through Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing features, depending on the device. Adds friction across app use, but exact features vary and limits may be overridden.
Third-party blocker May add scheduled blocking or extra steps before reopening an app. Optional; verify current cost, device support, and privacy terms before choosing one.

5. Review after a week and watch for substitution

After seven days, compare your app use with your baseline and ask whether the limit fit your routine. If you consistently exceed it, adjust the target or identify the situations that lead to checking; if it is too restrictive for important messages or work, loosen it and use notification controls instead.

Also check what replaced the time. A randomized student study published in PLOS ONE in 2022 found that participants under a strict limit on Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat substituted instant messaging; total digital activity did not fall. A UK government qualitative report published in 2026 likewise described adolescents shifting toward messaging, television, gaming, YouTube, or school activity. Reducing use of two apps can be worthwhile on its own, but it should not be mistaken for a guaranteed reduction in total device time.

What limits can—and cannot—tell you about wellbeing

The evidence does not support promising that fewer minutes on Facebook or Instagram will reliably improve mental health, attention, or sleep. A 2021 randomized study of 76 participants set a 50% reduction target for mobile Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube against a 10% target. Because the comparison group also reduced use, the intended difference weakened; researchers found no effect on the measured outcomes. Participants reported fewer negative emotions, but positive emotions did not increase and sustained-attention task performance remained stable.

A separate 2021 study of 132 participants reported a small wellbeing improvement after a one-week break from Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. That short-term finding is not a guarantee or a prescription. These studies used different participants and designs, and neither identifies a daily limit that is right for everyone.

Special case: teen accounts and location-specific rules

Teen tools and policies are not interchangeable with adult settings. Meta’s 2024 teen-safety page describes daily limits, scheduled breaks, parental supervision, and Instagram Take A Break reminders. Meta also reported that over 90% of U.S. teen adopters were still using daily limits 30 days after first adopting them. That is Meta’s retention statistic; it does not show how many minutes use fell or establish a wellbeing effect.

In an August 27, 2026 update, Meta said a judge approved an agreement describing a default two-hour daily limit cumulative across Facebook and Instagram for under-18s in participating U.S. states and territories, a midnight-to-6 a.m. restriction on feed viewing and posting, and notifications muted from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Meta said direct messages are excluded from the specified Night Mode, Time Limit, and School Mode restrictions. This is a reported, jurisdiction-specific agreement for minors—not a general adult or worldwide setting—and the announcement alone does not establish that every measure is already active for every eligible account.
