How to Set Stop-Loss and Take-Profit Orders for Ethereum Trades

To set exits for an Ethereum trade, first identify whether you are holding spot ETH or a long or short derivatives position. Then choose a stop trigger that limits an adverse move and a take-profit target that closes the trade at a planned gain. Enter each order, or use a linked OCO/bracket or attached TP/SL feature when your exchange supports it.

A trigger only activates an order; it does not guarantee that you will be filled at that price. A stop-market order generally prioritizes execution but can slip, while a stop-limit order controls the worst acceptable price but can remain unfilled. Check the trigger reference, position size, reduce-only setting, fees, and liquidation rules before submitting.

What stop-loss and take-profit orders do

A stop-loss is a conditional exit intended to close a position when Ethereum moves against your plan. A take-profit is a conditional exit intended to close it when price reaches a favorable target. Neither order predicts where ETH will trade, and neither guarantees a result.

The trigger is an activation condition. After the trigger is reached, the exchange submits the associated market or limit order. Fast markets, gaps, thin liquidity, and the exchange’s trigger reference can produce a fill different from the trigger. Coinbase states that market-based exits may execute at a different price from the trigger price, while limit orders execute only at the limit price or better and may remain unfilled.

For leveraged products, TP/SL does not guarantee a maximum loss or protect against liquidation. A position can be liquidated before an intended stop executes if the margin level reaches the product’s liquidation threshold.

Decide which position you are protecting

Direction determines both the order side and where the prices belong. Confirm the product and position mode before entering numbers.

Position Protective stop Profit target Typical closing side
Long spot ETH Below the current or entry price Above the current or entry price Sell ETH
Long futures or perpetual Above? No—below the long entry or reference price Above the long entry or reference price Sell or close-long; usually reduce-only
Short margin, futures, or perpetual Above the entry or reference price Below the entry or reference price Buy to close; usually reduce-only

The first two rows are both long positions, so the stop is below and the target above. A short reverses the direction: a protective buy stop sits above the market and a buy target sits below it. Contract interfaces can label these actions differently, so verify whether the platform is asking for an opening order or a closing order.

Plan the levels before opening the trade

Choose the stop and target as part of the trade plan rather than after a price spike. The available documentation does not establish a universally correct ETH price, percentage, or risk-reward ratio, so do not treat an illustrative level as a forecast.

Write down the reference price

Record the entry price you intend to use and the price source relevant to your product. A chart may display last-traded price while the conditional order uses mark price, index price, or another reference. Your level must make sense against the reference that actually triggers the order.

Define the invalidation point

The stop should represent the price at which your trade thesis is no longer valid, not simply a number chosen because it is a round figure. Leave room for ordinary market movement only if that is consistent with your plan; moving the stop farther away after entry increases the planned loss.

Define the target

Set the take-profit where you intend to exit for a gain. If you want to close only part of the position, specify the quantity for each target and ensure the remaining position still has a protective stop.

Calculate the planned exposure

For a simple long, the price distance to the stop is entry price − stop price. A rough position-size calculation is maximum planned dollar loss ÷ price distance, before fees and slippage. For a short, use stop price − entry price. This arithmetic is a planning tool, not a promise that the realized loss will equal the result.

Choose how each exit will execute

Exit type What happens after the trigger Main advantage Main risk or limitation
Stop-market The exchange submits a market order Usually the best chance of exiting during a fast move Fill price can be worse than the trigger because of slippage and liquidity
Stop-limit The exchange submits a limit order Sets a minimum acceptable sell price or maximum acceptable buy price The market can move past the limit, leaving the position partly or entirely open
Limit take-profit Executes at the limit price or better when available Price control and no adverse fill beyond the limit It may remain open if buyers or sellers do not reach the order
Market take-profit Submits a market order when triggered Prioritizes closing over exact price Can fill away from the target in a volatile market

A stop-limit normally has two prices: the stop (trigger) and the limit (the order’s worst acceptable price). For a long position, a sell stop-limit commonly uses a limit below the stop so the order has some room to execute, but a wider gap also permits a worse exit. For a short, a buy stop-limit uses a limit above the stop. Exact validation rules differ by venue.

Check the trigger reference

Open the order ticket’s trigger or price-source selector and read it instead of assuming it follows the chart. Common choices include last price, mark price, and index price. Crypto.com documents mark-price-triggered conditional TP/SL, and Coinbase tells users to review the selected reference. If the chart shows last price but the order watches mark price, the trigger may occur earlier or later than the candle appears to show.

Also check whether the platform uses a separate trigger for the stop and target, whether a conditional order is evaluated continuously or only when the market is open, and whether price bands or contract limits can reject an order. These details are product-specific.

Platform-neutral steps for setting both exits

  1. Select the exact market. Confirm the ETH pair and whether it is spot, margin, perpetual, or futures. Order types, trigger choices, leverage, and closing rules vary by product and region.
  2. Confirm direction and quantity. Identify whether the position is long or short and how much ETH or how many contracts you are closing. On derivatives, check the position mode and whether the quantity is based on ETH, contracts, or quote currency.
  3. Enter the planned stop. Choose a stop-market or stop-limit order. Enter the trigger reference, trigger price, order quantity, and—if required—the limit price. For a long, the protective sell trigger is normally below the market; for a short, the protective buy trigger is normally above it.
  4. Enter the planned target. Select the take-profit order type, trigger reference, target price, and quantity. For a long, the target is normally above the market; for a short, it is normally below.
  5. Enable closing controls. On derivatives, use reduce-only when the interface offers it and when the order is intended only to reduce an existing position. A reduce-only order should not increase or reverse the position, but exchanges can adjust, cancel, or reject it as the remaining position and other open orders change.
  6. Link the exits if supported. Choose the platform’s OCO, bracket, or attached TP/SL function rather than entering unrelated orders when you want one exit to cancel the other. Read the preview: some features attach exits only after an entry fills, while others submit both orders immediately.
  7. Review constraints. Check tick size, decimal precision, minimum quantity, available balance or position size, fees, estimated margin, and the order preview. A price that looks valid on the chart can be rejected if it violates the product’s increment or distance rules.
  8. Submit and verify. After confirmation, open the orders or positions panel. Confirm that the stop and target show the intended side, quantity, trigger source, and status. Do not rely solely on a toast message or a chart marker.
  9. Recheck after a fill. If the entry filled partially, confirm whether the attached exits cover only the filled amount or the full requested amount. Add or resize protection if necessary.

How OCO and bracket exits behave

OCO means “one cancels the other.” Two linked exit orders are created so that execution or triggering of one cancels the other. A bracket order similarly groups an entry with a protective stop and a profit target. An attached TP/SL may activate only as the entry fills.

Linkage is not identical across exchanges. The platform may cancel the unused leg when the first order fills, when it triggers, or only after a resulting order is accepted. Partial fills can leave a reduced position with an order quantity that no longer matches it. Read the product’s order-status explanation and inspect open orders after every partial fill.

Binance’s documented sell-side OCO example places the take-profit limit above the current market and the stop-loss trigger below it, with the market between those prices. That arrangement describes Binance’s implementation; it is not a universal validation rule for every exchange or product.

Spot ETH versus derivatives

Spot

For a straightforward long spot holding, both exits generally sell ETH. A take-profit sell limit sits above the market, while a protective stop sell sits below it. If the stop is a market order, the exchange sells the available quantity after the trigger. If it is a stop-limit, the limit may not fill during a sharp decline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spot trading does not normally have liquidation from borrowed margin, but a margin or leveraged spot product can. Confirm whether your account is using borrowed funds before treating it as ordinary spot.

Perpetuals and futures

Derivatives use contract rules that can differ from a spot order ticket. Confirm whether the trigger watches mark, last, or index price; whether the exit is reduce-only; whether the contract is inverse or linear; and whether the quantity is in contracts or ETH. A long closes with a sell and a short with a buy, but the labels may say “close long,” “close short,” or “position TP/SL.”

Liquidation is a separate engine event. A stop may be rejected, unable to fill, or too late if the account reaches its liquidation threshold first. Do not assume that placing TP/SL removes leverage risk.

Illustrative examples

The following numbers explain order direction only; they are not an ETH forecast or a recommended trade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long spot example

Assume a trader buys 1 ETH at an illustrative entry of $2,000. The plan places a protective stop trigger at $1,900 and a take-profit target at $2,250. The stop is a sell order below the entry; the target is a sell order above it. With a stop-market, a rapid decline could produce a fill below $1,900. With a stop-limit, the trader would add a limit price, but the order could remain open if ETH falls through that limit.

Short derivatives example

Assume a trader shorts an illustrative 1 ETH contract at $2,000. A protective buy stop might trigger at $2,100, while a buy take-profit might trigger at $1,750. Both orders buy to close the short, but their trigger directions are opposite: the loss protection is above the market and the profit target below it. The trader must verify contract size, reduce-only behavior, trigger source, and liquidation price in the specific derivatives interface.

Managing partial fills, edits, and cancellations

When you reduce or close a position manually, the exchange may leave the original TP/SL quantity open. An oversized protective order can be rejected, reduced, or—on some products—risk opening a reverse position if it is not reduce-only. After every partial fill:

  • Compare the remaining position with the quantity on each exit.
  • Cancel leftover orders that protect a position no longer held.
  • Resize or replace the stop before placing a new target.
  • Check whether an OCO relationship survived an edit or partial execution.
  • Confirm the final status in the open-orders and positions panels.

Do not move a stop merely because price is approaching it unless that change is part of your preplanned rules. Editing can also reset time priority or create a short period with no protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common failure modes and fixes

“The order was rejected.”

Check minimum quantity, tick size, price bands, available balance, margin, and whether the trigger and limit prices are on the permitted side of the market. A derivatives order can also fail because the position was closed or the reduce-only quantity exceeds the remaining position.

“The stop triggered but did not fill.”

This is most commonly a stop-limit problem: the market moved beyond the limit. Review the order’s trigger and limit prices and decide whether execution priority or price control matters more for this trade. A stop-market can still experience slippage, but it does not wait for a limit price.

“The chart crossed my level, but nothing happened.”

The order may use mark or index price rather than last price, or the candle may show a transient trade that did not meet the selected trigger condition. Check the order’s reference-price setting and status history.

“One exit filled and the other is still open.”

The orders may not be linked, or the venue may cancel the other leg only after a particular execution event. Cancel the remaining order if the position is closed, then confirm that no residual quantity remains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“My target closed more than intended.”

Review quantity units, contract multiplier, position mode, and whether the order was reduce-only. A quantity entered as contracts is not necessarily the same as a quantity entered in ETH.

Fees, liquidity, and price protection

Fees reduce the realized result and can affect the amount available for a spot sell or the margin available for a derivative. Market exits consume available liquidity and can incur spread and slippage. Limit exits provide price control but can remain unfilled. Consider the order book, not just the displayed last price, when deciding whether a target or stop-limit is realistically executable.

Conditional orders can also be canceled by expiration rules, maintenance, risk controls, or a change in the underlying position. Keep sufficient balance or margin according to the exchange’s rules and monitor notifications rather than assuming an order remains active indefinitely.

Pre-submission checklist

  • Correct ETH market and product: spot, margin, perpetual, or futures.
  • Correct position direction: long or short.
  • Correct closing side: sell for a long, buy for a short.
  • Stop and target are on the intended sides of the market.
  • Trigger reference is understood: last, mark, index, or another source.
  • Stop-market versus stop-limit trade-off is deliberate.
  • Target and stop quantities match the position.
  • Reduce-only is enabled where appropriate for derivatives.
  • OCO, bracket, or attached-order linkage is confirmed.
  • Precision, minimum size, fees, liquidity, margin, and liquidation rules have been checked.
  • Orders are visible in the open-orders or positions panel after submission.

What to verify in your exchange’s help page

Use the documentation for the exact exchange, product, and jurisdiction before trading. Look specifically for the platform’s definitions of trigger price, mark price, stop-market, stop-limit, OCO, bracket, reduce-only, partial fills, and liquidation. Interface labels and regional availability can change, so a button sequence from one venue should not be treated as universal.
