To change the card Google Wallet uses by default for in-store contactless payments on an Android phone, open Google Wallet, select the card, then tap Details → Make default for tap to pay. This setting is different from your phone’s default payment app: one chooses the card, while the other chooses which wallet handles NFC payments.
Change the default card for contactless payments
- Open the Google Wallet app on your Android phone.
- Swipe across the cards at the top to find the card you want to use.
- Tap the card, then tap Details.
- Tap Make default for tap to pay.
Google says the first payment method added to Google Wallet becomes the initial default for contactless payments. To check which card is currently selected, swipe through your payment methods, tap Edit card order, and look for the card marked with the contactless symbol. Google Wallet Help: Change your default payment method in the Google Wallet app.
Use a different card for just one purchase
You do not have to change the saved default for a one-time payment. Open Google Wallet, swipe to the card you want to use, and then tap the payment terminal with your phone. Google documents this option for using a non-default card. Google Wallet Help.
Set Google Wallet as the phone’s default payment app
If tapping to pay opens another wallet, change the phone’s NFC payment-app setting. This does not select the card to charge; it selects the app that handles contactless payments.

Requirements for the default card to work
Selecting a card as the default does not by itself complete contactless setup. Google’s phone tap-to-pay guidance requires an NFC-capable phone with NFC turned on, Google Wallet selected as the default NFC payment app, and a supported payment method that is ready for use. The phone must also meet Google’s screen-lock and security requirements. Google Wallet Help: Make contactless payments with your phone.

Fix common problems
- The card is not ready: Check Google Wallet for a message above the card and complete any requested setup or verification. If Wallet says the card is suspended, Google directs users to contact the bank. Google Wallet Help: Make contactless payments with your phone.
- NFC is off or the phone does not support it: Contactless payments require NFC to be available and turned on. Look for NFC in Settings; if the phone lacks NFC support, the contactless phone workflow cannot work. Google Wallet Help.
- The wrong card is being charged: Check Edit card order for the contactless symbol, or manually select a card in Wallet before a one-time purchase. Google Wallet Help.
- The bank declined setup: Card and issuer support are required. Contact the card issuer if setup is declined; a physical card’s contactless capability alone does not establish that it is supported in Google Wallet. Google Wallet Help: Fix problems with a card.
- You want a store or private-label credit card as the default: Google says this type of card must be the only card added to Wallet to be the default. Removing other cards may affect their availability, so check before making that change. Google Wallet Help.
Phone, smartwatch, and Google Account settings are different
On a Wear OS smartwatch, the steps depend on the operating-system version: Google documents Make default for tap to pay for Wear OS 3.0 and More → Set as default card for Wear OS 2.0. These are watch-specific menus, not the phone workflow. Google Wallet Help: Make contactless payments with your smartwatch.
The Google Wallet website manages payment methods associated with your Google Account; it is not the documented control for choosing the phone’s contactless default. A payment method added on the website may still need to be added to the app for use on a device. Changes or removals can affect account and device availability differently.
