A moving-average crossover alert is different: it checks whether one average line crosses another, so you need an indicator condition or script—not just a price threshold. Here’s how to configure that alert in TradingView, with the chart feed, timeframe, crossover direction, and notification behavior specified.
What a moving-average crossover alert detects
A crossover occurs when a faster moving average crosses a slower moving average. An upward crossover means the faster line moves from below to above the slower line; a downward crossover means it moves from above to below. This is not the same as BTC’s price crossing one moving average.
TradingView’s official help documentation says, “Alerts can be created on data series, indicators, chart patterns, strategies, and drawing tools.” For an alert that compares two averages, select an indicator condition that makes that comparison or use a script that explicitly compares both average series. A basic BTC price alert alone cannot do it.
The alert reports that the configured condition occurred; it does not place an order. A crossover should not be treated as a prediction or a guarantee of a profitable result. TradingView recommends reviewing historical behavior and backtesting technical-alert rules, but that recommendation does not establish that a particular Bitcoin crossover rule works.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Choose the Bitcoin chart and timeframe
- Open the BTC market chart you intend to monitor. Choose the specific symbol and venue, such as a BTC/USD pair from a particular exchange. Different feeds can produce different prices and candles, which can affect when a condition is met.
- Set the chart interval before configuring the averages. Moving-average lengths are counted in bars of that interval: a 20-period average on a one-hour chart uses 20 hourly bars, not 20 days. It represents 20 days only on a daily chart.
Record the symbol, feed, and interval you selected. An alert based on one exchange’s BTC/USD candles may not match a chart using another venue or a different interval.
Set the two moving averages
- Add or configure two moving averages on the chart.
- Choose the averaging method for each, such as simple moving average (SMA) or exponential moving average (EMA).
- Set one length as the faster average and the other as the slower average. Select lengths that match your own method; no single pair is established as best for Bitcoin.
For example, a reader asking about a “50-day and 200-day” crossover would need a daily chart and averages set to 50 and 200 bars, respectively. On an intraday chart, those same lengths would represent intraday bars instead. The averaging method and BTC data feed also affect the lines and crossover timing.

Create the crossover alert in TradingView
TradingView documents two ways to start an indicator alert: right-click the indicator and choose Add alert, or open the Alert manager and choose the indicator as the condition. For a custom Pine Script indicator, the script can define alert conditions, but you still need to create the alert in the alert dialog. See TradingView’s Pine Script alerts FAQ and TradingView’s alert setup guide.
- Open the alert dialog using either route.
- Choose a condition that compares the faster average with the slower average. TradingView’s crossing operators distinguish a crossing in either direction from Crossing Up and Crossing Down. Select the direction you want. If you want notifications for both directions, create conditions for both, or use a script with separate upward and downward conditions.
- Check that the condition is comparing the two averages—not BTC’s price against one average.
- Choose when the alert should trigger. A condition allowed to fire while a bar is still forming may disappear before that bar closes. If you want to avoid acting on an intrabar cross that does not hold at the close, choose a bar-close trigger where available. TradingView documents trigger choices including Only Once, Every Time, Once Per Bar Close, and Once Per Minute; the available choices depend on the alert condition.
- Set an expiration, add a recognizable name and message, and select the delivery options you want.
- Create the alert, then check the Alert manager to confirm it is active and note its expiry.
For a custom Pine Script crossover, TradingView’s documented pattern for detecting the faster series crossing above the slower one is ta.crossover(fastMa, slowMa). The corresponding downward condition can be defined separately. The script must use the intended average types, lengths, and chart context.

Choose trigger and notification behavior
Trigger frequency controls how often the condition can notify you; it does not change what the averages calculate. Select a frequency that fits the condition and your tolerance for repeated notifications. A bar-close trigger waits for confirmation at the end of the chart interval’s bar, while an in-progress-bar trigger can notify earlier but may capture a crossover that does not persist to the close.
TradingView lists app notifications, browser toast notifications, email, webhook, sound, and plain text among its notification options. Choose the channels you will actually monitor. In TradingView’s current help documentation, a standard alert can last no more than two months; Premium and Ultimate plans have an open-ended alert option. Plan terms and interface details can change, so check the live alert setup guide when configuring an alert.

Keep the alert aligned with your chart settings
After creation, verify that the alert appears as active in the Alert manager and check its expiration. If it expires, it will no longer notify you unless you create or renew an alert.
TradingView says created indicator alerts retain their original settings snapshot. If you change the average lengths, type, or script after creating an alert, do not assume the existing alert has updated. Recreate it when needed so its condition matches the chart setup you intend to monitor. Review TradingView’s alert FAQ for details on indicator and script alerts.
