To sell vinyl records online, identify the exact pressing, grade the record and sleeve separately, check comparable sales, and choose a marketplace that fits your buyers and selling method. Before listing, account for platform fees and shipping; after a sale, wait for payment confirmation before dispatching the record.
1. Identify the exact pressing
A title alone is not enough to identify a record: the same album may have multiple releases and pressings. On Discogs, search the database and compare the entry with the copy you actually have, using details such as the label and catalog information printed on the record or sleeve. Discogs says a seller must match the copy to the database entry; if the release is not listed, it must be submitted to the database before it can be listed there. See Discogs’ selling guide.
Do not select an entry just because the album name and artist look right. A mismatch can lead to a buyer receiving a different edition than the listing promised.
2. Grade the record and sleeve honestly
Record condition and sleeve condition are separate. Select a grade for each, then use the listing comments to explain flaws or other details a buyer should know. Discogs’ grading guidance describes Near Mint as a stringent condition: the record should have no obvious wear and should play without imperfections. - Inspect the media and sleeve separately; a clean record can have a worn cover, or vice versa.
- Describe known visible or audible defects in comments instead of relying on the grade alone.
- Choose a grade that reflects the copy in hand, not the condition you hope a buyer will assume.
3. Set a price from comparable sales
Use recent sales for the same release and similar condition as a reference, not a promise of what your copy will sell for. Discogs’ suggested price uses the selected media grade and recent sales of the same item in similar condition. The exact pressing, sleeve grade, shipping charge, platform fees, and your preference for a quicker sale or a higher asking price all affect the amount to list.
There is no universal price or guaranteed time to sell established by these sources. Check comparable sales for the correct release rather than comparing only by album title, and calculate what you expect to keep after fees and postage before settling on an asking price.

4. Choose where to sell
Five options to consider are Discogs, eBay, Reverb LP, Facebook Marketplace, and local record shops. They offer different routes to buyers: collector-oriented listings, broader marketplace discovery, local pickup, or a direct shop sale. Online marketplaces can reach beyond your immediate area, but shipped orders add packing and fulfillment work. A local option can avoid mailing records, though it does not guarantee that a shop or nearby buyer will want them. Check account eligibility, payment rules, shipping options, and current terms before choosing a venue.

5. Estimate fees and net proceeds
Discogs says listing is free and charges a 9% fee on the item price and shipping after an order is placed. Treat that as a fee on the stated base, not as the amount you will keep: postage and any other applicable costs still affect proceeds. Details are in Discogs’ selling guide.
eBay’s official U.S. fee page says fees vary by category and circumstances. Its basic schedule and per-order fee should be checked against the seller’s actual category and account; the U.S. page is not a universal rate for sellers in other countries. Review eBay’s selling-fees page and use the current applicable fee schedule or calculator before setting a price.

For a Discogs order, wait until its status is Payment Received before shipping. Discogs also directs sellers to its record packaging guide and notes that international shipments may require additional procedures, including digital tax information for foreign customs authorities.
