Before setting prices, account for more than one fee: Etsy charges listing and transaction fees, while payment processing and some other costs depend on your country and sales activity.
What can you sell on Etsy?
Eligibility is a separate step from opening an account: a product that can be listed elsewhere does not automatically qualify for Etsy. Etsy’s Seller Policy, effective July 9, 2026, covers items a seller has made, designed, handpicked, or sourced, subject to category rules and prohibited-item restrictions. Read the current Creativity Standards and prohibited-item rules before buying stock or publishing a listing.
- Made by you: Handmade sellers must physically make or create the item.
- Designed by you: If a production partner helps make your original design, disclose that partner where Etsy requires it. Use your own listing photographs.
- Handpicked: Vintage goods must be at least 20 years old.
- Sourced: Sourced items are subject to Etsy’s detailed category rules; do not assume generic resale goods qualify.
Etsy’s help page summarizes the standard: “Everything listed for sale on Etsy must be made or designed by a seller, handpicked by a seller, or sourced by a seller.” See Etsy’s shop-opening guidance and Seller Policy for the full requirements.
How do I create a shop?
Complete initial setup in a desktop web browser. You can manage a shop in the Etsy Seller app afterward, but Etsy says the initial setup process must be done on desktop.

- Sign in or create an Etsy account. Start at Etsy.com/sell and choose the option to open a shop.
- Set shop preferences. Select your shop language, country, and currency. Choose a language you can use to communicate with buyers: Etsy says the initial shop language cannot later be changed, though you can add translations. Set the country to where you operate.
- Choose a shop name. Pick a name that meets Etsy’s current naming rules and suits the products you plan to offer.
- Set up payment and billing. Follow the prompts to enter the details Etsy requires to receive payments and charge fees. Availability and payment steps depend on seller location.
- Complete onboarding and publish. Etsy may charge a one-time, non-refundable setup fee; it displays the amount during onboarding. Review the fee and account details shown to you before completing setup.
Etsy does not require a business license as a condition of opening a shop, according to its help page. That does not exempt sellers from business registration, tax, consumer-protection, or other laws that apply where they operate. Check local requirements for your location rather than treating Etsy’s onboarding rules as legal advice.
How do Etsy fees work?
There is no single “Etsy cut.” Budget separately for charges that apply to listings, orders, payments, advertising, and fulfillment. The figures below reflect Etsy’s current US-dollar fee guidance accessed October 4, 2026; processing rates and some other fees vary by seller country.

| Fee | What Etsy charges | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | $0.20 USD per listing; the listing lasts four months or until it sells. | Renewal and other listing-related charges can affect your costs. Etsy’s fee guidance |
| Transaction | 6.5% of the total order amount, including shipping and gift wrap you charge. | Include these amounts when calculating your margin. Etsy’s transaction-fee explanation |
| Payment processing | A fixed amount plus a percentage; the rate varies by country. | Check the rate for your seller country before setting prices. Etsy Payments processing fees |
| Shop setup | A one-time, non-refundable fee may apply; Etsy shows the amount during setup. | It is not a universal amount quoted here. Etsy’s shop-opening guidance |
| Offsite Ads | For attributed sales, Etsy describes a 15% fee below $10,000 USD in shop revenue in a consecutive 365-day period, or 12% at or above that threshold; the fee is capped at $100 per order. | Sellers below the threshold may opt out; shops that reach it must participate. Verify current threshold rules and local policy. Etsy’s Offsite Ads guidance |
| Currency conversion | 2.5% when Etsy must convert between listing and payment-account currencies. | Using different currencies can add a cost. Etsy’s fee guidance |
| Other possible costs | Etsy Ads, shipping labels, regulatory operating fees in some countries, and applicable VAT or other seller taxes. | Ad costs vary; label charges depend on your selections and labels are available only in certain countries. Check the fee page for your country. Etsy’s fee guidance |
Calculate a product’s margin using its materials or purchase cost, labor, packaging, shipping you pay, and the applicable Etsy charges. Because processing and some additional fees are location-specific, do not rely on a generic fee estimate as a precise profit calculation. Confirm your country’s current rates and any taxes before publishing prices.
How should you prepare a listing and set prices?
A listing should make the product, its price, and the buyer’s expectations clear. For handmade items, use photographs you took yourself; disclose a production partner when required. Describe what the buyer receives, including relevant size, materials, variations, and processing or shipping details. Accurate presentation helps buyers make an informed decision and reduces avoidable confusion after an order.

- Check the item against Etsy’s current eligibility and prohibited-item rules.
- Photograph the actual product clearly and use your own images where Etsy requires them.
- Write a specific title and description that match the item rather than implying features it does not have.
- Include packaging, fulfillment, and applicable fees in your pricing calculation; do not treat shipping revenue as excluded from the transaction-fee base.
How should you promote a new Etsy shop?
Etsy Ads
Etsy Ads are paid placements within Etsy search results. Their cost varies, so decide whether the potential visibility is worth the spend for your product and margin; they are not a guaranteed route to sales.
Offsite Ads
Offsite Ads are Etsy’s placements on external sites, and the fee is charged only when Etsy attributes a sale to an ad. The rate and participation rules depend on the shop’s revenue threshold; consult Etsy’s current Offsite Ads guidance before deciding how it affects your pricing.

Etsy’s Seller Handbook describes Share & Save and Creator Collective as programs serving different goals for bringing shoppers to Etsy. Their terms, eligibility, and availability may vary; review the program details rather than assuming either is available or will generate income for your shop.

Plan fulfillment around the product and your location. Physical goods need preparation, packing, and shipping; digital goods have a different delivery workflow. Etsy shipping labels are available only in certain countries, and their cost depends on the seller’s selections. Check availability and rates for your country before building them into your process.

A thermal shipping-label printer is optional, not a requirement to open an Etsy shop. It may save time if you regularly ship physical orders and use printable labels; for a new shop with few shipments, a standard printer or another available label method may be sufficient. Choose tools only after you know your order volume and label workflow.
Quick Recap
What should a beginner check before publishing?
- Product eligibility: Your item fits Etsy’s current rules, and any required production-partner disclosures and original photographs are in place.
- Shop setup: You completed desktop onboarding, chose an accurate operating country, and understand the shop-language choice.
- Costs: Your price reflects listing, transaction, country-specific processing, and any other charges likely to apply.
- Fulfillment: You can deliver the item as described, and you checked whether Etsy labels are available where you operate.
- Legal obligations: You have checked the local rules relevant to running an online business; Etsy’s lack of a license requirement for onboarding does not determine those obligations.
