To sell koi fish responsibly, check your local rules first, make a clear and truthful listing for the fish, and agree on collection or compliant live-fish transport before accepting the sale. Local koi clubs, pond groups, specialist retailers, and experienced keepers are sensible places to look for buyers, but no single sales channel or price is right everywhere.
Where can I sell koi fish?
Start with people likely to understand koi care and pond requirements. Potential contacts include local koi clubs, pond-keeping groups, specialist aquatic retailers, pond-maintenance businesses, and experienced keepers. These are practical places to ask, not guaranteed marketplaces or endorsed sales channels.
You can also ask a specialist retailer or pond professional whether they know of responsible buyers or rehoming contacts. Clarify whether they are buying the fish, passing along a lead, or simply advising you; do not assume a referral or sale arrangement exists.
How do I make a useful koi listing?
Describe the individual fish accurately and use a current, recognizable photograph. Include its approximate size, what you know about its source, current condition, and known health history. If you are offering several fish together, identify the group clearly rather than implying that a photograph or description applies to each fish individually.

In England and Wales, government guidance specifies content requirements for advertisements by licensed animal sellers, including a recognizable photograph, country of residence, and country of origin. Requirements elsewhere—and requirements for sellers who are not licensed—may differ. Check the rules that apply to your circumstances before posting.
Check whether your sale requires a licence or other approval
Rules depend on where you live, what you are selling, and whether the activity counts as a business. Do not assume that a rule for hobbyists in one place applies to a regular seller, a shipment across a border, or a seller elsewhere.
England, Wales, and Scotland
UK government statutory guidance identifies factors such as repeated transactions, regular advertising, and high sales volumes as possible signs of a licensable commercial animal-selling business. It also describes limited circumstances in which small numbers of surplus hobby animals may be sold without a licence. Whether an exemption applies depends on the seller’s circumstances and the relevant local authority. Read the government statutory guidance on selling animals as pets and ask your local authority if your position is unclear.

- KOI POND NUTRITION: An ideal maintenance diet for your koi, ornamental goldfish and other outdoor fish species.
- DAILY DIET: Provides nutrition for energy, longevity and overall health.
- SOFT STICKS: Floating sticks are easy for fish to eat and digest.
- CLEAR WATER: Feeding a high-quality, highly digestible food creates less waste for clearer water.
- USAGE: Feed daily when water temperatures are above 50 degrees.
The same guidance says animals offered for sale must be in good health and generally says animals undergoing treatment must not be sold. Those standards apply in the legal context covered by that guidance; check the rules where you live if you are elsewhere.

Separate controls can apply to importing ornamental coldwater fish such as koi or moving them in specified contexts. Official guidance describes authorization, health certificates, pre-notification, and a biosecurity plan for the relevant import and movement cases. These requirements should not be treated as a universal checklist for an ordinary local sale. Check whether your particular route or transaction falls within the official live-fish import and movement guidance.
New Zealand
New Zealand has substantially different rules: the Department of Conservation identifies koi as pest fish and says approval is required to possess live koi. Its containment-area rules require live koi caught there to be killed; a commercial harvest licence permits specified sale of flesh, not a general live-koi sales channel. Do not advertise or transfer live koi without checking the rules that apply to your location and circumstances. See the Department of Conservation’s koi guidance.

Other locations
There is no single worldwide answer about permits or legality. Before listing or moving fish, check your local fish and wildlife, animal-sale, aquaculture, and live-animal transport rules. If you are unsure whether your activity is a private hobby sale or a regulated business, contact the responsible local authority.
Sell only fish that are fit for sale
Assess the fish’s condition honestly before listing it. The UK statutory guidance cited above requires animals for sale to be in good health and says animals undergoing treatment generally must not be sold within its scope. Elsewhere, requirements may differ, so check local standards rather than treating the UK rule as universal.

- 41% PROTEIN, PROFESSIONAL-GRADE NUTRITION — Platinum Pro is a high-protein koi and goldfish food made for the warm, active feeding season. The 41% protein supports steady, healthy growth, and one food covers both everyday nutrition and color support — so there's no need to buy a separate color-enhancing food.
- 3/16" FLOATING PELLETS THAT SOFTEN QUICKLY — The floating pellet stays on the surface so you can watch your fish feed and easily control portions. Pellets soften within seconds, making them easy for koi and goldfish to eat. Feed only what your fish finish in about 5 minutes to help keep your pond water clear.
- INCLUDES SPIRULINA & CANTHAXANTHIN — Platinum Pro contains Spirulina and Canthaxanthin, two ingredients commonly associated with supporting the natural color of koi and goldfish — built right into your everyday food.
- COMPLETE, BALANCED EVERYDAY DIET — A nutritionally complete koi and goldfish food that includes Primilac probiotic. Platinum Pro is best fed during the warm season when koi are active and feeding heavily; as water cools and your fish slow down, switch to Blue Ridge Cool Water Wheat, which is formulated specifically for cooler-water feeding.
- FROM AMERICA'S LARGEST & LONGEST-RUNNING KOI SUPPLIER — Blue Ridge Koi has been a trusted name in koi and goldfish since 1958, and Platinum Pro is the same food we feed the fish in our own facilities. Unlike other brands on the koi-food shelf, we actually supply koi every day.
Agree on collection or transport before you accept an offer
For a local sale, agree when and where the buyer will collect the fish and make sure the buyer is ready to receive it. For delivery, confirm in advance that the carrier accepts live fish, that the route is permitted, and that both the sender and recipient can meet the applicable conditions. Do not promise shipment until those details are settled.
Requirements can vary by route and certificate. For example, USDA instructions for a particular koi certificate require containers to be new or cleaned and disinfected, to prevent the escape of water or animals, and to keep separate shipments from exchanging animals or water. They also require a legible label with origin, destination, contents, and other shipment details. In that export context, the instructions further require specified introduced aquatic animals to be tested and found free from diseases of concern before introduction to premises, and shipments to contain only species listed on the permit. These are not universal rules for every local sale. Consult the applicable USDA koi certificate instructions if they govern your shipment, and confirm current requirements with the relevant authorities and carrier.
- Choose the handover method: confirm buyer collection or a specific carrier and route.
- Check the rules for that route: establish whether permits, health documents, notifications, or an authorized transporter are required.
- Confirm packaging and timing: follow the carrier’s current live-fish instructions and any route-specific certificate conditions; do not assume a shipping bag alone meets them.
- Coordinate both ends: make sure the buyer can receive and unpack the fish promptly and knows what to expect.
How should you set a price?
No reliable current price guide or market statistic is established here, so a generic figure would be misleading. Consider the particular fish and local market, and compare any offers on like-for-like terms: fish characteristics and documentation, buyer collection versus delivery, and who pays transport costs or bears the risks of shipping. Do not present an asking price as a market value without evidence.

Can I sell koi fish online?
An online listing may help you reach buyers, but whether you may advertise or sell online depends on local law and, in some places, whether your activity requires a licence. Choose a relevant local koi or pond community where possible, provide an accurate listing, and settle legal and transport details before taking payment or promising delivery. A platform’s ability to host a listing does not establish that the sale or shipment is lawful.
If you cannot find a buyer
Contact a koi club, aquatic specialist, pond professional, or responsible rehoming contact to ask about options. Do not release unwanted koi into a river, lake, or other natural waterway. OATA warns that aquatic pets should not be released into the wild because many are not native to the UK and need to remain in an aquarium or pond. Its fish-selling guidance discusses responsible handling and rehoming.
