Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe best way to sell an information product online is to validate a narrowly defined customer problem before building a large course. Start with a specific audience and measurable outcome, test whether people will pay, create the smallest useful product, choose a platform that matches the format, and improve the offer from real customer feedback.
Information products can generate low-cost digital revenue, but they are not automatically “passive income.” Marketing, customer support, refunds, updates, platform fees, taxes, and compliance still require ongoing work. The goal is to sell a useful outcome—not simply package a large amount of information.

What is an information product?
An information product is a paid digital product that helps someone learn, decide, create, or accomplish something. Common formats include:
| Format | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Ebook or guide | A clear body of knowledge or reference process | Quick to create, but often has a lower price ceiling unless it is highly specific. |
| Checklist or playbook | Repeatable workflows | Immediately practical, but narrower in scope. |
| Templates, spreadsheets, scripts, prompts, or swipe files | Tasks where buyers benefit from a starting asset | High practical value, but files may need compatibility and content updates. |
| Video tutorial | Software, physical processes, and demonstrations | Easier to follow for many learners, but requires hosting, captions, and revisions. |
| Self-paced course | A sequence of skills or a structured transformation | Can support a higher price, but completion and support are difficult. |
| Cohort course | Learning that requires deadlines, feedback, and community | Offers accountability and premium potential, but consumes the creator’s time. |
| Membership or paid community | Ongoing resources, support, or interaction | Creates recurring revenue potential while requiring retention work. |
| Paid newsletter or research briefing | Regular analysis or curated expertise | Builds a habit, but creates publishing pressure and churn risk. |
| Coaching or consulting package | Customized implementation | Highly valuable, but less scalable and usually better positioned as a premium offer. |
Platforms differ substantially. Gumroad supports downloads, courses, tutorials, ebooks, memberships, bundles, and services, while Thinkific and Teachable are more focused on structured learning and creator commerce.

Choose a problem people will pay to solve
Buyers rarely pay merely because information exists. They pay for organization, relevance, speed, confidence, implementation help, templates, feedback, accountability, or a result they believe they can achieve.
Evaluate a potential topic against five criteria:
- Pain: Does the problem cause lost money, wasted time, anxiety, risk, or repeated frustration?
- Frequency: Does the audience encounter it often enough to seek a solution?
- Specificity: Can you identify the audience, situation, and result precisely?
- Credibility: Do you have relevant experience, evidence, results, or a distinctive method?
- Purchasing context: Is there an existing budget, business expense, job function, tool, or urgent event connected to the problem?
Strong positioning is outcome-oriented, such as:
- Build a three-email welcome sequence for a local service business.
- Create a cash-flow dashboard for freelance designers.
- Prepare a first-time manager for difficult performance conversations.
- Launch a paid workshop using a repeatable promotion system.
Weak positioning is broad and informational: “Everything About Marketing,” “The Complete Guide to Productivity,” or “Learn Business.” These topics may attract attention, but they do not tell a buyer exactly what will change after purchase.
Also distinguish interest from buying intent. Likes, views, and survey answers show attention. Stronger evidence includes preorders, paid pilots, deposits, repeated problem-specific questions, qualified calls, or customers already paying for an inferior alternative.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Validate demand before creating the full product
Validation should progress from inexpensive evidence to paid evidence.
Start with low-cost research
- Review questions in relevant communities, support forums, product reviews, and search suggestions.
- Interview five to 15 people who fit the intended audience.
- Publish short content addressing the suspected problem.
- Offer a free checklist or diagnostic and observe opt-ins and replies.
- Ask what people have already tried, what failed, and what the problem cost them.
Move toward paid validation
- Sell a live workshop before recording a course.
- Offer a paid beta with a defined number of seats.
- Take preorders with a clear delivery date and refund policy.
- Sell a small template or diagnostic before building a larger bundle.
- Offer paid consultations to uncover recurring questions and the language customers use.
Do not ask only, “Would you buy this?” Ask what the person did the last time the problem occurred. Past behavior is more reliable than hypothetical enthusiasm.
Useful interview questions include:
- What is the exact problem?
- What have you tried?
- What did it cost in time, money, or missed opportunity?
- What would a successful result be worth?
- What would prevent you from buying a solution now?
- Which format would help you implement it?
- What support would you expect after purchase?
Define a realistic product promise
A useful promise identifies the audience, starting situation, desired result, mechanism, constraints, and exclusions. A practical formula is:
Help [specific audience] achieve [specific outcome] without [major obstacle], using [credible method], in [reasonable scope].

See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
For example: “Help freelance designers build a weekly cash-flow dashboard without advanced accounting software, using a reusable spreadsheet and a 30-minute setup process.”
Make the result concrete. Explain what the buyer will have, know, or be able to do; what files and lessons are included; what experience is required; how implementation works; and who should not buy.
Avoid guarantees that depend on factors outside the product. You can teach a sales process, but you cannot guarantee revenue because execution, pricing, traffic, competition, and market conditions vary. Be especially careful with claims involving income, employment, investing, health, legal outcomes, rankings, or business growth.

Choose the simplest format that delivers the outcome
- If the buyer needs a reference, create a guide or handbook.
- If the buyer needs to perform a repeatable task, use templates, checklists, scripts, or a playbook.
- If the buyer needs to watch a process, use video or screen recordings.
- If the buyer needs a sequence of skills, create a course.
- If the buyer needs feedback or accountability, offer coaching or a cohort.
- If the buyer needs ongoing updates or access, use a membership or newsletter.
Do not turn a 60-minute solution into a 10-hour course merely to make it appear more valuable. Extra modules can reduce completion, increase support requests, and disappoint buyers who wanted a focused result. A smaller template pack, workshop, or paid diagnostic may be a better first product than a large course.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Build a minimum sellable product
A minimum sellable product is not an unfinished product. It is the smallest complete version that can deliver the promised result.
Include:
- A clear promise and “who this is for” statement.
- A short orientation or “start here” section.
- The core framework or method.
- Concrete examples.
- Implementation steps.
- Reusable assets such as templates or checklists.
- A troubleshooting or common-mistakes section.
- A way to request support or report errors.
- Version and date information when the product depends on software, laws, platforms, or market conditions.
- Terms, refund rules, and usage or licensing limits.
For software-related products, label the relevant interface version or recording date. Menus, pricing, policies, and features change. State whether updates are included, how often you expect to revise the product, and what happens if a platform changes.
Before launch, buy your own product as a customer. Check the payment page, confirmation email, download or login link, mobile experience, file permissions, captions, and first recommended action.
Price for value, proof, and delivery burden
Do not price by page count or hours of video. Consider:
- The value of the problem being solved.
- The specificity of the result.
- Your credibility and available proof.
- Time saved and mistakes avoided.
- The amount of access or support included.
- Freshness and update requirements.
- Customer purchasing power and comparable alternatives.
- Platform, payment-processing, refund, and support costs.
A simple product ladder might look like this:
- Free: checklist, short guide, diagnostic, or sample.
- Entry product: focused template, playbook, or mini-course.
- Core product: complete course, toolkit, or structured system.
- Premium offer: cohort, coaching, audit, or consulting.
- Recurring offer: membership, community, or research subscription.
Possible pricing structures include a one-time purchase, payment plan, genuine beta price, bundle, order bump, post-purchase upsell, team license, or coaching add-on. Real scarcity can come from a cohort start date, limited coaching capacity, beta enrollment, or a documented introductory price. Fake countdowns and invented limits damage trust.
Some platforms restrict pricing options by product type. Teachable documents free, one-time, payment-plan, and subscription pricing where supported, and says subscriptions are not supported for digital-download products.
Where should you sell information products?
Choose a platform based on product type, launch speed, fixed and variable costs, tax model, delivery, branding, customer-data access, support burden, scalability, and migration risk. There is no universal best platform.
Gumroad: fast testing and simple digital products
Gumroad is a practical starting point for ebooks, templates, tutorials, memberships, bundles, and simple services. Its documented workflow is to open the Products dashboard, choose New product, select the product type, set the price, add the description and files, configure versions if necessary, test checkout, and publish.
As listed on its current pricing page, Gumroad charges no monthly platform fee, but direct or profile sales carry a 10% + $0.50 fee, while sales attributed to Discover carry 30%. Payment-processing treatment should be reviewed separately in the applicable terms. Gumroad also states that it acts as merchant of record for applicable sales-tax collection and remittance. See Gumroad’s pricing and fee documentation.

Gumroad is less suitable when you need a deeply branded learning environment, advanced assessments, enterprise administration, complex licensing, or very low percentage costs at high volume.
Teachable: courses, coaching, and creator selling tools
Teachable suits creators selling courses, coaching, downloads, bundles, and memberships with pricing plans, checkout links, coupons, upsells, affiliates, and student access.
Its current pricing information lists Starter at $39 per month when billed monthly or $29 per month when billed annually, with a 7.5% transaction fee. Higher plans have different fees and limits. Confirm current terms immediately before buying because plans and features can change.
Recommended Free Tools
To set pricing, open a product’s Pricing tab, select Add Pricing Plan, choose the supported pricing type, enter the price and plan name, configure billing or trial settings, copy the checkout URL, and test access.
Thinkific: a more developed learning business
Thinkific is designed for structured courses, communities, memberships, coaching, webinars, and digital downloads. Its pricing page currently lists Basic at $54 per month or $40 per month billed annually; Start at $109 or $82 annually; Grow at $219 or $164 annually; and Expand at $499 or $374 annually. Thinkific announced that the relevant 2026 prices apply to billing cycles on or after August 13, 2026. Review the current pricing page and pricing update before purchasing.
Thinkific is usually excessive for an unvalidated ebook or template that only needs file delivery.
Podia: an integrated creator business
Podia combines website and landing pages with email, courses, downloads, coaching, communities, and memberships. Its current annual-billing prices list Mover at $42 per month with a 5% transaction fee, Shaker at $84 per month with no platform transaction fee, and Earthquaker at $150 per month with no platform transaction fee. Payment-processor fees still apply. See Podia’s current plans.

Podia is a poor choice if you are still testing whether anyone will buy and do not need an integrated website and marketing system.
Shopify: an owned ecommerce storefront
Shopify is better suited to creators who want custom branding, a domain, apps, integrations, or a mixed physical-and-digital catalog. Shopify lets sellers mark an item as digital or non-shippable, but digital delivery requires an app. Its free Digital Downloads app can deliver uploaded files or links to supported services.
The documented workflow is to create or edit the product, disable shipping for the digital item, install and configure a digital-download app, upload the file or add a supported link, configure delivery email, test a purchase, and review tax settings. See Shopify’s digital-product guidance and Digital Downloads documentation.

Shopify offers control, but you may need to assemble apps for course access, delivery, email, analytics, and support. It is not automatically the simplest option for one download.
Self-hosted checkout or Stripe-based infrastructure
A custom stack using Stripe and separate hosting, access control, email, analytics, and tax tools can provide maximum control over branding, data, integrations, and licensing. It also makes you responsible for security, delivery, fraud, refunds, failed payments, compliance, and technical support. Stripe is payment infrastructure—not by itself a complete storefront or learning-management system.
Compare total operating cost, not headline price
Include monthly platform fees, payment processing, transaction charges, apps, email software, video hosting, affiliate payouts, refunds, chargebacks, tax administration, support time, and potential migration costs.
Illustrative example: a $50 direct sale on Gumroad at 10% plus $0.50 creates a $5.50 platform fee before other applicable processing charges. A platform costing $84 per month with no platform transaction fee would offset that fee at roughly 16 such sales per month—before processor fees and the value of the additional features. Use your own average order value and current plan terms.
Create a sales page that answers buyer questions
A sales page should sell the change the product enables, not just list its modules. Put the buyer’s questions in this order:

Prioritize distribution before buying a sophisticated platform. Potential channels include:
- Email list and personal website.
- Search-focused articles and demonstrations.
- Existing clients and professional networks.
- Relevant communities and newsletters.
- Partnerships, affiliates, and referrals.
- Webinars, live workshops, and private beta launches.
- Direct outreach to qualified prospects.
- Upsells to people who already buy your services.
Demonstrate the method through small, useful content: before-and-after examples, common mistakes, a calculator, a diagnostic, or one step from the larger process. Use case studies only with permission and specific context. Do not imply typical earnings or guaranteed financial results.

Use email before and after purchase
Before purchase
- Offer a relevant lead magnet.
- Send a welcome sequence.
- Teach part of the method.
- Address common objections.
- Announce the launch and explain the deadline or beta terms.
- Send a factual reminder without artificial scarcity.
After purchase
- Confirm what the customer bought and where to access it.
- Provide a clear “start here” step.
- Assign a quick-win exercise.
- Send progress reminders.
- Answer common support questions.
- Request feedback and, where appropriate, a testimonial.
- Offer a relevant next step or coaching add-on.
- For subscriptions, manage renewals and retention deliberately.
The first post-purchase message should eliminate uncertainty: what was purchased, where it is, what to do first, how to get help, and what result to pursue this week.
Handle taxes, refunds, licensing, and compliance
Tax treatment depends on your location, the buyer’s location, product type, platform, payment gateway, and whether the platform is merchant of record. Platform tax collection is not the same as income-tax advice.
For example, Shopify states that EU digital-goods VAT is generally based on the customer’s EU country, subject to applicable rules and settings. Gumroad says it became merchant of record for applicable sales-tax obligations beginning January 1, 2025, but also advises creators to consult a tax professional because creator-level obligations may remain. A US creator may still need to track revenue and expenses, keep records, address business registration, and meet income-tax obligations.

Perfect anti-piracy protection is not realistic; practical measures include access controls, watermarking where appropriate, clear license terms, version updates, and responsive customer support.

Make the product accessible and maintainable
Provide captions and transcripts for video, logical headings in documents, readable contrast, keyboard-friendly resources, and alternative formats where practical. Test spreadsheets, PDFs, links, and downloads on more than one device.

Common mistakes and recovery steps
- Creating before validating: Sell a live beta, small toolkit, or paid workshop first.
- Using broad positioning: Narrow the audience, context, and measurable result.
- Selling theory instead of implementation: Add examples, templates, exercises, and a first-week path.
- Underpricing high-touch support: Separate the self-paced product from paid feedback, office hours, audits, or coaching.
- Overbuilding technology: Start with a reliable checkout and delivery system.
- Relying entirely on marketplace discovery: Build email capture, publish useful content, and develop partnerships.
- Ignoring updates: Add dates, revision notes, and a clear update policy.
- Providing weak delivery: Test the purchase and send concise onboarding instructions.
- Assuming tax collection solves every tax issue: Confirm current terms and get qualified advice.
- Making unsupported guarantees: Describe the method and prerequisites rather than promising income or a specific result.
A practical 30-day launch plan
This is an example workflow, not a guaranteed timeline.
- Days 1–5: Identify the audience, recurring problem, alternatives, and desired result.
- Days 6–10: Interview prospects, publish problem-focused content, and define the offer and exclusions.
- Days 11–15: Presell, recruit a beta group, or sell a live workshop.
- Days 16–23: Create the minimum product, implementation assets, onboarding, support process, and update policy.
- Days 24–26: Build the checkout and sales page, configure delivery, write refund terms, and test the complete purchase.
- Days 27–30: Launch to the beta group or list, support buyers, record objections, and revise the product and sales page.
Final decision framework
Use the simplest suitable platform for your current stage:
- Testing an ebook, template, or playbook: Gumroad.
- Selling a first course or coaching product with minimal technical work: Teachable.
- Building a larger learning business with communities and memberships: Thinkific.
- Wanting an integrated creator website and email environment: Podia.
- Wanting an owned ecommerce brand or mixed catalog: Shopify.
- Building a custom, high-control operation: Stripe plus separate content, access, email, analytics, and compliance tools.
