The best place to sell furniture online depends on the piece and how you want the sale to work. Local marketplaces can suit bulky items that buyers can collect; broad marketplaces can expose a listing to more buyers; specialist sites are aimed at distinctive vintage and design pieces; and a standalone store makes more sense when you are building an ongoing business. Before listing, work out your likely net proceeds, prepare an accurate description and photos, and decide how the buyer will get the furniture.
This guide focuses on platforms and policies documented for US sellers. Fees, eligibility, shipping options, and service areas change, so check each platform’s current terms before committing.
Where can you sell furniture online?
Choose a channel based on the item, likely buyer, location, and fulfillment plan—not a universal ranking. These platforms serve different needs, and the best fit for a one-time local sale may not suit a dealer or a seller building a brand.

Choose by the kind of sale you want
- Bulky piece, local buyer: Start with a local marketplace or classified listing if pickup is practical.
- Distinctive vintage or design piece: Consider a specialist marketplace, while checking its eligibility rules and commission structure.
- Repeat selling: A standalone store may support a consistent brand, but you will need a plan to bring buyers to it.
- Unsure: Compare the likely buyer, sale format, fees, geographic coverage, shipping arrangements, and amount of coordination required.
How do you estimate what you will actually earn?
Do not treat the asking price as your proceeds. Start with a realistic expected sale price, then subtract the costs of making the sale and delivering the item. Include the work involved, too: coordinating messages, pickup, loading, packing, or a carrier can take time even when the platform’s cash fees look low.
- Platform listing, transaction, payment-processing, or commission charges
- Any subscription, application, or setup fee that applies to your account
- Packaging, delivery, freight, or insurance costs you agree to cover
- Discounts or other concessions you expect to make to close the sale
- Your time coordinating the transaction and preparing the furniture
Use comparable listings to inform a starting price, but remember that an asking price is not evidence that an item sold for that amount. Completed-sale data, where available, is more informative. Fee examples below are dated snapshots, not guaranteed current rates.

Chairish’s current help information says a new account defaults to Consignor and is automatically upgraded after reaching 10 live listings. It also describes a six-month grace period if Professional status falls below 10 listings. The public plan page lists these plan rates for vintage, antique, and pre-owned inventory, with newly made or custom items treated separately. Check the terms that apply to your account rather than assuming an older fee example still governs.
How should you prepare furniture for a listing?
A buyer needs enough information to judge whether the item fits their space, budget, and expectations. Be precise about what is included and show its condition rather than relying on broad claims such as “excellent” or “antique.”

Record the details buyers need
- Item type and quantity, including whether the price is for one piece or a set
- Exact dimensions, with units; for a set, identify whether measurements apply to each piece or the overall group
- Material, color, construction details, and any known brand or designer
- Condition, including scratches, stains, repairs, missing hardware, or other wear
- Known history or provenance only when you have a basis for the claim
- Pickup location and whether you offer delivery or shipping
A tape measure is a simple way to capture accurate dimensions. Chairish also asks for shipping dimensions; if a piece can be disassembled or compressed for shipment, those dimensions can improve shipping estimates. Do not claim an age, maker, or designer unless you can support it.
Photograph the furniture clearly
- Use clear, well-lit photos from several angles.
- Include labels and notable construction details when they help establish what the item is.
- Photograph wear and damage plainly, rather than leaving buyers to discover it at pickup.
- Show the pieces included in the sale so the scope of the listing is unambiguous.
How do you write a useful furniture listing?
Use a searchable title that names the type of furniture and, when known, its brand or style without overstating attribution. In the description, put the practical facts first: dimensions, materials, condition, included pieces, location, and the plan for pickup or delivery. State whether the price is for the whole set or one item.

For example, “Wood dining table, 72 × 36 in., used condition” is more informative than “Beautiful vintage table” if age and provenance are not established. Add specific wear or repair details and make sure the photos show them.

Set the fulfillment plan before you publish. A large wardrobe, sectional sofa, and small chair do not have the same practical shipping options. Decide who will arrange transport, who will pay, and whether the furniture needs disassembly or protective materials.

- Choose a realistic method: local pickup, local delivery, parcel shipping for an appropriate item, or managed freight.
- Check platform rules: confirm that your item and destination are eligible and that the platform supports the method you intend to use.
- Calculate the full cost: include packing and transport charges in your net-proceeds estimate, and clarify who pays them.
- State the arrangement in the listing: include the pickup area, delivery or shipping availability, and any relevant loading or disassembly details.
- Coordinate the handoff: agree on payment, timing, access, and who will load the item before the buyer arrives.
Chairish shipping rules are specific to Chairish
Chairish requires listings to qualify for either Chairish-managed or seller-managed shipping. A listing cannot offer local pickup or local delivery as its only fulfillment method, although either can be offered alongside shipping. For Chairish-managed shipping, its help documentation says the platform coordinates a shipper, insures the shipment, and pays the shipper; under the described options, the buyer is responsible for shipping costs. Confirm the live terms for the listing rather than applying this arrangement to other platforms.
For a bulky piece sold locally, moving blankets or stretch wrap may help protect it during a move, but sellers arranging pickup may not need shipping materials at all.
How can you make the transaction safer and easier?
Agree on the payment and handoff details in advance, use the platform’s current safety and payment guidance, and be cautious about unusual payment requests. For a local pickup, make sure the buyer knows the item’s location and loading requirements before arrival. Do not promise a typical time to sell: buyer interest depends on the piece, price, location, and demand.
How do you decide where to list a particular piece?
Work through the decision in this order: first identify the likely buyer; then check whether the platform reaches that buyer in your area; then confirm that its fees and fulfillment rules leave an acceptable net return. If a channel requires shipping eligibility, decide whether you can meet it before spending time on the listing.
- One bulky household item: prioritize a local audience and a workable pickup or delivery plan.
- Vintage, antique, or design-oriented furniture: compare specialist marketplace costs and eligibility with the value and distinctiveness of the piece.
- Several items or repeat inventory: weigh marketplace exposure against the operating work and customer acquisition required by an independent store.
- Low expected net return: reconsider the asking price, delivery plan, or amount of coordination you are willing to take on before listing.
Chairish describes its audience as “interior designers and tastemakers” seeking “extraordinary vintage, antique, and contemporary pieces.” That is the marketplace’s own description, not an independent endorsement or a guarantee of buyer interest.
