WeTransfer says it charges no platform commission, but Stripe processing fees still apply. The feature is best understood as a payment-gated delivery link—not a full online store.
How WeTransfer Paid Transfers work
The seller uploads files and sets a price. A buyer opens the shared transfer link, pays through Stripe, and can then download the files. WeTransfer says the files are delivered without compression or modification, and a buyer does not need a WeTransfer account to check out. See WeTransfer’s Paid Transfers overview.
- The seller uploads the files.
- The seller connects Stripe and sets a price.
- The seller shares the transfer link with a prospective buyer.
- The buyer completes checkout through Stripe.
- After payment is confirmed, the download unlocks.
This is useful when the file itself is the product and customers arrive through a link you share. It does not provide the product discovery or catalog experience of a marketplace or conventional storefront.
How to set up a paid transfer
Before you start
- Use a desktop browser to create the paid transfer; WeTransfer says sellers cannot set one up in its mobile app or mobile browser.
- Have a WeTransfer account and a Stripe account ready. Stripe is WeTransfer’s only supported payment provider.
- Confirm Stripe supports payouts for your country and that your account and bank details are in order.
- Check that the file fits the transfer-size limit of your WeTransfer plan and complies with WeTransfer’s content rules.

Create and share the transfer
- Sign in to WeTransfer on a desktop browser.
- Open Account Settings → Integrations → Connect Stripe, then sign in to Stripe or create an account and complete any required setup.
- Upload the files for sale and open the transfer’s three-dot options menu.
- Select Request Payment, enter the price, and generate the link.
- Share the link where your customers will find it, such as your portfolio, email, or social profile.
WeTransfer also says you can add or change a price after creating a transfer: open the Transfers panel, select the transfer, and change the price in its details. This lets you edit the price; it does not add coupon or voucher functionality.
Fees, prices, and payouts
WeTransfer says it takes no platform fee on Paid Transfers. That does not make a sale cost-free: Stripe’s payment-processing fees still apply, and the applicable amount depends on factors such as the seller’s location and payment method. Check Stripe’s pricing for the relevant account and transaction rather than assuming one universal rate.

- Documented price range: WeTransfer lists a minimum of $0.99 and a maximum of $999,999. These are its published dollar-denominated limits; its documentation does not establish identical numeric limits for every currency.
- Payout timing: WeTransfer’s FAQ says payouts typically arrive within 2–7 business days, varying by country. A buyer’s successful checkout does not mean the seller receives the money instantly.
- Transfer size: Paid transfers use the file-size limits of the seller’s WeTransfer plan, so check the current limit before advertising a very large download.
Taxes, currency conversion, refunds, and disputes can also affect what a seller ultimately keeps. WeTransfer’s payment documentation does not establish that it assumes the seller’s tax obligations or acts as merchant of record; review Stripe’s tools and the rules that apply to your business and customers.
What kinds of work can you sell?
Paid Transfers can suit creators who already have an audience or a buyer and need to deliver a finished file. WeTransfer promotes the feature for images, design files, documents, and data files.

WeTransfer says files are delivered without compression or modification, which can matter for large or quality-sensitive assets. That describes delivery, not protection: the service does not provide DRM or prevent a buyer from copying or redistributing a file after download.
What buyers should expect
A buyer can open the link and pay in a mobile browser, though the seller must create the paid transfer on desktop. Depending on location, Stripe checkout may offer major credit or debit cards, Apple Pay, or other supported methods; the options shown are not guaranteed to be identical for every buyer.

WeTransfer documents a 24-hour download window after purchase. After that, the buyer may need to authenticate again through the order-confirmation email. WeTransfer says it tries to recognize the same device and email used for the purchase; if it cannot, it sends a new download link by email. Tell customers to keep their confirmation email and provide a support contact for legitimate access problems.
WeTransfer says sellers can track downloads for paid transfers, including who downloaded documents and when. Check the controls available in your account, since interface details and availability can change.

Where the payment-link model falls short
- No built-in promotion tools: WeTransfer says discount codes and vouchers are not currently available.
- No full product store: Its documentation describes shareable paid transfers, not a browsable catalog or marketplace that brings in buyers.
- Limited commerce workflows: The feature is not presented as providing subscriptions, recurring billing, customer dashboards, license-key management, abandoned-cart recovery, or advanced order and email marketing tools.
- No assumed tax automation: Do not treat a Stripe checkout as proof that sales tax or VAT is fully collected and remitted for you. Establish your obligations and whether you need invoices.
- No post-download copy protection: Payment gates the initial download but does not enforce licensing or stop redistribution.
- Refunds are handled by the seller: WeTransfer directs buyers to contact the seller about refunds, so publish a policy and make a contact address available.
WeTransfer or Gumroad?
These services address different needs: WeTransfer adds payment to file delivery; Gumroad is positioned as a creator-commerce platform. Gumroad’s pricing page advertises a 10% flat fee and says it acts as merchant of record, handling sales-tax collection and remittance worldwide. Check its current terms and fees before choosing.

See Gumroad’s pricing and feature details. Choose WeTransfer when simplicity and direct delivery matter more than store features. Consider Gumroad when catalog presentation and its stated merchant-of-record service justify the advertised fee. A full ecommerce platform may fit better still if you need branded checkout, accounts, subscriptions, bundles, or integrated marketing and order management; those tools involve more setup than a single transfer link.
Checklist before sharing a paid link
- Confirm Stripe verification is complete and the payout bank account is correct.
- Check the file, price, and WeTransfer plan size limit before publishing the link.
- Make sure the product follows WeTransfer’s content rules and your delivery does not promise DRM or permanent account-based access.
- Set out your refund policy and give buyers a support email or other contact route.
- Tell buyers about the 24-hour download window and the confirmation-email authentication process.
- Run through checkout and download yourself so you can spot incorrect pricing or confusing instructions.
- Review tax, invoice, and record-keeping requirements for the places where you sell.
If Stripe connection or payout setup fails, resolve the issue in Stripe and WeTransfer account settings; WeTransfer does not list another payment provider as a workaround.
