To sell books online successfully, identify each book’s exact edition and condition, check current demand and competing offers, then choose a marketplace whose audience, eligibility rules, fees, shipping requirements, and workload fit your inventory. Amazon, AbeBooks, and eBay each serve different needs; none is established as the best choice for every seller, and a listed price does not guarantee a sale.
Start by sorting and identifying your books
Before choosing where to sell, separate your books into groups. A common used paperback, a current textbook, and a signed or collectible edition may attract different buyers and belong on different marketplaces.

- Record the title, author, ISBN if present, edition, and format.
- Note distinguishing details such as a signature, printing, dust jacket, or included materials.
- Separate textbooks, collectible or potentially rare books, and ordinary used copies.
- Set aside books with serious damage or other issues that may make online sale impractical.
Edition and format matter: two books with the same title may not be interchangeable listings. Use the marketplace’s current catalog details and listing rules to match the copy accurately.
Inspect condition and check whether buyers are looking
Describe the copy honestly
Inspect the cover, binding, pages, and any included materials. Look for writing or highlighting, missing or damaged pages, odors, loose binding, and a missing or damaged dust jacket. Amazon’s seller guide recommends evaluating condition and being transparent in descriptions; follow the current condition terms and rules of whichever site you use (Amazon’s guide to selling books; Amazon selling policies).
#1 Best Overall
Use clear photos when the marketplace allows or calls for them, especially to show defects or features that distinguish a collectible copy. Do not describe a book as being in better condition than it is.
Use current offers as evidence, not promises
Compare offers for the same edition and format, taking condition into account. Amazon advises resellers to check a book’s Best Seller ranking and condition before buying inventory to resell (Amazon’s book-selling guide). Where a marketplace provides sales or ranking indicators, they can add context, but a current asking price is not proof that a book sold at that price. Demand and competing offers can change.

Where can I sell used books? Compare the marketplace to your inventory
The best places to sell books online depend on what you have and how much selling work you want to take on. The official seller pages below establish platform features and fee information, not comparative sales speed, conversion rates, or net proceeds.
| Marketplace | Potential fit | Costs and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Its guide covers new, used, collectible, textbook, comic, and children’s books, as well as setup, listing, pricing, and fulfillment. | The US seller guide lists an Individual plan at $0.99 per item or a Professional plan at $39.99 per month, plus applicable fees. These are page terms that can change; confirm the current amount for your region and account before listing. The guide also reports average annual sales of $375,000 for independent sellers in Amazon’s US store in 2025. That is an overall seller figure—not bookseller-only, median, profit, or a forecast for a beginner. Source. |
| AbeBooks | The seller page describes a marketplace for rare, used, and new books aimed at professional booksellers with established businesses. | The page’s fee plans are dated February 18, 2026, and include different subscription, per-item, commission, and processing terms for Basic and Premium. Confirm the full current terms and your eligibility before relying on them. Sellers set shipping rates and speeds; the page says payouts are weekly by EFT. Source. |
| eBay | Worth comparing for individual listings and books, including special or collectible copies. | The reviewed US non-Store fee table lists 15.3% for Books & Magazines up to its stated threshold and 2.35% on the portion above that threshold. Store plans, listing allowances, account terms, and region affect fees; check the current schedule for your account. The fee page does not establish relative sales performance. Source. |
For a one-time clear-out, check whether a marketplace accepts casual sellers before spending time preparing listings; AbeBooks’ seller page is specifically aimed at established professional booksellers. For repeat selling, compare the audiences and terms against the actual types of books you can source and fulfill.

How do I sell textbooks online?
Start with the ISBN, edition, format, and condition. Textbook editions can differ in ways that matter to buyers, so match the listing to the copy in hand rather than relying on title alone. Check current competing offers for that exact edition and inspect the book for highlighting, writing, damaged pages, or missing components.
Then compare the likely sale price with all costs: marketplace fees, packing, postage, and the time needed to prepare and handle the order. A listing price is not a guaranteed sale price. If the margin is too small after those costs, consider another venue or keep the book out of your online inventory.

Set a price that accounts for the full cost of selling
Estimate what remains after the order is fulfilled, rather than pricing from a competitor’s asking price alone. Include:
- Marketplace and payment-related fees that apply to your account and listing.
- Postage, whether paid by you or charged to the buyer, and any shipping-rate assumptions.
- Packaging materials, such as a book mailer selected to suit the book’s dimensions and shipping method.
- Time spent identifying, photographing, listing, packing, and handling buyer questions or returns.
Amazon specifically advises sellers to include packing and shipping costs when pricing books (Amazon’s guide). Use the relevant marketplace’s current fee schedule or calculator where available; account type, store plan, category, and region can change the effective cost.

Make an accurate listing and fulfill it reliably
- Choose a venue and confirm eligibility. Check the current seller requirements, listing restrictions, and policies for your region and account. Amazon’s policy page is one place to check for Amazon listings: selling policies.
- Match the book precisely. Enter the correct title, author, ISBN, edition, and format. Do not attach your copy to a listing for a different version.
- Describe condition and distinguishing features. State material defects plainly and add useful photos where appropriate.
- Set a price from current evidence and your cost calculation. Compare relevant offers, then account for fees, packaging, shipping, and handling time.
- Choose a fulfillment method. Decide whether to ship orders yourself or use a platform fulfillment option if available to you. For self-fulfillment, use protective packaging suited to the book’s size and the shipping method, and include its cost in your calculation.
- Review performance by channel. Track sell-through, net proceeds, time spent, and customer issues. Adjust prices or marketplace choices based on your own results.
When selling online may not be worth the effort
Not every book will justify an individual online listing. If demand appears limited, competing offers are low, or fees and shipping leave little after costs, the time required may outweigh the expected return. The sources available do not establish local buyback prices or a universal alternative; compare the options available to you rather than assuming every book can be sold profitably online.
