To get the best price for an antique, first establish a defensible value range, then choose a selling route that can reach the right buyer without erasing your proceeds in fees, shipping, and time. There is no universally best site: eBay, Etsy, Ruby Lane, 1stDibs, Chairish, Facebook Marketplace, LiveAuctioneers, Invaluable, and Craigslist suit different objects and sellers.
Start with evidence, not an asking price
Record what you know about the object before choosing a price: its category, approximate age, maker or marks, materials, measurements, condition, repairs, provenance, and any labels or signatures. Photograph identifying details so you can compare the same features against other sales.
Look for completed sales and auction records for genuinely comparable objects. An unsold listing shows what a seller hoped to receive, not what a buyer paid. Compare maker, size, material, condition, rarity, and provenance; a vaguely similar object is weak evidence. A selling guide from The Finance Base identifies completed-sale research as a more useful pricing reference than asking prices alone.
For a potentially valuable or specialist piece, seek independent advice or more than one estimate from specialists or auction houses. Keep the purpose of each figure clear: a dealer’s offer, an auction estimate, an insurance valuation, and an achievable retail price are not interchangeable. No single reliable formula establishes an antique’s selling price; state the evidence behind your range and treat it as an estimate.

Choose a selling route that fits the object
Compare likely buyer fit, net proceeds, time to sale, seller workload, and how the object will reach its buyer. The sites below are options to investigate, not a ranking or guarantee of the highest price.
| Site or route | Potential fit | What to check before listing |
|---|---|---|
| eBay | Broad marketplace for collectibles and smaller antiques. | Fixed-price versus auction format, fees, competition, packing obligations, and how claims are handled. |
| Etsy | Vintage décor and visually distinctive objects. | Whether the item meets current eligibility rules, listing costs, search visibility, photography, and transaction charges. |
| Ruby Lane | Antiques and vintage inventory for buyers seeking specialist items. | Quality and authenticity expectations, shop costs, and the current fee schedule. Its official terms describe requirements for authentic, high-quality vintage or antique items; check the seller information and linked fee schedule for current details. |
| 1stDibs | Potential route for higher-end furniture, art, and décor. | Seller acceptance, plan and commission terms, and what evidence of quality or provenance is expected. |
| Chairish | Antique and vintage furniture and decorative objects. | Item fit, curation, commission, and available shipping support. |
| Facebook Marketplace | Local sales, especially bulky pieces or estate items. | Pickup arrangements, buyer screening, payment, negotiation, and whether shipping is available for your listing. |
| LiveAuctioneers | Auction route for collections and fine antiques through participating auction houses. | House participation, estimates, seller costs, reserve terms, and what happens if the lot does not sell. |
| Invaluable | Auction route for fine art and rare collectibles through auction houses. | Auction-house participation, fees, estimates, and fit for the specific object. |
| Craigslist | Local classifieds for bulky or lower-priced pieces. | Local demand, buyer screening, payment safety, pickup, and negotiation. |
These distinctions do not establish that a site will sell an item quickly or attract a better offer. Check each venue’s current seller requirements and terms before committing; costs and policies can change, and may vary by country, category, account, or plan.

Decide between a fixed price, auction, dealer, or private sale
- Fixed-price marketplace listing: A reasonable choice if comparable completed sales support your asking price and you can wait for a suitable buyer. Set a minimum acceptable net, not just a headline price.
- Auction: Consider it for an item whose value is uncertain or that may draw competing bidders. The outcome depends on timing and bidder interest; account for commissions, reserve terms, and the possibility of an unsold lot.
- Dealer: A dealer can offer expertise and a more direct route to a sale, but may offer less than expected retail to cover resale costs and risk.
- Private sale: Selling directly can avoid an intermediary’s commission, but you must find and qualify a buyer and arrange payment, insurance, and transport. Antiques dealer Simon Daniels describes the potential to retain the full price in a private sale, not a guaranteed higher net or an easier sale: “A private sale, negotiated directly between the seller and the buyer without an intermediary, offers the potential to retain the full price.”
Calculate what you will actually keep
Before setting a price or accepting an offer, subtract the costs that apply to your route. Depending on the venue and transaction, these may include listing and final-value charges, payment processing, subscriptions, promoted listings, packaging, shipping, insurance, and the cost of a return or dispute. A marketplace comparison published in 2026 discusses different seller costs and requirements for eBay, Etsy, Chairish, and 1stDibs, but figures may vary; use it as a prompt to check current platform terms, not as a fee quote. The Finance Base’s seller guidance also notes that charges can stack.
Write down your estimated sale price, each expected cost, and the minimum net you would accept. If an auction estimate or dealer offer looks attractive, compare the amount you are likely to keep—not unlike-for-like headline figures. Check the venue’s live fee schedule when listing because policies and charges can change. For Ruby Lane, use its official seller information and fee schedule rather than relying on an older quoted percentage.

Make the listing easy to verify
A remote buyer cannot handle or inspect the object. Use clear, well-lit photographs of the complete item and close-ups of marks, labels, signatures, construction, wear, damage, restoration, and missing parts. Include accurate measurements and show scale. Describe verified facts plainly; identify uncertain dates or attributions as estimates rather than certainties.
Share provenance details when known and retain supporting documentation. A photograph, visual search result, or seller’s attribution does not by itself prove authenticity. For a significant piece, consider an appropriate specialist opinion before making a strong attribution.

Plan shipping or pickup before you promise a price
Include fulfillment in your net calculation. Glass, ceramics, framed art, furniture, and metal objects need different protection, so there is no universal packing kit. Choose sturdy packaging, cushioning, and corner protection appropriate to the object; consider a specialist shipper for large, heavy, fragile, or irreplaceable pieces. For a valuable shipment, insurance and signature confirmation may be appropriate.
For bulky or fragile pieces, compare specialist shipping with local pickup and the logistics offered by the venue. If pickup is the practical choice, make the arrangement and payment method clear in advance. A lower shipping burden can improve net proceeds, but only if the route still reaches a credible buyer.
