Use WooCommerce for a physical item that needs shipping, inventory, taxes, or order management; Easy Digital Downloads for an ebook, software, template, course, music, or other downloadable product; and WP Simple Pay for a service, consultation, fee, donation, or simple one-time or recurring payment.
Choose the operational model first, then configure payment, delivery, policies, and a focused product page. Installing a plugin alone does not create a compliant store or a fulfillment process.

What you need before selling
Start with a self-hosted WordPress site, or a WordPress plan that permits the plugin you need. You will also need:
- A domain and reliable hosting.
- HTTPS/SSL enabled before accepting payments. HTTPS protects data in transit, but it does not automatically secure every part of a WordPress installation or guarantee compliance obligations.
- An approved payment account, such as Stripe, PayPal, WooPayments, or another gateway supported in your country and currency.
- The product name, benefits-led description, price, currency, images or previews, and delivery information.
- Refund, return, cancellation, and customer-support policies.
- A privacy policy, terms and conditions, and—when relevant—shipping and returns pages.
- Tax settings appropriate to your business location and customers. Plugin tax features do not guarantee legal compliance; obtain professional advice for complex or cross-border situations.
For a physical product, decide stock quantity, shipping destinations, rates, delivery estimates, and returns. For a digital product, confirm file format, compatibility, licensing, update policy, storage, and download limits. For a service, define scope, scheduling, delivery time, revisions, cancellation rules, and what happens immediately after payment.

Choose the right method

Rule of thumb: choose WooCommerce for fulfillment complexity, EDD for digital-delivery complexity, and WP Simple Pay for checkout simplicity. Gateway availability depends on country, business type, currency, account approval, plugin version, and enabled extensions.
Method 1: WooCommerce for a physical product
When WooCommerce fits
WooCommerce is the strongest choice when you must calculate shipping, reduce stock after a sale, manage orders, display taxes, or expect to add products later. Its core platform is free and open-source, with no monthly subscription; hosting, payment processing, maintenance, and extensions still cost money. WooCommerce estimates hosting commonly at about $25–$350 per month and extensions at about $29–$299 per year each, depending on requirements. Set it up
- In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin, search for WooCommerce, install and activate it, then complete the onboarding wizard.
- Confirm the store address, selling locations, currency, tax display, and measurement units. These settings affect shipping and tax calculations.
- Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Payments. Enable WooPayments, Stripe, PayPal, or another supported gateway, connect the merchant account, and complete any authentication or webhook setup requested by that extension.
- Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping. Create a shipping zone and add the appropriate flat-rate, free-shipping, local-pickup, or carrier-calculated method. Test the zone with a real destination address.
- Go to Products → Add New. Enter the name, full and short descriptions, product image, regular price, sale price if applicable, SKU, stock quantity, weight, and dimensions. Publish the product.
- Place a test order, confirm payment and email notifications, and check the order under WooCommerce → Orders. Verify that stock and fulfillment details are correct.
For one simple item, use one price, one SKU, one stock quantity, one shipping zone, and one gateway. Mark a product virtual when no shipping is required; enable downloadable only when WooCommerce will deliver a file. Sizes or colors require a variable product, and subscriptions or bookings usually require paid extensions. WooCommerce problems to check
- If checkout fails, verify HTTPS, gateway connection, webhook status, currency compatibility, email delivery, and caching exclusions.
- Exclude cart, checkout, account, and confirmation pages from caching and optimization.
- Do not assume default tax settings match your jurisdiction.
- For limited inventory, enable stock management and test the out-of-stock state.

Method 2: Easy Digital Downloads for one digital product
When EDD fits
Easy Digital Downloads is designed for ebooks, software, templates, music, photography, courses, PDFs, and other files. Its WordPress.org listing includes digital checkout, payment processing, customer management, reporting, secure file storage, and discount codes: Easy Digital Downloads on WordPress.org.
Set it up
- Go to Plugins → Add New Plugin, search for Easy Digital Downloads, install and activate the free version, or upload the Pro plugin from your EDD account.
- Run the setup wizard. Set the business location, currency, receipt emails, and store information. EDD’s current setup flow covers installation, the wizard, a first product, payments, store emails, and testing/go-live: EDD getting started.
- Configure payment gateways in EDD’s payment settings. Confirm that the gateway supports your country and currency.
- Go to Downloads → Add New. Add the title, benefits-led description, downloadable file, price, image, and any categories or tags. Add variable pricing, purchase limits, or licensing only when needed, then publish.
- Confirm the purchase receipt contains a working download link. Check expiration and download limits, and use secure file storage where available.
- Run a complete test in gateway test mode when available: successful payment, declined payment, refund, receipt email, download link, and customer-account flow.
EDD costs and edge cases
On August 18, 2026, EDD displayed introductory annual prices of $99.50 for Personal, $199.50 for Extended, $299.50 for Professional, and $499.50 for All Access. The page states that renewals occur at the full price; promotions and terms can change, so verify the current offer: EDD pricing.

- Expiring links and download limits reduce casual sharing but cannot prevent all copying.

- Configure reliable transactional email and test from an external address.

Method 3: WP Simple Pay for a focused payment page
When WP Simple Pay fits
WP Simple Pay is a Stripe payment plugin for one-time or recurring payments without WooCommerce. It suits a consultation, coaching session, event fee, donation, simple physical offer, or subscription when you do not need a full store. Its listing describes Stripe Checkout, payment forms, and recurring subscriptions: WP Simple Pay on WordPress.org.
A payment form does not automatically calculate shipping, maintain complete inventory, deliver files, schedule a service, or fulfill an order. You must provide those processes separately.
Set it up
- Install WP Simple Pay from Plugins → Add New Plugin.
- Follow the setup wizard to connect Stripe. Keep the account in test mode until the entire flow works.
- Create a form from a template or blank form. Add the offer name and description, amount, one-time or recurring interval, and only the customer fields you need.
- Enable cards and other payment methods that are actually available for your Stripe account and audience. Do not promise a wallet or local method solely because it appears in general marketing material.
- Set a success message or redirect page, receipts, and notifications. Include delivery, booking, or support instructions.
- Embed the form with the plugin’s block, shortcode, or insertion control. Use a dedicated payment page when your plan supports it.
- Test successful and failed payments, confirm the transaction in Stripe, verify emails, then switch to live mode.
WP Simple Pay costs and limitations
On August 18, 2026, WP Simple Pay displayed introductory annual prices of $49.50 for Personal, $99.50 for Plus, $199.50 for Professional, and $299.50 for Elite. The page states that these plans have no plugin transaction or monthly fees, but Stripe processing fees still apply. Features such as recurring payments, automatic taxes, purchase restrictions, advanced methods, and installment plans vary by plan: WP Simple Pay pricing.

Stripe’s standard US pricing page displayed 2.9% + $0.30 per successful domestic-card transaction. It also lists additional charges for some manually entered, international, currency-converted, and alternative payment transactions. Fees vary by country, method, account, and negotiated pricing: Stripe pricing.
- Recurring billing requires clear renewal, cancellation, interval, and failed-payment disclosures.
- Refunds and disputes are handled through Stripe and your stated policies.
- If WordPress does not reflect a successful payment, inspect Stripe webhook delivery, plugin logs, caching, and firewall settings.
- Collecting a shipping address is not the same as calculating rates, taxes, labels, and fulfillment.
Optional alternative: WPForms
WPForms can collect payment for a simple offer when you already use a form-builder workflow: WPForms. Treat it as an alternative, not a fourth full ecommerce system. It is less suitable when you need stock deductions, shipping zones, a product catalog, automated digital delivery, licensing, or detailed order management.

- Benefits, not only technical features.
- Price, currency, and exactly what is included.
- A prominent call to action with supported payment methods.
- Delivery timing, shipping cost, stock status, or download expectations.
- Refund, return, cancellation, and support information.
- Relevant testimonials, reviews, guarantees, or other legitimate trust signals.
- Frequently asked questions and a clear contact route.
- A mobile-friendly layout with minimal navigation and distractions.
- A confirmation page and post-purchase instructions.
For digital goods, show a preview and state file format, compatibility, update policy, and license terms. For services, explain scope, scheduling, delivery time, revisions, and cancellation rules. For physical products, disclose stock, delivery estimate, shipping, returns, and tax treatment.
Test before launch
Run the whole journey as a customer, not only as an administrator:
- Successful card payment and a declined payment.
- Correct currency, tax display, shipping calculation, and final total.
- Customer receipt and administrator notification from an external email address.
- Mobile checkout on a real phone or device.
- Order status, stock deduction, and fulfillment instructions.
- For downloads: working link, expiry, download limit, account access, and refund behavior.
- For subscriptions: renewal disclosure, cancellation path, and failed-payment handling.
- Confirmation page content and support contact details.
- Webhook delivery and logs, especially after switching from test to live mode.
If checkout does not load, verify HTTPS, temporarily test with a default theme and only the payment plugin active, inspect browser-console errors, and confirm the gateway is in the intended mode. If customers abandon the page, reduce unnecessary fields, show the complete price and delivery timing early, use a mobile-friendly design, and explain refunds and support.

Use WooCommerce when a physical product’s shipping, stock, tax, or order workflow matters. Use Easy Digital Downloads when secure file delivery, licensing, or digital reporting is central. Use WP Simple Pay when you want the fastest focused payment page for a service, fee, donation, or uncomplicated recurring offer. Build the page, delivery process, policies, emails, and test order around that choice.
