Secure setup depends on obtaining a genuine device, safeguarding its recovery words, and checking addresses and transaction details on the device screen before you approve or share them.
What a hardware wallet protects—and what it does not
A hardware wallet keeps the keys used to authorize Bitcoin transactions on a dedicated device rather than exposing them directly to a computer or phone. The companion app may prepare and display a transaction, but the device is where you should verify its details and approve it.
This reduces some risks from malware on an internet-connected device. It does not make Bitcoin immune to phishing, theft, physical coercion, malicious approvals, or mistakes with the wallet backup. Anyone with your recovery words may be able to access the associated funds; if you lose the words and the device becomes unavailable, you may be unable to recover the wallet. Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as “the best balance between very high security and ease of use,” but that is not a guarantee against loss or theft: Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance.
Set up a genuine device yourself
- Buy through a trusted channel. Prefer the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. Check the brand’s current seller guidance and authenticity procedure; these vary by manufacturer. For example, Trezor’s safety guidance identifies its shop, Amazon storefront, and authorized resellers as the most likely safe sources and warns against unauthorized third parties.
- Inspect and authenticate the device. Follow the manufacturer’s official procedure and look for signs of tampering. Do not rely on packaging alone.
- Initialize it yourself. Use the official setup process to create the PIN and wallet backup. Do not use a device that arrives with a preconfigured PIN or recovery phrase, and never accept recovery words supplied by a seller or another person.
Protect the recovery phrase and keep it recoverable
“Recovery phrase,” “seed phrase,” and “wallet backup” may refer to the words generated by the device, although terminology and backup formats differ by model. These words can restore access to the wallet, so treat them as secret credentials: anyone who obtains a usable copy may gain control of the funds.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Record the backup exactly as instructed
Write down the words in the order and format the device specifies. Check that the record is complete and legible using the manufacturer’s supported verification process. Do not assume every wallet uses the same word count or format. For example, Trezor documents BIP39 backups of 12 or 24 words and SLIP39 backups of 20 words for supported devices; see Trezor’s wallet backup guide.
Keep it offline and private
- Do not photograph or scan the phrase, or save it in email, cloud storage, a notes app, or another digital location.
- Never type it into a computer or phone or send it to anyone. Trezor’s instruction is: “Never enter your wallet backup anywhere unless prompted by your Trezor device.” Follow the recovery procedure for your specific model: Trezor’s wallet backup guide.
- Store the physical record to reduce the risk of theft, fire, water damage, and accidental loss. A compatible metal backup can improve physical durability, but it is not a security substitute: a readable copy still needs to be kept secret. Check that any backup product supports your wallet’s format.
- More than one secure physical location may reduce the risk that a single accident destroys the backup, as Bitcoin.org’s guidance notes. Additional copies also create more places an attacker might find, so make them only if you can protect every copy.
Use a passphrase only if you can recover it
A passphrase is not simply another PIN. On supported Trezor setups, it is combined with the wallet backup to derive a distinct wallet; the exact phrase produces the exact wallet. A forgotten or mistyped passphrase can make funds in that wallet inaccessible. Because it adds another secret that must be preserved exactly, use it only if you understand the model-specific behavior, have a clear recovery plan, and have tested the supported recovery procedure before moving significant funds. See Trezor’s passphrase guidance.

Verify the address and payment on the device
Before sharing a receiving address
- Request or generate the address in the wallet’s companion app.
- Check that the address shown in the app matches the address displayed on the hardware wallet itself.
- Share the address only after checking the device display. A compromised computer can substitute a different address. Trezor advises users to “always check the receiving address on your Trezor device screen”: Trezor’s security threat guidance.
Before approving an outgoing transaction
Read the destination and transaction details on the device screen, not just on the computer or phone, and approve only if they match what you intended. Ledger warns that an internet-connected display can be tampered with; approving without understanding the device’s displayed details is blind signing. See Ledger’s explanation of blind signing.
Keep recovery readiness current
Install wallet and companion-software updates through official procedures. Updates can provide security and stability fixes, but firmware updates can sometimes wipe a device. Make sure you can access the correct backup before updating, and follow the instructions for your model. Bitcoin.org discusses updates in its wallet security guidance; Trezor explains backup handling in its wallet backup guide.

Bitcoin.org recommends keeping only small everyday amounts on a computer or phone and storing the remainder in a safer environment. For larger or more complex holdings, multisignature can require multiple independent approvals, reducing reliance on a single device or location. It also makes setup and recovery more complicated, so it is an advanced option to configure and test carefully, not a universal upgrade. See Bitcoin.org’s guidance on wallet security.

When comparing devices, look beyond broad security claims. Check the exact model’s Bitcoin features and address types, what it displays for addresses and transactions, backup format and recovery process, authenticity checks, official update path, and how the PIN and recovery steps fit your circumstances. Address compatibility can matter: confirm that the exchange or person sending you Bitcoin supports the address format you plan to use. Bitcoin.org’s wallet listings discuss compatibility considerations. Manufacturer instructions apply to their own products and may change, so consult current documentation for the specific model and firmware you use.
