Before linking a bank account to Kraken, secure both your Kraken login and the email account used to recover it. Add a recovery method before locking account settings, then review the bank-linking requirements and any withdrawal hold for your specific funding method. The steps below cover Kraken’s documented U.S. ACH transfer through Plaid; other locations and funding options may work differently.
Secure your Kraken sign-in and recovery email
Use a unique password and turn on sign-in 2FA
Choose a password you do not use anywhere else. Kraken recommends at least 15 characters, although its stated minimum is 12, and suggests a password manager to generate and store it. Then enable sign-in two-factor authentication (2FA). Kraken calls passkeys its most important account security feature and says they are resistant to phishing because the credential is tied to the site or app identity. Add a second passkey if you can, so losing access to one device does not leave you without a sign-in option. A FIDO2-compatible security key is an optional physical way to keep a passkey on a separate device; a compatible device passkey may be sufficient, so buying hardware is not a requirement.
Protect the email account attached to Kraken
Secure that mailbox with a unique password and its own 2FA. Kraken warns that someone who takes over your email may try to use it to recover your account. Where possible, avoid relying on a phone number for sign-in or 2FA: a SIM swap or number takeover can expose text-based verification. Set up recovery before enabling Global Settings Lock
Add a Master Key first
Kraken’s Master Key can help prevent unwanted password resets and can serve as a backup for sign-in 2FA. Set it up before turning on Global Settings Lock (GSL): while GSL is active, Kraken says you cannot add or change a Master Key. Enable GSL to restrict sensitive changes
After the Master Key is ready, enable GSL to block changes to account settings and withdrawal addresses. Kraken’s 2026 security guidance describes a removal delay from 1 to 30 days, with three days as the default in that guidance. Choose a delay you can live with: the lock is intended to make unauthorized changes harder, but it can also slow legitimate changes if you need to remove it. Know what each 2FA setting protects
Kraken has separate 2FA functions for sign-in, funding, trading, and the Master Key. Turning on sign-in 2FA does not automatically enable the others. Funding 2FA can protect withdrawals, but Kraken says it does not stop someone from adding a new cryptocurrency withdrawal address. GSL is the setting Kraken identifies for blocking changes to withdrawal addresses. Kraken also cautions that Funding 2FA needs suitable additional protection—GSL or sign-in 2FA—to prevent someone with account access from changing or removing it. Check eligibility before linking a U.S. bank through Plaid
Kraken’s published ACH-via-Plaid instructions apply to a specific case: a verified Kraken account located in the United States, excluding Texas, and a U.S. bank supported by Plaid. The bank account must be under your control, and its account-holder name must match the name on your verified Kraken account. Do not link someone else’s bank account. If you are outside this U.S. ACH case, use the funding options displayed in your own Kraken account. Availability and requirements can vary by location, bank, verification status, and funding method; ACH-via-Plaid steps are not a universal bank-linking process.
Link through Plaid on Kraken web
- Sign in to Kraken and open Deposit.
- Select US Dollar, then choose Linked bank transfer.
- Click Add new account, select your financial institution, and follow Plaid’s prompts.
- Review the deposit terms and the confirmation page before submitting.
Link through Plaid in the Kraken app
- Choose Deposit, then USD.
- Select Linked bank transfer, then Link account with Plaid.
- Choose your financial institution and follow Plaid’s prompts.
- Check the terms and confirmation details before submitting.

Understand the ACH withdrawal hold before depositing
For ACH deposits through Plaid, Kraken says processing can take up to five minutes. Once credited, the funds are available for trading, but the deposited amount cannot be withdrawn for seven days. Kraken’s cash deposit options page, updated October 1, 2026, also lists a seven-day hold for ACH Plaid and separately describes a 72-hour hold for certain other transaction types.
