It cannot tell whether a transaction is safe or stop you from approving a malicious one. Protecting self-custodied crypto also means securing your recovery phrase, checking addresses and transaction details on the device, limiting contract permissions, and treating unexpected support requests or tokens with suspicion.
What a hardware wallet protects—and what it does not
A hardware wallet stores private keys offline from the computer or phone used to access wallet software, then signs transactions on the device. If that computer is compromised, keeping the keys off it can reduce the risk of direct key theft. But the computer can still display misleading details or connect to a malicious site, and the device will not determine whether the action you approve is wise. Ethereum.org’s security guidance and Ledger’s hardware-wallet explanation describe this distinction.

Think of the device as one part of a security routine—not a guarantee against phishing, unsafe approvals, or physical access to your backup. You remain responsible for confirming what the wallet is being asked to do.

Start with a device you set up yourself
Use a genuine device and follow its official setup process. Ledger advises generating the recovery phrase during setup rather than using a preconfigured device. Get wallet software and updates through official vendor channels; Trezor recommends checking websites and software updates and downloading Trezor Suite from its official website. Bookmark a verified site instead of following an unsolicited link. These are vendor recommendations, not independent audit findings. Ledger on recovery phrases; Trezor on secure use.

Keep the recovery phrase private and offline
The recovery phrase can restore access to the wallet. Anyone who obtains it may be able to move the funds, so never enter it into a website, send it in a message, or give it to someone claiming to be support. Write it down and store it securely; do not make digital copies or save it on a computer. Ethereum.org warns against computer storage, while Trezor advises against digital copies.
Storage involves a trade-off: an online copy can be exposed through malware or account compromise, while a physical backup can be found, stolen, or destroyed. Choose a plan suited to your circumstances rather than assuming one location is safest for everyone. Offline storage does not eliminate physical threats, as Ledger notes.
Check addresses before receiving or sending crypto
Before sharing a receiving address or sending funds, compare the complete intended address with the address shown on the hardware wallet’s screen. A compromised computer could display a substitute address; checking the device display helps catch a mismatch. Ethereum.org also advises verifying the recipient address exactly because Ethereum transactions are irreversible. Ethereum.org security guidance; Ledger on hardware wallets.

Do not approve based only on what appears in a browser or app. If the address on the device differs from the one you intended, stop rather than sending a test or proceeding in the hope that the discrepancy is harmless.
Review transaction details and limit spending permissions
Before signing a transaction, inspect the details displayed by the wallet and device. For a smart-contract request, check the asset, recipient or contract, action, and any spending permission shown. If the details are hidden, contradictory, or unclear, pause and look for reliable documentation before approving. A hardware wallet can sign an action without making that action safe.
Where a contract asks for permission to spend tokens, grant only the amount needed for the task when the wallet allows it. Ethereum.org warns that unlimited spending approval can let a contract drain funds. Ethereum.org security guidance.

Understand blind signing and Clear Signing
Stop when you cannot understand what you are approving
Blind signing means approving a transaction when the wallet cannot present its meaning in a readable, useful form. Ledger describes it as an advanced feature needed for some smart-contract transactions, such as token swaps through a decentralized exchange, and recommends disabling it after use. Ledger’s support page says updates can disable the feature automatically; that behavior should not be assumed for other device brands. Ledger support: blind signing.
If a request shows unreadable data or omits important details, do not treat the hardware wallet’s approval prompt as proof that the transaction is legitimate. Stop unless you can establish what the action does and intend to authorize it.
Clear Signing can make some supported details easier to read
On May 12, 2026, the Ethereum Foundation announced an open Clear Signing effort. Ledger’s developer documentation describes Clear Signing as using metadata associated with ERC-7730 to display supported transaction details in plain language on a signer’s secure screen. It depends on compatible wallet support and relevant metadata or integration, so it is not available for every transaction or chain. A clearer display helps you assess an action; it does not make the action safe by itself. Ethereum Foundation announcement; Ledger developer documentation.

Do not respond to unsolicited messages or calls asking for a wallet backup, PIN, password, or code. Trezor says such requests are scams and warns that scammers impersonate support through multiple channels. If you need help, navigate independently to the vendor’s official support channel rather than using a link or contact supplied in a message. Trezor secure-use guidance.

Unexpected airdrops or tokens can also be used to lure people into connecting a wallet and approving a transaction. Treat an unexpected asset as a reason to be cautious—not as an invitation to visit a claim site—and inspect any requested on-chain action before signing. Choose a device based on the way you will use it
Ethereum.org names Ledger and Trezor as examples of hardware-wallet providers, but the available evidence does not establish a best model or current comparison of prices, inventory, or asset compatibility. Before choosing a device, check its current documentation against your intended use:
- Confirm support for the assets, networks, and wallet software you plan to use.
- Check whether the device displays the recipient and transaction details you need to understand before approval.
- Review the recovery and backup workflow, including how you confirm that the backup was recorded correctly.
- Consider connection requirements, operating-system compatibility, physical usability, and how often you expect to use the wallet.
- Check the vendor’s support and update process, while treating vendor security statements as claims rather than independent verification.
Features and Clear Signing compatibility vary by device and integration. A purchase does not replace careful backup storage or transaction review. Ethereum.org security guidance; Ledger on hardware wallets; Ledger developer documentation.
