To spend less on a long-distance move from Dallas, reduce what you ship, then compare written estimates built from the same inventory and services. Verify the mover’s Texas or federal credentials, understand how the estimate can change, and compare damage protection before signing. There is no reliable “typical Dallas” total without a destination, move date, household inventory, and access details.
First, identify which moving rules apply
“Long-distance” may mean a move within Texas or a move across state lines. Federal interstate protections generally apply when household goods cross a state line with a mover involved; a move wholly within Texas is subject to Texas requirements. For interstate moves, verify the mover through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). For Texas moves, check that the mover has an active TxDMV certificate.
For a Texas move, TxDMV says movers must give you a written proposal and moving-services contract before loading. The proposal describes the services and maximum amount that may be due; it may be binding or not-to-exceed. For an interstate move, FMCSA requires a written estimate covering transportation, accessorial, and advance charges, based on an actual or virtual inspection. TxDMV’s household-goods moving guidance and FMCSA’s estimate guidance explain the respective rules.
Reduce the shipment before getting final prices
Inventory what you intend to take before inviting movers to estimate the job. Sell, donate, recycle, or discard items that are not worth transporting. A smaller shipment can also mean fewer boxes and less packing material, but the amount saved depends on the move; there is no sound universal percentage to apply.

Give each company the same complete inventory and the same service requirements. Include packing, storage, stairs or elevators, long carries, and unusual building or truck access. If a mover prices a smaller inventory or omits an access condition, its quote is not a fair comparison with a more complete estimate.
Compare written estimates on the same scope
Get written estimates from several movers. FMCSA cautions that a mover’s “rate quote” is not an estimate. Ask each company what is included, which charges could be added, and what circumstances could change the price. Put agreed services and access details in the paperwork rather than relying on a phone conversation.

For interstate moves, distinguish binding from nonbinding estimates. A binding estimate sets the amount due at delivery under its terms, but adding items or services can require a revised estimate. A nonbinding estimate is not a guaranteed final price: under the federal rule, the mover generally may not require more than 110% of that estimate at delivery. That is not an absolute cap on all eventual charges; additional amounts may be payable under the applicable rules. FMCSA explains estimate types and the 110% rule.
Texas proposals may be binding or not-to-exceed. Read the proposal and contract to understand the maximum amount and services stated, and ask when payment is due and which payment methods the mover accepts. Do not sign blank forms.

Check the mover, not just the advertised price
For a Texas move, use TxDMV’s Truck Stop and consumer guidance to check for an active certificate. For an interstate move, use FMCSA’s mover search to check federal registration and complaint history. Confirm the specific business that will handle the move, not only a brand name in an advertisement.
Ask whether the company quoting your move is the carrier or a broker, and identify who will actually transport your belongings. Check the company’s contact information and read the proposal, contract, payment schedule, and accepted payment types. TxDMV and the Federal Trade Commission flag warning signs such as unusually low offers, generic contact details, unmarked trucks, missing documents, and demands for large deposits. FTC advises customers to get written estimates from several movers and ask what damage coverage costs and pays. See the FTC’s moving advice.

Compare protection as part of the total cost
Mover liability and transit insurance are not interchangeable. Ask what the mover’s liability covers, what options cost extra, and what a separate transit insurance policy would cover. Review exclusions, limits, and claim procedures before you choose. A low per-pound liability limit can leave a valuable item compensated for far less than its replacement cost; TxDMV illustrates this issue in its moving guidance.
Keep the written estimate, contract, inventory, payment records, and any insurance documents. TxDMV says Texas customers should submit a written loss, damage, or charge claim to the mover within 90 days of delivery. Its guidance describes mediation and filing windows that depend on the mover’s response or nonresponse; consult current TxDMV instructions if you need to pursue a dispute.

Choose a service model by its all-in cost and workload
A full-service mover, rented truck, or container can each make sense depending on your destination, shipment, schedule, and willingness to do the work. No option is automatically cheapest. Compare the same practical factors before deciding:
- All-in cost: include fuel, mileage, labor, packing, storage, supplies, cleaning, and access-related charges where applicable.
- Your workload: account for packing, loading, driving, unloading, and any labor you must arrange.
- Timing and flexibility: compare delivery windows and how much control you have over pickup and delivery dates.
- Protection: compare liability and insurance terms, not only the transport price.
- Price-change risk: check whether the inventory and access details in each quote match the actual move.
U-Haul’s moving-budget guide lists truck or container rental, fuel and mileage, labor, storage, boxes and supplies, and cleaning as possible budget categories. It is a checklist from a vendor, not a neutral price comparison or a Dallas route-cost study.
Budget for packing supplies after decluttering
Count what you still need only after deciding what is moving. Check local free or reused-box options, estimate tape and other packing materials, and then compare individual purchases with bulk buying or a kit. Buying more supplies than the move requires is not a saving.
U-Haul reports that most people spend $100–$500 on boxes and packing supplies, but says the amount varies with home size and decluttering. This is a vendor-published estimate, not an independent benchmark for Dallas households; use your own inventory to budget. U-Haul also says bulk purchases can save money if unused items can be returned. Check the return terms before relying on that option. U-Haul’s guide provides its details.
