How to Safely Hold Bitcoin as a Long-Term Investment

Long-term Bitcoin custody comes down to a workable choice between managing your own keys and relying on a custodian. Compare the risks, recovery demands, and security steps before moving substantial funds.

For long-term Bitcoin storage, choose a custody plan you can reliably recover and maintain. Self-custody gives you direct control of the keys but makes you responsible for protecting them and their backups; a custodian takes over key management but adds dependence on that provider. Neither choice removes Bitcoin’s investment risk: secure storage cannot prevent price losses or make Bitcoin suitable for every investor.

What does Bitcoin custody protect?

A Bitcoin wallet manages the private keys that authorize transactions; it does not contain the bitcoin itself. The bitcoin is recorded on the Bitcoin network, and access depends on having the keys—or a working recovery route for them. If those are lost or compromised, you may lose access permanently.

Custody risk is the risk of losing access through theft, loss, a compromised key, or a provider failure. Investment risk is the possibility that Bitcoin’s value falls, perhaps substantially. Good custody can reduce some ways of losing access; it cannot reduce market risk or guarantee a return.

Bitcoin.org’s FAQ notes that protocol security does not prevent user error or weaknesses in wallet software. Its Security section calls user error Bitcoin’s most common vulnerability. The practical implication is to choose a setup you understand, rather than assuming that a device or provider makes mistakes impossible.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

How do the main custody options compare?

These options overlap: self-custody describes who controls the keys, while hot, cold, and hardware wallets describe how keys are accessed or stored. A hardware wallet is commonly used for self-custody, but self-custody does not require one.

Option Who controls the keys? Online exposure and physical risk Recovery, convenience, and upkeep
Hot wallet You, if it is self-custodial; otherwise, the provider. Check how the wallet is designed. Internet connectivity makes it convenient but exposes it to cyberthreats. Any device or backup may also be lost, damaged, or stolen. Useful for frequent transactions. You must understand its recovery method and protect the device and credentials.
Cold storage, including hardware signing You, in a self-custodial setup. Keeping keys offline generally reduces exposure to online attacks; offline devices and backups can still be lost, damaged, or stolen. Better suited to infrequent access than a hot wallet. Requires a recovery plan and enough familiarity to sign transactions when needed.
Third-party custody The custodian manages access to the private keys. You depend on the provider’s security practices and access controls. This does not eliminate the possibility of provider failure. Can avoid the need to manage keys yourself, but adds provider rules, fees, and failure procedures to understand.
Multisignature A configured threshold of signers must authorize a transaction. Can distribute signing authority, but setup errors or unavailable signers can create serious access problems. Requires durable wallet configuration, coordination, and a recovery plan. It is a more complex setup to maintain.

Bitcoin.org describes cold storage as a safer choice for long-term storage against online attacks, while the SEC’s investor bulletin also warns that cold devices may be lost, damaged, or stolen. The Bitcoin Developer Guide describes hardware wallets as signing-only devices: a connected wallet prepares a transaction, the hardware device signs it after review, and the connected wallet broadcasts it. The guide says this approach can improve security over full-service wallets with less hassle than an offline computer, but it still requires purchasing and using a device to transact. These are general descriptions, not assessments of any particular brand, model, or current product.

How should you choose between self-custody and a custodian?

Self-custody suits people prepared to manage recovery

With self-custody, you control the keys and take responsibility for their protection and recovery. That avoids depending on a custodian’s solvency or procedures, but it also means there may be no provider able to restore access if your keys and recovery method are lost. The SEC’s December 12, 2025 Investor Bulletin puts it plainly: “Self-Custody also means that you have sole responsibility for the security of your crypto assets’ private keys.” The bulletin is general staff guidance, not a rule or regulation.

Choose this route only if you can keep the signing device and recovery information secure, follow the wallet’s instructions, and ensure that you—or someone you have planned for—can carry out recovery when needed.

Third-party custody suits people who prefer provider-managed keys

A custodian or exchange manages access to the keys, so you depend on that provider to safeguard assets and make them available under its terms. Before entrusting it with Bitcoin, use the SEC’s December 12, 2025 investor guidance to investigate:

  • How the provider safeguards assets and who can access them.
  • What happens if the provider fails, and how customers may access or recover assets.
  • Whether any insurance applies, what it covers, and what it excludes.
  • Fees and the provider’s terms, including whether customer assets may be lent or commingled.
  • The provider’s regulation and jurisdiction, as well as its security practices.

Do not infer that a provider is regulated, solvent, insured, or keeps assets segregated merely because it calls itself a custodian. Those details depend on the specific provider and its current terms.

How do you protect a recovery phrase and backup?

A recovery phrase—also called a seed phrase—is a sequence of words that can restore a wallet if its device or software is lost or damaged. Anyone who obtains the phrase may be able to access the associated Bitcoin. A backup gives you another path to recovery, but it also creates another target for theft.

  1. Generate and record recovery information privately. Follow the wallet’s authentic setup instructions, and keep the phrase offline and physically protected.
  2. Keep the backup separate from the signing device where appropriate. Consider the risks in your situation: a backup stored beside the device may be easier to find with it, while a backup kept elsewhere must remain accessible to you or your intended successor.
  3. Do not save the phrase as a photo or in a cloud service. Bitcoin.org warns against both. Never enter it into a website, message, or support form because someone asks.
  4. Plan a recovery check before adding substantial funds. Use a separate, low-value test wallet and its backup to learn the documented recovery process. Do not reveal the recovery phrase for a funded wallet as part of a test.
  5. Write down the recovery steps as well as preserving the secret. Keep practical instructions private and protected, so you or an intended successor can use them without making the phrase easy for an attacker to find.

No legitimate person, business, or support team should ask you to disclose your recovery phrase. Treat such a request as a warning, even if the message appears to come from a wallet provider or claims your funds are locked.

How can you reduce mistakes when sending Bitcoin?

Bitcoin transactions are irreversible, so verify the destination and transaction before approving it. For a hardware wallet, review the receiving address and transaction details on the signing device’s own display, following the device’s instructions. The device is part of the process, not a substitute for checking what it is being asked to sign.

  • Obtain wallet software and devices through sources the manufacturer identifies as authentic, and follow current setup documentation.
  • Before approving, check the address and transaction details using the wallet’s available verification steps.
  • Be wary of guaranteed-return offers. Bitcoin.org identifies them as scams.
  • If you use a custodian or exchange, protect the associated account with a strong password and multifactor authentication where available.

When does multisignature make sense?

Multisignature (multisig) requires a configured threshold of signers to authorize transactions. Distributing signing authority may be useful for a holder with a clear reason to do so, but it creates extra setup and recovery demands. It is not automatically safer for someone who cannot confidently maintain the arrangement.

BIP 129 identifies setup risks such as incorrect or tampered signer membership, script type, derivation paths, signature threshold, and failure to preserve a shared configuration. It describes a common setup process intended to address some initial risks. The specification is opt-in and not backwards compatible; all participating signers must support the relevant approach for a compliant setup.

Before relying on multisig, make sure you understand how to reconstruct the wallet policy and coordinate signers if a device, participant, vendor, or software application becomes unavailable. The cited materials do not establish an optimal threshold or assess commercial multisig services.

How should you plan for incapacity or death?

A secure setup also needs a continuity plan. Keep a written record explaining where recovery materials are held and how an intended successor can access them, without placing the secret itself where an attacker could easily find it. Consider who should know that the plan exists and how they can reach it if you are unavailable. The sources cited here do not prescribe an estate plan, so legal and tax arrangements depend on your circumstances and jurisdiction.
