To donate safely after Hurricane Helene, first choose the community or need you want to support, then find a recipient through an official state emergency-management page or the organization’s own verified website. Give money by credit card or check, not through an unsolicited link or request for gift cards, wire transfers, or mobile-payment apps. Helene affected communities across multiple states, so there is no single destination that necessarily serves every place you may want to help.
Where can I donate to Hurricane Helene victims?
Start with geography: decide whether you want to support western North Carolina broadly, a particular North Carolina relief organization, or a Georgia county. The state resources below offer starting points, not a guarantee that every listed campaign is still accepting donations. Confirm the current recipient and payment destination on its official site before sending money.

These routes are not a ranking of effectiveness. Compare the area served, whether the recipient is an established relief organization, how clearly it explains the use of funds, and whether you reached its payment page through an independently verified channel. Current fund availability and county-level unmet needs are not established by these referral pages.
Why cash is usually more useful than unsolicited goods
Cash lets relief organizations adjust as needs change and buy or direct support where it is most useful. In its October 2, 2024 guidance, NC VOAD President Kristy Kulberg said cash donations give voluntary agencies and faith-based organizations the flexibility to address urgently developing needs. Unrequested items and independent deliveries can create sorting, transport, storage, and distribution work that competes with response operations.

If you are organizing a goods drive, first locate a current official request for specific items and a coordinated collection point. Do not assume that a collection site or needs list from 2024 is still active. If you want to volunteer or travel to an affected area, coordinate with an established relief organization or local officials instead of self-deploying. Road hazards cited in the 2024 North Carolina announcement described conditions at that time, not current travel conditions.
How to donate safely after Hurricane Helene
- Choose the place or need. Decide which community or type of support you intend to help before picking a recipient.
- Find the organization through a trusted route. Start from a state emergency-management page or navigate directly to a known charity’s official website. Do not rely on a social post, text, email, or search-ad link as proof that a fundraiser is genuine.
- Verify the charity and payment destination separately. Check trusted charity reports and the relevant state charity regulator. Use contact details you find independently to confirm that the organization is soliciting donations and that the payment page belongs to it. A familiar name or logo can be copied.
- Use a safer payment method. The FBI says credit cards are safer and warns against gift cards and wire transfers; the Department of Justice also advises donors to use credit cards or checks and avoid cash, wire transfers, and mobile-payment apps. Keep the receipt and confirmation.
- Ignore urgency and unsolicited requests for information. Do not click unknown links or share personal or financial information in response to an unexpected contact. Caller ID can be spoofed. Navigate manually to the agency or charity’s known official website.
- Do not pay to apply for government disaster assistance. The FBI says there is no application fee for government disaster assistance and officials do not ask for financial information. The FTC’s Helene alert search-result text also warns that a request for money to qualify for FEMA funds is a scam; verify assistance information through FEMA’s official channels.
- Keep a record and act if something looks wrong. Save the confirmation. If you suspect fraud, contact the named charity using independently located details and report the incident through the channels below.
The FBI notes that scammers may approach people door-to-door or contact them by phone, text, or email. Government workers should carry official identification and show it on request; a caller claiming to represent an agency is not verified by caller ID alone. Common disaster-relief scams to watch for
- Impersonated charities: Fraudsters may use a well-known charity’s name or disaster branding. Verify the organization and donation address independently.
- Fake government or insurance contacts: Do not pay an unexpected caller or provide sensitive information just because they claim to be an official. Verify through an agency’s official contact channel.
- High-pressure repair offers: Be wary of contractors demanding upfront payment for quick repairs or pressuring you to decide immediately. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia also flags price-gouging concerns after disasters.
- Social-media and message solicitations: A post, text, or email is not proof of legitimacy, even if it uses real photos or a recognizable name. Go to the organization’s official site yourself.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia advises donors to verify well-known charities, reject unsolicited donation requests, use cards or checks, and resist high-pressure repair decisions. Its October 2, 2024 advisory said the National Center for Disaster Fraud had received more than 200,000 disaster-fraud complaints over its history at that time; that cumulative figure is not a count of Helene-related complaints.

- North Carolina: North Carolina DPS points to the state Attorney General’s consumer-protection route in its donation guidance. Use the current contact information on the North Carolina Department of Justice consumer-protection page.
When reporting, keep messages, receipts, payment records, website addresses, and the name or contact details used by the solicitor. Do not send additional money to someone who promises to recover a donation or unlock assistance.
