How to Revoke a Company’s ACH Authorization and Stop Future Account Debits

Send the company written notice revoking recurring ACH permission, then tell your bank or credit union and request a timely stop payment for the next scheduled debit.

To stop a company’s recurring ACH withdrawals, revoke its permission in writing, then notify your bank or credit union and ask it to block future debits. If the next payment is already scheduled, also request a stop-payment order at least three business days before the debit date. Keep copies of both notices and check your account afterward.

1. Revoke the authorization with the company

Send the company a clear message stating that you withdraw authorization for future recurring debits from your bank account. Email or a letter creates a record; keep a copy and note when and how you sent it. The CFPB advises contacting the company and following up in writing. You can use wording such as:

I revoke authorization for [company name] to make future recurring ACH debits from my account ending in [last four digits]. Please stop submitting these debits and confirm that the authorization has been canceled.

Use the company’s official contact channel if it specifies one, but do not rely only on a phone conversation when you can preserve written proof.

2. Tell your bank or credit union

Contact the institution that holds the account and identify the company, the recurring debit, and the fact that you have revoked authorization. Ask how it records that the authorization is no longer valid and what it needs from you to block future payments. It may ask for written confirmation or documentation that you notified the company.

Under Regulation E, once the institution has been notified that authorization is no longer valid, it must block future payments for that particular debit from the designated payee-originator; it cannot simply wait for the company to stop sending them. See the CFPB’s Regulation E § 1005.10 and its official interpretation. The institution may confirm that you told the company, including by requiring written confirmation within 14 days after oral notification. If it requires that confirmation and you do not provide it, it may honor later debits.

3. Request a stop-payment order before the next debit

Revoking authorization and requesting a stop payment are related but distinct steps. Revocation withdraws permission; a stop-payment order tells the bank or credit union to prevent a particular scheduled preauthorized transfer. If a debit is coming up, give the institution an oral or written stop-payment order at least three business days before its scheduled date. Regulation E’s timing rule applies to preauthorized transfers—transfers authorized in advance to recur at substantially regular intervals—not necessarily to every one-time payment. Check the rule’s coverage and definitions in Regulation E § 1005.2.

The institution may charge a stop-payment fee. Ask about its accepted channels, any fee, and the cutoff it uses for processing your request; bank procedures can vary.

If you make the request by phone

An oral stop-payment order can be effective if you give it at least three business days before the scheduled debit. The institution may require written confirmation within 14 days. If it does, it must tell you about the requirement and provide the address for sending confirmation when you make the oral request. Write down the date, time, representative’s name, and any confirmation instructions.

If the debit is fewer than three business days away

Contact the institution immediately and ask what it can do for the upcoming debit as well as future ones. The three-business-day rule is the minimum advance notice for a stop-payment order; do not assume a request made later will prevent the next scheduled withdrawal. Still submit the revocation and ask the institution to block future debits.

5. Deal separately with the bill or contract

Stopping the ACH payment method does not erase a loan balance, cancel a subscription, or end another agreement. If you still owe money, arrange another way to pay or resolve the contract directly with the company. For payday-loan debits, the CFPB also advises notifying both the lender and the bank or credit union; see its guidance on stopping a payday lender’s electronic withdrawal.

What this process covers

This guidance is for a U.S. consumer seeking to stop recurring account withdrawals, including ACH debits. Regulation E’s requirements depend on the account and transaction, so do not assume the same rules apply to every commercial account or payment method. For the CFPB’s model disclosures and forms, see Appendix A to Regulation E.
