The form number and action requested matter. A show-cause notice may call for a reply—GST Portal materials identify Form GST DRC-06 as the reply to a show-cause notice—while an order may require an appeal or another remedy. A DRC-01D recovery intimation follows a different process and does not have a reply option, according to the GST Portal’s 2024 functionality note.
There is no single online response route or deadline for every communication described as a “GST assessment notice.” Read the full document, check the legal provision and date, then use the portal function that matches the stage of your case. If an order has already been issued, check appeal options promptly rather than treating it as an unanswered notice.

First identify the document and the stage of the case
“GST assessment notice” is not one single document with one response form or deadline. Before filing anything, read the notice and its attachments to establish what the tax authority has issued and what it asks you to do. The GST Portal’s forms catalogue describes DRC-01 as a summary of a show-cause notice, DRC-06 as the taxpayer’s reply to a show-cause notice, and DRC-07 as a summary of an order.
Use the notice itself—not just a message or summary—to check the issuing authority, legal section or rule, tax period, issue date, stated response date, amount in dispute, and requested action. Save a copy of the complete notice and every attachment available through the portal. If a document’s form number or legal basis is unclear, do not assume that DRC-06 is the right response merely because the communication concerns assessment.

What to check before choosing a response
Make a short case record before drafting. Capture the GSTIN associated with the account, notice or order number, issuing authority, cited section or rule, relevant tax period, date of issue, date by which action is requested, and any amount identified. Note whether the document asks you to explain or contest an allegation, pay an amount, or respond to an already-issued decision. These details help distinguish a summary from the underlying notice and an open notice proceeding from a post-order remedy.
Check that you have the full document, not only a portal alert or summary. A DRC-01 summary is associated with a show-cause notice, while DRC-07 is an order summary. The underlying notice or order and its attachments contain the context you need to understand the allegation, calculation, provision and requested next step. If something appears missing, look for additional notices or documents in the case area before deciding that the summary is all that was issued.

A reply and an appeal are not interchangeable: the reply addresses a show-cause notice before an order, while an appeal is a route to consider after an appealable order has been issued. A recovery intimation such as DRC-01D has its own instructions and should not be treated as either of those steps.
How to prepare and submit a reply to a show-cause notice
If the document is an open show-cause notice, prepare a response that deals with the allegations in that notice. The portal catalogue identifies DRC-06 as the reply to a show-cause notice, but it does not provide a complete, current screen-by-screen filing path. Follow the options presented for the particular proceeding in your GST Portal account rather than relying on guessed button names or assuming that every notice uses the same menu.

- Make a case record. Note the GSTIN, notice number, issuing authority, legal provision, tax period, date of issue, stated deadline, and the exact action requested. Download the complete notice and attachments from the portal.
- Open the relevant portal case. Sign in to the GST Portal using the account associated with the GSTIN. Locate the notice or proceeding and check the available case functions. Menu names can differ by proceeding and may change as the portal is updated.
- Confirm the response route. Check the notice and the portal’s proceeding-specific instructions. If it is a show-cause notice for which a reply is invited, the official forms catalogue identifies DRC-06 as the reply form. Do not treat an order or a DRC-01D recovery intimation as an open show-cause notice.
- Answer each point in order. Structure the reply by allegation, paragraph, or issue number. State whether you agree or disagree, explain the relevant facts, and show how your records support your position. If an amount or period is disputed, make the calculation and the period clear.
- Attach relevant supporting records. Depending on the allegation, useful records may include returns, invoices, ledgers, payment records, or earlier correspondence. The sources do not establish one attachment list that is mandatory in every case, so select documents that substantiate the points you make and follow any instructions in the notice.
- Check the deadline and submit through the indicated function. Use the date stated for your proceeding and verify it against the applicable legal provision. The reviewed official materials do not establish one reply deadline for every document called an assessment notice. Do not assume a deadline from another form or case applies.
- Keep a complete filing record. Retain the final reply, the files submitted with it, the notice and attachments, and any submission acknowledgement or reference number shown by the portal. These records help you establish what you filed and when.
Make the reply easy to verify
For each issue, make the connection between the authority’s claim, your response, and your evidence obvious. Identify the relevant tax period and record, explain any reconciliation or calculation, and label attachments so the reader can locate them. Avoid sending a large collection of unrelated records without explaining how they support the reply.
A useful way to organize a draft is to follow the notice’s own order. For each allegation, identify the paragraph or issue, state your position, give the facts that explain it, and point to the corresponding record or calculation. If the notice concerns more than one period or amount, keep those items distinct instead of combining them into an unexplained total. This makes it easier to compare the notice with your response and reduces the risk of overlooking a point.

Before submission, review the draft against the notice line by line. Confirm that every allegation has an answer, the figures and periods in your response are consistent with the records you cite, and the attachments actually support the statements made. Check that you are using the case-specific portal function for the proceeding and that the files and response are ready before the stated date. Do not assume that opening the notice or saving a draft amounts to submitting a reply.
The official materials identify DRC-06 as a reply form but do not establish one universal attachment checklist, a universal sequence of portal screens, or a particular acknowledgement screen for every proceeding. Treat the live instructions shown in your account and the notice’s requirements as controlling for the filing mechanics. As a practical recordkeeping measure, save the completed response, submitted attachments, notice and any portal acknowledgement or reference number that appears.
If you cannot understand the allegation, the calculation, or the legal basis from the notice and attachments, seek review from a qualified GST practitioner or tax lawyer. A case involving a substantial demand or complex facts merits individual review before filing. Professional review is a category of assistance, not a mandatory service established for every notice; the need depends on the case and your ability to assess it.

If an order has already been issued, check appeal options
An issued order is a different procedural stage from a show-cause notice. DRC-07 is described in the GST Portal forms catalogue as a summary of an order. Do not assume that a DRC-06 reply is still the appropriate response after an order has been made.
The GST Portal appeal FAQ lists assessment orders under sections 62, 63, and 64 among the order types that can be appealed through the portal’s appeal process. That does not establish the applicable deadline or every condition for your particular order. Read the full order, identify its legal provision and date, and check the portal’s appeal instructions promptly. Confirm the limitation period and any preconditions that apply to that specific order; do not let an unanswered-notice workflow delay consideration of a post-order remedy.
To orient yourself, compare the order’s form or heading with its summary, identify the provision under which it was made, and note the date shown on the order. Then follow the appeal instructions relevant to that order type. The appeal FAQ confirms a portal appeal route for listed order types, including assessment orders under sections 62, 63 and 64, but it is not a substitute for checking the particular order’s requirements. Do not assume the appeal period is the same as the response date on an earlier show-cause notice.
If the order does not appear to match the document you expected, or the portal does not show the function you anticipated, obtain advice promptly. The important distinction is the procedural stage: an open notice invites a response under its procedure; an issued order calls for checking appeal or another available remedy. The applicable period and conditions depend on the governing law and the specific order, so a general timetable should not be substituted for case-specific verification.
How to handle a DRC-01D recovery intimation
DRC-01D is a recovery intimation, not a show-cause notice to which you can submit a DRC-06 reply. The GST Portal’s 2024 functionality note says it is available after sign-in under Services > User Services > View Additional Notices/Orders. It also says a taxpayer cannot submit a reply to DRC-01D and must pay the specified amount within seven days of issue, after which recovery proceedings may begin. Those instructions apply to DRC-01D; do not transfer them to DRC-01 or to other GST communications.

If you receive DRC-01D, confirm that the document is in fact this recovery intimation and read the specified amount and issue date carefully. The seven-day payment period in the 2024 GST Portal functionality note is tied to DRC-01D, not to every assessment notice or demand. The note says a reply function is not available for this intimation, so do not spend time trying to file a DRC-06 response to it as though it were an open show-cause notice.
If you dispute the amount or need to understand what remedy is available, get case-specific professional help promptly. The seven-day instruction in the cited note is specific to this recovery intimation, not a general deadline for responding to GST assessment notices. The materials described here do not establish a universal alternative response route for disputing DRC-01D, so check the facts and seek advice rather than assuming that another notice’s procedure applies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Deadlines and mistakes that can change the next step
There is no single response date that can safely be applied to every notice described informally as an “assessment notice.” The correct action and time limit depend on the document, proceeding, governing provision, and facts. Use the notice’s stated date as an immediate checkpoint, then verify the rule and any portal instructions for that case.
For an order, check the applicable appeal limitation period and any preconditions rather than carrying forward the show-cause reply deadline. For DRC-01D, the GST Portal’s 2024 functionality note specifies seven days from issue for payment of the amount stated. That narrow instruction should not be generalized to DRC-01, DRC-07, or any other communication.

A short decision checklist
- Is it a show-cause notice? Read the full notice and identify what answer is requested. If the proceeding calls for a reply, DRC-06 is the form identified for show-cause notice replies in the GST Portal forms catalogue.
- Is it an order? Check the full order and its legal provision. The appeal FAQ lists assessment orders under sections 62, 63 and 64 among the order types appealable through the portal; verify the specific deadline and conditions promptly.
- Is it DRC-01D? Follow the separate recovery-intimation instructions. The 2024 GST Portal note says no reply can be submitted to DRC-01D and specifies payment of the stated amount within seven days of issue.
- Is the document type or requested action unclear? Do not guess based on the phrase “assessment notice.” Check the portal case information and obtain qualified advice where needed.
- Have you finished filing? Keep the notice, response, supporting records and any submission proof together so you can establish what was filed and when.

Which form should I use to reply to a GST notice?
It depends on the document and stage. The GST Portal forms catalogue describes DRC-06 as the taxpayer’s reply to a show-cause notice, DRC-01 as the tax official’s summary of a show-cause notice, and DRC-07 as a summary of an order. Do not use DRC-06 automatically for every assessment-related communication. Check the full notice and its proceeding-specific instructions.
What is the difference between GST DRC-01 and DRC-06?
The GST Portal forms catalogue describes DRC-01 as a summary of a show-cause notice and DRC-06 as the taxpayer’s reply to a show-cause notice. DRC-01 is not the taxpayer’s reply form. Read the underlying notice and follow the procedure and deadline stated for that proceeding.
What is DRC-07, and can I still file a show-cause reply?
The GST Portal forms catalogue describes DRC-07 as a summary of an order. If an order has already issued, do not assume that the show-cause reply stage remains open. Read the full order and promptly check whether an appeal or another remedy is available and what deadline and conditions apply.
How do I appeal a GST assessment order?
The GST Portal appeal FAQ lists assessment orders under sections 62, 63 and 64 among order types that can be appealed through the portal’s appeal process. Check the full order, its legal provision and date, then follow the portal’s appeal instructions for that order. Verify the applicable limitation period and any preconditions; the FAQ does not supply one universal deadline for every order.
Can I reply to a DRC-01D notice online?
The GST Portal’s 2024 functionality note says a reply cannot be submitted to DRC-01D. It identifies the after-login location as Services > User Services > View Additional Notices/Orders and says the specified amount must be paid within seven days of issue, after which recovery proceedings may begin. These instructions apply to DRC-01D only, not to other GST notices.
What is the deadline to respond to a GST assessment notice?
There is no single deadline established for every document informally called an assessment notice. Check the date stated in the notice and verify the governing provision and portal instructions for that proceeding. A separate seven-day payment instruction applies to DRC-01D in the GST Portal’s 2024 functionality note; it should not be applied to other forms.
What documents should I attach to my GST notice reply?
There is no universal attachment list established for every case. Choose records that support the particular response, which may include returns, invoices, ledgers, payment records or earlier correspondence depending on the allegation. Follow any instructions in the notice and make clear which record supports each point.

The Bottom Line
Identify the form, proceeding, legal provision and requested action before choosing a portal response. For a show-cause notice, the GST Portal forms catalogue identifies DRC-06 as the taxpayer’s reply; an issued order calls for prompt review of appeal or other remedy options; and DRC-01D has separate recovery instructions, including a seven-day payment period in the GST Portal’s 2024 functionality note. Verify the deadline and live portal steps for your specific case, and keep a complete record of what you submit.
