Research Toast (NYSE: TOST) by tracing how its restaurant technology platform turns customer locations and payment volume into revenue, gross profit, cash flow and, ultimately, shareholder returns. Start with Toast’s latest SEC filings, track its operating measures over time, examine seasonality and risks, and only then compare its valuation with a dated share price and a consistent financial metric. What Toast does and what to examine first
Toast sells a platform for restaurants and retail businesses that combines software, payment processing, financial technology services and hardware. Its business has connected moving parts: more locations can increase the base of potential customers; customer sales processed through Toast affect gross payment volume (GPV); and product adoption can influence subscription and financial technology revenue. Growth in these measures matters, but it does not by itself show whether customer economics are attractive or whether the company is generating durable profits.

Toast’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 reports the following. Keep each measure tied to its period, and distinguish company-defined operating measures from GAAP financial results.

Toast attributed Q2 revenue growth primarily to financial technology solutions and subscriptions, supported by more locations and continued product adoption. Those explanations are a starting point for analysis, not a substitute for checking the underlying statements and trends.
Build a time series that explains growth
A single quarter cannot show whether growth is broad-based, seasonal or translating into better economics. Build a spreadsheet from several quarters and years of filings, using consistent definitions and periods.

Locations, churn and customer expansion
Track Toast’s published Location count and definition, then look for disclosures about additions, churn and expansion within existing customers. An expanding installed base can support scale, but location growth alone does not establish retention quality, profitability or the cost of acquiring and serving customers.

GPV and payment economics
Follow GPV alongside Toast Processing Locations and financial technology solutions revenue and costs. Ask whether GPV growth reflects more locations, increased sales at existing customers, or both. Then examine how that volume converts into revenue and gross profit; a larger processed-dollar total is not equivalent to a larger dollar of company earnings.

Subscriptions and other revenue
Compare subscription revenue, its growth rate and its gross profit with the rest of the business. Toast reported subscription revenue of $290 million in Q2 2026, compared with $227 million in Q2 2025. Hardware and professional services was $48 million in Q2 2026 versus $47 million in Q2 2025. These categories have different roles in the business, so do not treat total revenue growth as a uniform signal.
Profit, cash generation and dilution
Read the income statement and cash-flow statement together. Examine operating cash flow, capital expenditures, working-capital movements, capitalized software and stock-based compensation. Compare GAAP profitability across periods and consider whether cash generation supports the earnings picture. Adjusted EBITDA and ARR can add context, but they are not replacements for GAAP results; review Toast’s definitions and stated limitations before comparing them with other companies.

Also track diluted share count, share-based compensation and repurchases. Revenue or earnings growth per share can differ from growth in company-wide totals when the share count changes.
Account for seasonality and business risks
Toast says financial technology revenue is largely driven by GPV and is seasonal. Historically, revenue per Toast Processing Location has been stronger in the second and third quarters, when customers often have greater sales in warmer months; the pattern varies by region. Compare like quarters across years and inspect more than one period before treating a strong quarter as a normal run rate.

The company also identifies global financial, economic and political events, inflation, interest rates, tariffs, consumer spending and restaurant operations as factors that can affect results. In its Q2 2026 filing, Toast said there had been no material changes to the risk factors in its 2025 annual report, while noting that additional risks may arise and historical results may not predict future performance. Its filing also cautions: “You should not rely upon forward-looking statements as predictions of future events.” Actual events and results may differ materially from those statements.
Use the filings as your primary sources
- Find the latest 10-Q and 10-K. Use Toast’s investor-relations page for results and the SEC filing system for the official filings. Record the period end and filing date, and confirm no newer report has replaced the period you are using.
- Read beyond the earnings headline. Review the business overview and management discussion, then examine the financial statements, footnotes and risk factors. Headlines rarely show how revenue mix, costs, cash flow or share count changed.
- Record operating and financial measures consistently. Include Locations, GPV, subscription revenue, financial technology revenue, hardware revenue, GAAP net income, operating cash flow, capital expenditures and diluted shares. Note whether each figure is quarterly, year-to-date, trailing 12 months or a point-in-time balance.
- Check definitions before comparing companies. In particular, Toast describes ARR as an operating measure and not a forecast of future revenue. Do not compare differently defined measures as though they were interchangeable.
- Write down evidence for and against your view. Separate reported facts from your assumptions, and identify what future filing or operating result would weaken your thesis.
Assess valuation only after the business review
A valuation needs a share-price date and a metric that matches the question. Calculate or obtain market capitalization and enterprise value using current, dated market data, then compare them with a consistent measure such as earnings, gross profit or cash flow. Use comparable periods and account for share-count changes and stock-based compensation. A revenue multiple alone may obscure differences in margins and cash generation.
There is no current share price, valuation multiple, consensus estimate or peer valuation established here. The Q2 2026 results therefore cannot establish whether TOST is cheap or expensive today. Before drawing that conclusion, independently verify the market data, choose an appropriate comparison set and state the assumptions behind any forecast or multiple.
Turn the research into a decision
Conclude with a balanced case rather than a buy-or-sell label unsupported by the numbers. State which operating trends support your view, what could undermine it, how much depends on assumptions about retention, payment volume, margins and cash flow, and what evidence you still need. The goal is a decision you can revisit when Toast reports again—not a prediction disguised as certainty.
