Research an NGX-listed company from its own audited and interim financial statements, material announcements and current market data—not from a chart or an unsourced summary. Then test whether its profits turn into cash, whether its balance sheet and share count support the per-share story, whether the price is reasonable against relevant comparators, and whether disclosure or trading risks could make the investment hard to assess or exit. This is a research framework, not a recommendation to buy or sell.
Where to find NGX company financial statements
Start with the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) X-Compliance Report. It lists categories including released financials, early and delinquent audited-account filers, delinquent quarterly filers, and companies operating below listing standards. Use it to locate disclosures and screen for issues; do not assume its issuer listings are a complete archive or that an item shown is the latest available.

NGX says periodic and ongoing material-event disclosures should be released to the exchange in a timely manner. Its listing-requirements summary describes continuing quarterly, semi-annual and annual reporting obligations and IFRS accounting, but it is a summary rather than the rulebook. Check the current NGX rules and the issuer’s filings for the applicable obligations and reporting dates. NGX’s X-Compliance page also cautions that it does not guarantee the report’s accuracy or reliability and accepts no liability for decisions based on it. Confirm an important alert against the underlying exchange notice or company disclosure.
For historical orientation, NGX’s X-Factbook describes listed-company profiles, five-year financial performance, corporate-action history, market statistics and index performance. It is a paid modular reference, so do not assume the full resource is free; verify significant figures in the issuer’s own published statements or an appropriate current market-data source. NGX’s X-DataPortal describes data and report access, including free access to seven days of historical price data and a Top Ten Brokers Performance report. Portal access terms and data freshness can change, so check them directly before relying on the information.

How to analyse a Nigerian stock before buying
Build a dated evidence set for the company: several annual periods where available, the latest interim statement, material announcements, current share information, and the market price on a recorded date. Use the same reporting period and share-count basis whenever you compare per-share figures or calculate a valuation. The aim is to understand the business and its financial condition before deciding what the shares might be worth.
Read the statements together
Track revenue, operating profit, finance costs, tax, net income, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, borrowings, cash, receivables, inventory and equity across annual and interim periods. Do not read reported profit in isolation: compare it with cash generated from operations and changes in working capital. Repeated divergence between earnings and cash generation is a reason to investigate the issuer’s circumstances, not by itself evidence of misconduct.
Read the notes as well as the headline statements. Look for accounting policies, related-party transactions, contingent liabilities, segment concentration and events after the reporting period. Consider whether a change in margins, borrowing, receivables or inventory has an explanation in the company’s disclosures, and distinguish a one-off item from a recurring source of earnings.

Check share count, dividends and corporate actions
Review the current number of shares and any rights issues, placements, bonus issues, splits or other corporate actions. A share-count change can alter earnings per share and ownership percentages even if total profit is unchanged. Use the issuer’s relevant notice and current share information when calculating earnings per share, market capitalization or dividend yield. NGX’s X-Factbook lists corporate-action history, but verify a material event in the issuer’s notice.
Examine dividends as both a shareholder outcome and a cash-flow question: establish what was declared, for which period, and whether cash generation and balance-sheet needs appear consistent with sustaining distributions. A past payment does not establish that a future dividend will be declared or maintained.
How to judge whether a Nigerian stock is cheap
No single multiple establishes fair value. Choose a measure that fits the business, define its earnings or balance-sheet basis, and align the reporting period, share count and price date. The NGX resources described here provide historical and market context; they do not prescribe a universal valuation formula or supply a current market-wide fair-value benchmark.
| Measure | When it may help | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Price-to-earnings (P/E) | When earnings are positive and reasonably representative. | Use a clearly defined earnings period and current share count; investigate one-off earnings before treating the multiple as meaningful. |
| Price-to-book (P/B) | When balance-sheet value is informative for the business. | Consider the quality and relevance of the assets and liabilities behind book value. |
| Enterprise value to operating earnings | When comparing businesses with similar operations and a meaningful operating-earnings measure. | Use consistent definitions and periods, and account for differences in debt and cash. |
| Dividend yield | When a dividend has been declared and appears sustainable. | Use the relevant declared dividend and a dated share price; a past distribution does not guarantee another. |
Compare the company with genuinely similar listed businesses and with its own history. Align fiscal periods, currencies, share counts and price dates; account for relevant inflation or accounting context and separate one-off items. A lower multiple may reflect weaker growth, governance concerns, limited liquidity, poorer balance-sheet quality or greater business risk rather than an overlooked bargain.

What risks should you check before investing?
Business and financial resilience
Identify the company’s revenue drivers, cyclicality, customer or product concentration and growth prospects. Then assess multi-year margins, cash conversion, leverage and working capital. Consider how the business could respond to pressure on inputs, funding or currency-related costs, using issuer disclosures rather than assuming the same exposure applies to every Nigerian company.
Disclosure and exchange-compliance signals
In addition to filing delays, the X-Compliance Report includes categories for free-float deficiencies, breaches, enforcement actions, companies operating below listing standards and companies slated for delisting. Treat a flag as a prompt to inspect the underlying notice and company disclosure, not as a substitute for them or a complete assessment of the issuer.
Liquidity and the ability to trade
Check current traded volume and value, trading frequency, free float and bid-ask conditions where available. Low activity can make it harder to enter or exit at a desired price; a displayed last trade does not guarantee that you can transact at that price. NGX provides market-data resources and tracks free-float deficiencies, but those resources do not establish current liquidity for any particular company without checking the issuer’s current data.
Governance, dilution and shareholder outcomes
Review relevant governance disclosures, related-party dealings, enforcement notices and corporate actions alongside the financial statements. Consider whether new share issuance could dilute existing holders, and whether declared dividends appear compatible with the company’s cash needs. These are issuer-specific questions; an exchange category or a historical dividend alone cannot settle them.

A practical research sequence
- Identify the issuer and reporting dates. Confirm the company’s identity, the latest available annual and interim statements, and the period each statement covers.
- Find filings and alerts. Use the NGX X-Compliance Report to locate released financials and review relevant filing and compliance categories. Verify material alerts against the original notice or company disclosure.
- Build a multi-period financial picture. Track earnings, cash flow, debt, liquidity, working capital and equity; read the notes for accounting policies, related parties, contingencies, segments and subsequent events.
- Reconcile the per-share inputs. Check the current share count and relevant corporate actions before calculating earnings per share, market capitalization or dividend yield.
- Set a dated valuation comparison. Record the price date, align the financial period and share count, select a suitable measure, and compare with relevant peers and the issuer’s history.
- Assess marketability and access. Review trading activity and free-float information, then confirm how to transact through an appropriately registered dealer before funding an account.
Keep a short record of the source and date for each important input. Filing status, announcements, market prices, trading data and portal availability can change; refresh them before acting rather than treating an old analysis as current.
How to access NGX-listed shares
NGX says an investor must appoint a registered Trading License Holder or stockbroker to purchase securities in the primary or secondary market and facilitate account opening and trading. It also identifies the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) as the licensed central depository, clearing and settlement institution; holdings can be domiciled there through the appointed dealer or a licensed custodian. Verify the dealer’s current registration and account-opening and KYC requirements with official sources before funding an account.
How to compare two NGX stocks
Use the same dated framework for each company rather than comparing one issuer’s headline multiple with another’s without context.
- Business economics: revenue drivers, cyclicality, concentration and growth prospects.
- Earnings quality and resilience: multi-year margins, cash conversion, leverage, working capital and exposure to operating-cost or funding pressure.
- Price paid: valuation on aligned inputs against relevant peers and the company’s own history, with one-off earnings treated transparently.
- Marketability and disclosure: trading activity, free float, filing recency and relevant exchange-compliance signals.
- Shareholder outcomes: dilution, corporate actions, dividend record and capacity, and governance or enforcement concerns.
These comparison axes help organize issuer-specific evidence; they are not an NGX ranking of companies. A defensible view depends on the dated filings, market information and assumptions you can verify for each issuer.
