Start by verifying the token’s exact blockchain and contract address—not just its name or ticker. Then check what the project claims the token does, who controls its contract, how tokens are distributed, whether there is enough credible liquidity to trade, and what independent sources say. Treat anything you cannot verify as unknown; no checklist can prove a token is safe or predict its price.
1. Confirm you have the right token
A name or ticker does not uniquely identify a crypto token. Different tokens can use the same or similar names, and scammers can imitate a real project. Record the token’s blockchain network, contract address, name and symbol, and the project’s official website.

- Find the project’s stated contract address through an official channel you reached independently. Do not rely on a search ad, unsolicited message, or link sent by a promoter.
- Check that address on a blockchain explorer for the relevant network and compare it with the project’s published address.
- Cross-check the address with a token information service, where available. Make sure the service is showing the same network and contract.
- Stop if the addresses conflict or you cannot establish which source is official. Do not assume a familiar name or ticker means you have found the intended asset.
The FTC recommends searching for the company or person and the cryptocurrency name alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint.” That can surface contrary information, but search results alone do not establish whether a token is legitimate.
2. Check what the project claims—and what holders actually receive
Read the project’s white paper or technical documentation as claims from the issuer, not independent proof. Work out what problem the project says it addresses and whether the token is necessary to the product or service.

- Purpose and rights: What can a holder actually do with the token? Does holding it provide a stated right, or is its intended role unclear?
- Supply: How many tokens exist, how can new ones be created, and can any be destroyed?
- Allocation: What share went to founders, investors, the community, a treasury, or other groups?
- Vesting and unlocks: When can locked or vested tokens enter circulation, and who receives them?
- Dependencies: Does the project rely on a product, company, service, or other system that is not yet operating as described?
Separate details you can verify from promises about future adoption, returns, partnerships, or listings. A polished website, large social following, celebrity mention, or prominent exchange listing does not by itself verify a project. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has warned about bogus offerings, impersonation, opaque ownership, and reliance on celebrity endorsements.
3. Inspect the contract and who can change its behavior
On the relevant blockchain explorer, look for the contract’s published source code and the verification status shown for it. Source verification can help establish whether published source and compilation settings correspond to deployed code; it is not the same as proving the code is safe. Ethereum.org’s “Verifying smart contracts” page, last updated October 22, 2025, distinguishes source verification from formal verification of correctness. It also explains that partial verification may not compare the metadata hash, so it may not establish an exact source match.
Check privileged functions
For the particular contract, find out whether privileged addresses can mint tokens, pause transfers, blacklist addresses, change fees, upgrade implementation code, or otherwise alter how the token behaves. These powers vary by contract; do not assume one token has the same controls as another.

Pay particular attention to who holds those permissions, whether control is concentrated in one address, and what process governs changes. An upgradeable or proxy design makes it important to identify who can change the implementation. Ethereum.org warns that access controls can create centralization and single points of failure, and that deployed code usually cannot simply be patched after a flaw is found.

Read audit claims narrowly
If a project says its contract was audited, look for the actual report. Check the contract addresses and versions covered, the date, unresolved findings, and whether the deployed code matches the reviewed version. An audit claim without a scoped report is difficult to assess; even a report does not establish that a contract or project is safe.
If you cannot interpret the code or report, record that as a limit to your investigation rather than treating a verification badge or audit logo as a safety certificate.
4. Assess token distribution, market activity, and exit conditions
Token details pages and explorers may show holder balances, transfers, transactions, pool liquidity, volume, market capitalization, and fully diluted valuation. These figures describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable measures of a token’s quality.

|---|---|---|
| Holder concentration | Whether a small number of wallets hold a large share of the visible supply. | Who controls every wallet, whether holders will sell, or what the price will do. |
| Pool liquidity | How much trading liquidity appears to be available in a particular pool. | That you can sell your amount at the displayed price or exit without significant price impact. |
| Trading volume | The reported amount of trading over a stated period and on the venues included by the service. | That activity is broad, durable, or sufficient for your intended sale. |
| Market capitalization | A valuation based on the circulating supply and price used by the data provider. | The value of all tokens that may eventually exist or the amount you could realize by selling. |
| Fully diluted valuation | A valuation estimate that accounts for a broader potential token supply. | That future supply will be released at once, or that the estimate reflects realizable value. |
Compare market capitalization with fully diluted valuation and the project’s unlock schedule. A large gap may make future supply particularly important to investigate, but it is not by itself proof of misconduct or a forecast of price movement.

Ask whether liquidity appears sufficient for a sale of the size you might consider, whether trading is spread across credible venues, and whether activity is concentrated in a few wallets or a short period. A token details service such as Uniswap’s may display pool and market metrics and warnings about potentially malicious activity or concentrated ownership. These are indicators, not proof of wrongdoing; the metrics and warnings apply to the service’s interface and supported networks, and the absence of a warning does not establish safety. There is no universal safe threshold for liquidity or holder concentration.
5. Look for contrary evidence and pressure tactics
Search independently for the token, its contract address, issuer, founders, and promoters. Combine names with terms such as “review,” “scam,” “complaint,” “lawsuit,” or “hack.” Prefer material you can evaluate—such as regulator notices, court records, named audit reports, project disclosures, and on-chain records—over anonymous testimonials. A lack of negative search results is not proof that a project is trustworthy.
Be especially cautious about:
- Guaranteed profits, unusually high returns, or claims that an investment has little or no risk. The FTC says guaranteed-profit claims are not credible.
- Urgent pressure to buy, private messages directing you to a particular investment, or claims that you must act before you can verify the details.
- Impersonated identities, endorsements you cannot independently confirm, or unclear ownership and control.
- Requests for extra payments to release supposed profits or recover funds. The SEC warns that crypto-related losses can be difficult to recover.
Do not treat a promoter’s explanation of a warning or adverse report as a substitute for checking the underlying evidence.

Current project details, contract controls, market measures, venues, and laws can change, so record when you checked them and recheck them before acting. If an important claim remains unverifiable, label it unknown. The SEC’s 2023 investor guidance says crypto asset securities can be exceptionally risky and volatile, may be illiquid or become untradable, and may lack protections investors expect from other financial accounts. Whether a particular token is a security or receives a specific protection depends on the facts and jurisdiction.
7. Consider custody and your ability to absorb a loss
Research does not remove the risks of holding or trading a token. Crypto investments can be volatile, difficult to sell, and hard to recover after loss. The SEC’s 2023 guidance advises putting at risk only money you can afford to lose entirely; consider whether that is true for you and whether the investment fits your own plan and risk tolerance.
If you use a wallet or custodian, understand the arrangement before transferring funds. A wallet manages private keys rather than holding the assets themselves. The SEC’s custody guidance advises researching custodians, checking fees, protecting seed phrases, and using strong account security. The protections and responsibilities involved depend on the service, custody arrangement, and jurisdiction.
