For most individuals, the fastest way to get an IRS transcript is through an IRS Individual Online Account: sign in, open Tax Records, then select the transcript you need. First choose the right record—return, account, combined, wage and income, or non-filing—because a transcript is not a copy of your filed return.
Choose the transcript that matches your task
The IRS offers several records, and they answer different questions. Use this guide before requesting one:

| Record | What it shows | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Tax return transcript | Most line items from the original Form 1040-series return as filed, including forms and schedules. It does not show later changes. If the IRS changed figures during processing, it may show original “per return” and corrected “per computer” amounts. | You need to confirm what was on the original return. The IRS says this usually meets mortgage lenders’ needs. |
| Tax account transcript | Basic account details, including filing status, taxable income, payment types, and post-filing changes. | You need account activity, payments, or processing changes rather than a reproduction of the original return. |
| Record of account transcript | Combines return and account transcript information. | You amended a return or the IRS adjusted the account after processing. |
| Wage and income transcript | Information-return data the IRS has received, such as Forms W-2, 1098, 1099, and 5498. It may not include every information return issued to you. | You need information reported to the IRS by employers, banks, or other payers. Current processing-year data is generally available in the first week of February, but timing can depend on processing. |
| Verification of non-filing letter | States that, as of the request date, the IRS has no record of a processed Form 1040-series return. | You need evidence of IRS processing status. The letter does not determine whether you were required to file. |
The IRS describes access to a current-year non-filing letter after June 15 and access for the prior three tax years. See the IRS transcript types and ordering guidance for availability details.

Check which tax years are available
Availability depends on both the transcript type and how you request it. The IRS notes that exceptions and other conditions can limit availability.
| Request method | General year availability | Transcript types |
|---|---|---|
| Individual Online Account | Current tax year and three prior tax years for tax return and record of account transcripts; current year and nine prior years for tax account transcripts, generally. | Online access includes transcript options listed in the account, subject to availability. |
| Get Transcript by Mail or automated phone service | Current tax year and three prior tax years, generally. | Tax return and tax account transcripts. |
| Form 4506-T | Use for older years when available through this process. | Any transcript type, including types not available through the mail or phone menus. |
“Current tax year” refers to the tax year shown as current in the IRS service, not necessarily the calendar year in which you make the request. Check the IRS year and transcript availability information before relying on a specific year being accessible.

Review the transcript—and know when you need a return copy
A transcript is a summary or record of IRS data, not a photocopy of the return you filed. A tax return transcript reflects original return information and does not include later amendments or account adjustments. If you amended the return or the IRS adjusted your account, request a record of account transcript to see the combined return and account information.
If you need a complete copy of the filed return with attachments, request it using Form 4506, not Form 4506-T. The IRS explains the distinction in its transcript guidance and Form 4506 information.
