If you received an unexpected call, text, email, or letter about your Social Security number, account, or benefit payment, report the contact through the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General (SSA OIG) scam reporting route. If you suspect fraud within Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), use SSA OIG’s separate fraud reporting options. If someone is telling you to move money, hang up and call your bank using the number on your card or statement. If your benefit direct deposit may have been changed without your permission, contact SSA directly.
These steps serve different purposes: an OIG report helps authorities investigate suspected scams or program fraud; contacting your bank or SSA addresses an account or payment that may need immediate attention.

Choose the reporting route that matches what happened
Start by identifying whether you are reporting an impersonation attempt or suspected fraud in a government program. A person pretending to be from Social Security and claiming there is a problem with your Social Security number, account, or payment belongs on the scam route. A concern that someone is improperly receiving or using Social Security or SSI benefits belongs on the fraud route. If the event also exposed your money or changed your payment instructions, take the separate bank or SSA action as well; an OIG report does not replace it.

SSA OIG describes the scam-reporting question this way: “Did you receive a suspicious call, letter, text, or email about an alleged problem with your Social Security number, account, or payments?” If that captures your experience, use the scam route rather than assuming the message itself came from SSA.

You do not need to wait until you lose money to report an impersonation attempt. The online form asks whether payment was requested and whether you experienced a financial loss, so it can capture an attempt as well as a scam that led to a payment. Answer those questions accurately, including when the answer is no. If the same incident involved an impersonation message and suspected misuse of an SSA or SSI program, the two routes address different issues and may both be appropriate.
Report a Social Security impersonation scam
Submit the online scam report
- Open SSA OIG’s Report Fraud page and choose the route for reporting a scam, or go directly to the online scam form.
- Describe what the contact claimed was wrong. The form asks about the alleged issue, how the person contacted you, and the circumstances of the contact.
- Answer the questions about whether the scammer requested payment, whether you paid, and whether you experienced a financial loss. Be accurate; if no money was lost or requested, say so.
- Provide a clear description of what happened and the personal and contact details the form requests. Include the sequence of events and relevant specifics you remember, rather than guessing at details you do not know.
- Review your answers and submit the report. SSA OIG says information in reports helps it identify trends, refine strategies, and take legal action against people behind scam activity.
The form requests identifying and contact information as well as event details. SSA OIG says providing information is voluntary, but incomplete information may limit its ability to conduct a complete investigation. You can decide what to provide; leaving out information may make it harder for investigators to understand or follow up on the incident.
What details are useful to have ready
The online form asks about the event rather than requiring you to prove who was behind it. Before filling it out, collect whatever details you already have: the contact method, what the person said was wrong, what they asked you to do or pay, whether you shared information or money, and what happened afterward. A short timeline can help keep the account clear. Do not delay contacting your bank or SSA while trying to assemble a perfect report if an account or payment may be at risk.
- Record whether the contact was a call, letter, text, or email.
- Recall the alleged problem involving your Social Security number, account, or payment.
- Note any request for personal information, payment, or a money transfer.
- State whether you complied and whether there was a financial loss.
- Give a concise description in your own words and distinguish facts you observed from anything you are unsure about.
These details align with the categories the scam form asks about. Do not include information that is not requested or make assumptions simply to fill a gap.
For example, you can describe an unexpected call, the alleged account problem, and the instruction to send money or change a deposit. Then state whether you followed the instruction, whether any money was lost, and what you know about the outcome. If you cannot recall a detail, say so rather than estimating. A straightforward description is more useful than a guess about the caller’s identity or motive.
Because the form asks for personal and contact details, review what it requests before submitting and provide only information you are comfortable providing. SSA OIG states that reporting information is voluntary. That does not mean every report will result in individual follow-up; it means you can choose what to submit, while recognizing that missing information can limit a complete investigation. The agency says the reports help identify scam trends, refine strategies, and support legal action against those behind scam activity.
Report suspected fraud in Social Security or SSI
If your concern is that someone is committing fraud, waste, or abuse in Social Security or SSI programs—not simply pretending to be an SSA employee—SSA directs people to its Office of the Inspector General. The SSA FAQ lists online reporting, telephone, fax, and postal mail. Its contact information and hotline schedule were published in the FAQ dated August 11, 2026.

The published hotline hours are limited, so the telephone route may not be available when you are ready to report. The FAQ also lists online, fax, and postal options. Choose among the methods it provides based on what is practical for you; a suspected program-fraud report is still separate from urgent steps to protect your own bank account or benefit payment.
If you choose the telephone method, note the time zone: the listed hours are Eastern Time, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays, excluding federal holidays. If that window does not work, the SSA FAQ also points to online reporting and lists fax and mail options. These are reporting methods for suspected fraud in Social Security or SSI programs; they are not a substitute for calling your bank about funds that may be at risk or contacting SSA about an unauthorized direct-deposit change.
Keep the difference between the two OIG routes in mind. A scam report describes the suspicious contact and the alleged problem it used to pressure you. A fraud report raises suspected fraud, waste, or abuse in a Social Security or SSI program. If you are uncertain which best describes what happened, use the wording and routing options on the official OIG and SSA pages, and report an impersonation contact through the scam route when that is what you experienced.
Act immediately if money or direct deposit may be at risk
If someone tells you to move money
Do not transfer or withdraw funds because an unexpected caller says the money is unsafe, needs to be protected, or must be moved to resolve a Social Security problem. SSA OIG warns that real SSA and OIG employees will not unexpectedly ask for personal or bank details, threaten to seize a bank account, or direct you to move money for protection. Its September 14, 2026 alert states: “Social Security and other government agencies will never help you transfer or move your money to protect it.”

Hang up and call your bank yourself using the telephone number printed on your bank card or statement. Do not use a number supplied by the caller or rely on an incoming call to verify what is happening. Report the impersonation attempt to SSA OIG separately. The bank contact addresses your potential exposure; the scam report helps OIG investigate the contact.
This is true even if the caller knows some personal details or sounds confident. Do not stay on the line to debate the claim, make a test transfer, or follow instructions to move money into a different account. End the contact and use a number you already trust, such as the one on your card or statement, to speak with your bank. If you did not move money, you can still report the suspicious contact; the form asks whether you paid or had a loss.
If your Social Security benefit direct deposit may have changed
If you discover or suspect that your benefit direct-deposit instruction was changed without your permission, contact SSA directly. Do not follow instructions from an unsolicited caller, texter, or emailer about how to “fix” the deposit. SSA OIG’s September 9, 2026 alert warns that no legitimate contest or prize requires redirecting a federal benefit payment to claim it. If someone links a prize or contest to changing where your benefit is deposited, treat that as a warning sign, not as a legitimate payment procedure.

Report the suspicious contact through OIG’s scam route too, but do not treat that report as a substitute for contacting SSA about the payment instruction. The same distinction applies if money may have been diverted: the report and the account or payment contact solve different problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA direct-deposit offer can sound like an opportunity rather than a threat, but the key warning is the requested change: an unsolicited contact that asks you to redirect a federal benefit in order to claim a prize or contest is not a legitimate requirement. Do not follow the contact’s directions or use contact information it supplies. If you think a change already went through, contact SSA directly to address the benefit payment, then report the suspicious offer to OIG.
Recognize the warning signs before responding
SSA OIG identifies unexpected contact, pressure to act immediately, demands for payment, requests for personal information, and directions to move money as warning signs. A message can be suspicious even if it refers to a real Social Security number, account, or payment concern. The warning signs are about the contact and demands being made; they are not proof that a particular benefit payment is wrong.
- Unprompted urgency: Someone contacts you unexpectedly and says you must act at once.
- Threats about your money: The person threatens to seize your bank account or says you must move funds to protect them.
- Requests for personal or bank details: The contact asks you to provide sensitive information unexpectedly.
- Demands for payment: The person insists you pay to resolve an alleged Social Security problem.
- Unusual payment methods: SSA OIG says real SSA and OIG employees will not demand payment by gift card, gold, prepaid debit card, payment app, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, or cash.
- Prize-linked direct deposit changes: An unsolicited offer says you need to redirect a federal benefit payment to claim a contest or prize.
When one of these signs appears, do not keep negotiating with the contact or use contact details they provide to check the claim. For a demand to move money, hang up and call your bank at a trusted number. For an alleged change to benefit direct deposit, contact SSA directly. Then report the impersonation attempt to SSA OIG.
The payment-method warning is broad: OIG specifically identifies gift cards, gold, prepaid debit cards, payment apps, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, and cash as methods real SSA and OIG employees will not demand. A caller’s claim that one of these is necessary to clear an account issue does not make it an official payment process. Do not pay first and try to verify afterward. Stop, use a trusted bank or SSA contact when relevant, and submit the scam report.

A scam report and an identity-theft report address different aspects of an incident. If your personal information was used for a loan, job, tax return, or another business, SSA directs readers to the Federal Trade Commission’s identity-theft resource through the SSA OIG contact page. Use that route for the identity-theft issue, and report an impersonation attempt to OIG if someone also contacted you pretending there was a Social Security problem.
If the misuse involved a bank account or a benefit-payment instruction, contact the affected bank or SSA directly as appropriate. Reporting to one destination does not automatically address the other part of the incident.

For instance, if someone impersonated SSA and you later learn that your information was used to apply for a loan or obtain a job, these are separate reporting concerns: tell OIG about the scam contact and use the FTC identity-theft resource SSA identifies for the misuse of your information. If a benefit deposit may also have been redirected, contact SSA directly about that payment. Do not assume that one online report automatically reaches every organization that may need to address a separate problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What an OIG report does—and what it does not replace
SSA OIG says scam-report information helps it identify patterns, refine strategies, and take legal action against people behind scam activity. A report gives the agency information about the contact and what it involved. The online form requests event, payment, loss, and identifying details that can help describe the circumstances.
Filing an OIG report is not the same as securing a bank account, changing or correcting benefit direct deposit, or reporting identity theft through the FTC resource SSA identifies. If your immediate concern involves funds, call your bank directly using the number on your card or statement. If the benefit deposit instruction may have been altered without authorization, contact SSA. If your information was used for a loan, job, tax return, or other business, use the identity-theft resource linked from OIG’s contact page.
Keep the route tied to the problem: scam contact to OIG’s scam form, suspected fraud in Social Security or SSI to OIG’s fraud options, and account or payment exposure to the institution responsible for the account or benefit. If more than one thing happened, more than one report or contact may be appropriate.
It is also useful to separate what you know from what you suspect when describing an incident. You can report the exact words or instructions you received, the contact method, whether payment was requested, and whether you lost money without claiming to know who made the contact. SSA OIG says reports help it identify trends and support enforcement; the form is a way to provide information, not a promise of a particular investigation result or an immediate fix to your payment.
A practical order of action
- Stop the requested action. Do not share information, send payment, or move money because of an unexpected contact. If told to move money, hang up.
- Protect the exposed account or payment. Call your bank at the number on your card or statement if your funds may be at risk. Contact SSA directly if your benefit direct deposit may have changed without your permission.
- Identify the report type. Use OIG’s scam route for an impersonation call, letter, text, or email about an alleged Social Security number, account, or payment problem. Use OIG’s fraud options for suspected fraud, waste, or abuse within Social Security or SSI.
- Submit the relevant report. For a scam, use the online form and give accurate details about the claim, contact method, requested payment, loss, and what happened. For program fraud, use one of the methods listed in SSA’s fraud FAQ.
- Address identity theft separately if it occurred. If your information was used for a loan, job, tax return, or other business, follow the FTC identity-theft route identified by SSA OIG.
Use only the reporting and contact destinations described by SSA and SSA OIG. An unexpected contact that tells you to transfer money, pay through an unusual method, or redirect a benefit to claim a prize should not determine which official channel you use.
Recommended Free Tools
In short, take the urgent protective action before treating the OIG form as the solution to every part of an incident. A trusted call to your bank is for possible bank-fund exposure; direct contact with SSA is for a possibly unauthorized benefit deposit change; the OIG report records the suspicious contact or suspected program fraud. When the problem spans several of these areas, follow each relevant route rather than waiting for one organization to handle them all.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I report a suspicious Social Security call, text, email, or letter?
Report an unexpected contact alleging a problem with your Social Security number, account, or payment through the SSA OIG scam reporting route at Report Fraud or its online scam form. If money or your benefit payment may be at risk, contact your bank or SSA directly as appropriate; an OIG report does not replace those steps.
How do I report suspected fraud in Social Security or SSI?
SSA directs suspected fraud, waste, or abuse in Social Security or SSI programs to its Office of the Inspector General. The SSA FAQ lists online reporting, the hotline at 1-800-269-0271 (TTY 1-866-501-2101), fax at 1-410-597-0118, and mail to Social Security Fraud Hotline, P.O. Box 17785, Baltimore, MD 21235-7785. The FAQ lists hotline hours as 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays.
Should I report a scam if I did not lose money?
Yes. The scam form asks whether payment was requested and whether you experienced a financial loss, so report accurately even if you did not pay or lose money. SSA OIG says scam reports help it identify trends and refine strategies.
What if a caller tells me to move money to protect it?
Do not transfer or withdraw funds at the caller’s direction. Hang up and call your bank using the number on your card or statement. SSA OIG says government agencies will never help you transfer or move your money to protect it; report the impersonation attempt separately.
What should I do if my benefit direct deposit was changed without permission?
Contact SSA directly if your benefit direct-deposit instruction may have been changed without your permission. Do not follow instructions from an unsolicited contact. You can also report the contact through SSA OIG’s scam route.
Where do I report identity theft involving my Social Security information?
If your personal information was used for a loan, job, tax return, or other business, SSA points readers to the FTC identity-theft resource through the SSA OIG contact page. Report any related impersonation contact to OIG as well, and contact the bank or SSA directly if an account or benefit payment was affected.
Is it safe to leave information blank on the OIG scam form?
SSA OIG says providing information is voluntary, but incomplete information may limit its ability to conduct a complete investigation. Provide accurate details you are comfortable sharing; do not guess to fill in something you do not know.
