How to Report a Scam or Suspicious Message About a Benefit Check

Don’t click or reply to a suspicious benefit-check message. Verify it independently, report it through the right official route, and contact your agency promptly if you shared information or lost money.

If a message about a benefit check seems suspicious, don’t click its links, open attachments, reply, or share personal or payment information. Verify the claim using your benefits agency’s official website or contact details you find independently, then report the message through the route for your country and the channel it arrived on. If you already shared information, opened a link, or lost money, contact the agency’s security team promptly as well; a message report alone does not secure an account or recover funds.

What to do first

  1. Stop interacting with the message. Don’t click a link, download an attachment or app, reply, or provide passwords, identity details, or payment information while the message is unverified.
  2. Check the claim independently. Go to the benefits agency’s official website or account using an address you already know or locate independently. Do not rely on links, phone numbers, email addresses, or caller ID supplied with the message. The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises: “If you have any doubts about a message, contact the organisation directly.” National Cyber Security Centre guidance explains how to find an organisation’s contact details safely. Login.gov also advises checking sender details, treating urgent demands and requests for sensitive information with caution, and verifying through an official website or account; caller ID can be faked. Login.gov guidance
  3. Report it through an official route. The right destination depends on your country, the agency being impersonated, and whether it arrived by email, text, social media, phone, or website. Country-specific examples are below.
  4. Keep the message if the reporting route needs it. Save the original email or take a screenshot before deleting it, but follow the agency’s submission instructions. For example, Services Australia asks for the entire scam email or a screenshot of a text that shows the suspicious link. Services Australia scam guidance

Where to report it

These are official examples for four countries, not a worldwide directory. If your country or benefit program is not listed, use the program’s official contact route and your country’s official fraud-reporting service. Confirm contact details on the agency’s own website because routes can change.

Country Suspicious message or scam report Important distinction
United Kingdom Forward suspicious emails to [email protected] and suspicious texts to 7726, the free service that reports them to the mobile provider. If an online scam or fraud involved lost money or hacking, GOV.UK directs people in England and Wales to Report Fraud and people in Scotland to Police Scotland. GOV.UK scam and fraud reporting Reporting another person’s suspected benefit fraud is a separate process; it is not the route for reporting a message you received. GOV.UK benefit-fraud reporting
Australia Services Australia accepts reports of scams impersonating Services Australia or myGov, including Centrelink, Medicare, and Child Support. Forward the entire scam email, or send a screenshot of a scam text that shows the suspicious link, to [email protected]. Services Australia scam guidance If you opened a suspicious link, shared myGov sign-in details or other personal information, or are concerned about your records, contact its Scams and Identity Theft Helpdesk immediately. Confirm current contact details through the agency’s official website.
Canada Report the matter to the relevant department if it concerns that department’s services, and report scams or fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre even if you were not a victim. Suspicious texts can also be reported to 7726. Government of Canada reporting guidance Use official government sites for benefit information rather than links in the message.
United States Use USAGov’s reporting tool, which asks where the scam occurred and what category it belongs to, or contact the impersonated benefit program through its official route. USAGov scam reporting tool The right agency depends on the program; no particular benefit program is specified here. Login.gov identifies HHS OIG as a route for federal program fraud such as healthcare benefits, not as a universal destination for every benefit-check message. Login.gov guidance

If you clicked, shared information, or lost money

Reporting the message is only one step. Contact the benefits agency using contact details found independently, and ask for its security, identity-theft, or account-recovery route. Tell it what you did—such as entering a password, sharing identifying information, downloading an app, or making a payment—so it can direct you to the appropriate response. Services Australia specifically tells people who opened a suspicious link or shared personal information to contact its Scams and Identity Theft Helpdesk immediately. Services Australia scam guidance

If money was lost or an account was hacked, use the applicable fraud or crime-reporting route for your location as well as contacting the agency. In the UK, for example, the route for loss or hacking differs between England and Wales and Scotland. GOV.UK scam and fraud reporting Reporting a message does not itself secure a compromised account or guarantee recovery of money.

Choose the right kind of report

  • Suspicious communication: Report a suspected phishing email or text through the appropriate channel for that country and message type.
  • Possible victimization: If you disclosed information, your account may be compromised, or money is missing, contact the agency’s security or identity-theft team and the applicable fraud service.
  • Someone else’s suspected benefit fraud: This is a distinct report about suspected fraud against a benefits program, not a report about a scam message sent to you. In the UK, GOV.UK’s separate process is reviewed by DWP; an investigation may take time, and DWP does not provide the outcome. GOV.UK benefit-fraud reporting

The official sources cited here provide country-specific routes for the UK, Australia, Canada, and the United States; they do not establish a single worldwide reporting address or resolve every state, province, territory, or benefit scheme. Use the official site for your own program when these examples do not fit.
