There is no single federal opt-out that deletes your phone number from every mortgage lender, lead generator, or marketing database. To reduce mortgage calls, opt out of prescreened credit offers, register your personal number with the National Do Not Call Registry, and ask each identifiable company to suppress it from that company’s calling list. These steps address different sources of contact; none guarantees removal from every list. Call blocking can help screen calls, but it does not delete your data.
Why you may be getting mortgage calls
A mortgage application or credit inquiry can be followed by offers from companies that received or used information associated with prescreened credit lists. You may also have submitted your number to a mortgage comparison or quote form, or given it directly to a lender or broker. Those are different routes into a company’s marketing records, so one opt-out may not reach all of them.

A mortgage inquiry is one possible reason calls start, but it does not establish exactly which company has your number or how it obtained it. The call could come from a lender, broker, lead generator, or another company. A prescreened-offer opt-out addresses one particular channel; a national telemarketing registration and a direct company request address different parts of the problem.

If you completed a comparison or quote form, look for the company that operated the form and contact it as well as any caller you can identify. Do not assume that the form operator’s request process will contact every lender or lead recipient that may have received your information. Where you cannot verify a caller’s identity, avoid sharing additional personal information just to ask for removal.
Choose the remedy that matches the source
| Route | What it targets | Timing or limit | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| OptOutPrescreen | Prescreened credit and insurance offers based on lists from consumer reporting companies | Online or telephone election lasts five years; a permanent election requires completing and returning the form provided through the process | It is not a universal data-broker opt-out and does not stop every marketing call. |
| National Do Not Call Registry | Covered telemarketing calls to a personal number | Free; telemarketers must update their calling lists at least every 31 days | It does not erase your number from lead databases, and exemptions and other limitations apply. |
| Company-specific do-not-call request | Calls from the particular company receiving the request | Make the request to each company separately and keep a record | It does not automatically bind unrelated companies. |
| Call-blocking tool | Whether unwanted calls reach or ring through to your phone | Depends on the device, carrier, or software you choose | It does not remove contact data from a company’s records. |
| Homebuyers Privacy Protection Act | Certain furnishing of mortgage-related prescreening reports | Effective March 4, 2026; statutory exceptions apply | It does not provide a universal consumer deletion request or erase records already held by other companies. |
The most important distinction is between reducing covered calls and deleting or suppressing a record. OptOutPrescreen and the Do Not Call Registry have defined scopes, while a company-specific request is directed to the business receiving it. None should be described as a single instruction that removes your number from every organization’s files. Blocking is different again: it can help control what reaches your phone, but does not change the records a company holds.
Work through the opt-outs in this order
1. Opt out of prescreened credit and insurance offers
- Go to OptOutPrescreen.com or call 1-888-567-8688.
- Submit the online or telephone election to stop prescreened offers based on lists from major consumer reporting companies. The electronic or telephone election lasts five years.
- If you want the permanent election, complete and return the permanent opt-out form provided through the process.
This is especially relevant if mortgage calls began after a lender checked your credit: mortgage credit inquiries can be associated with competing prescreened offers. The opt-out has a defined scope, however. It does not remove your number from every lender, lead generator, or marketing database, and the Federal Trade Commission cautions that it will not stop every unsolicited offer or all marketing calls.
Think of this step as limiting a particular source of prescreened credit and insurance offers, not as a general instruction to every business that markets mortgages. If the number was gathered through a quote form, from a direct application, or through another marketing channel, that business may need a separate request. You may therefore still need to contact companies that call after submitting the election.
The five-year term applies to the electronic or telephone election. If you want the permanent election, the process requires completing and returning the permanent opt-out form it provides; do not assume that an online or phone election is permanent. Keep a note of the route and date you used so you can distinguish that election from the other steps below.
2. Register your personal number with the National Do Not Call Registry
- Register at DoNotCall.gov, or call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone number you want to register.
- Keep in mind that registration is free and is intended to limit covered sales calls, not to erase your information from a company’s records.
Telemarketers must update their lists at least every 31 days, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Registration does not bar every call: exemptions and other limitations apply. A company may also have a limited period in which it can call following an inquiry or application, which is one reason a direct stop request can still matter.
Use the phone number you want registered when calling the Registry’s telephone number. The process is free, and the Registry is for personal numbers. Its purpose is to help limit covered telemarketing calls; it does not notify every mortgage company that you want your number deleted from its records. If a particular business keeps contacting you, make a separate request to that business rather than relying on national registration alone.
Do not mistake the 31-day list-update requirement for a guarantee that every call will stop within 31 days. It describes how often telemarketers must update their lists, not a promise that the Registry erases a number from all databases or blocks every call. Some calls are outside the Registry’s coverage, and a company-specific request may be appropriate when you know which business is calling.
3. Ask each identified company to stop calling
For an identifiable lender, broker, or lead generator, use its published contact route or tell the representative: “Please stop calling this number and add it to your company-specific do-not-call list.” Make the request clearly and keep a record of the company name, date, caller ID number, and what you asked it to do. Federal Trade Commission telemarketing guidance recognizes the right to prohibit an individual telemarketer from calling by asking to be placed on that company’s do-not-call list.

A company-specific request is different from national registration. It is directed to the company you contact and its own calling list; it does not automatically bind other businesses with separate records. If several companies are calling, make a distinct request to each one you can identify. Keep the request focused on stopping calls to your number, and record the date and any response so you can tell later which company received it.
If you submitted your number on a mortgage comparison or quote form, contact the company that collected it as well. Ask it to stop using or sharing the number for marketing to the extent its policies and applicable law allow. A request to one company should not be treated as a request to every downstream recipient.

A vague request to stop a particular call or a conversation about a mortgage product may not communicate the same thing. If the company provides a published contact route for such requests, use it and keep a copy or note of what you sent.
An inquiry or application can create a limited period in which a company may call. That is not a reason to skip an explicit stop request if you no longer want the calls. The FTC’s guidance recognizes the company-specific request as a way to prohibit an individual telemarketer from calling, even though national registration and the business relationship may have distinct rules and limits.
4. Report persistent calls and treat suspicious robocalls cautiously
If an automated message seems suspicious, hang up rather than pressing a prompt to speak to someone or to request removal. The Federal Trade Commission warns that interacting with robocall prompts can lead to more robocalls. For calls that appear to violate telemarketing rules, use DoNotCall.gov to report them and follow the agency’s robocall guidance.
When reporting, note the number that received the call, the caller ID displayed, and any callback number stated in the message. Caller ID can be unreliable, so preserve the details without assuming the displayed number belongs to the actual caller.
Do not treat a robocall prompt as a safe or verified way to reach the business behind a call. In particular, avoid pressing a key to request removal or to speak with an agent when the call appears suspicious. Hang up, preserve the details you have, and use the official reporting route if the call appears to violate telemarketing rules.
A report and a removal request serve different purposes. Reporting through DoNotCall.gov gives the FTC information about a call that may violate the rules; it is not a request to every mortgage marketer to suppress your number. Continue using the direct request for an identifiable company and the other opt-outs that match the source of the contact.
5. Use blocking as a way to manage calls, not as a list opt-out
Your phone’s built-in controls, carrier tools, or third-party call-blocking tools may screen or reduce unwanted calls. They are a practical secondary measure if calls continue, but blocking changes how calls reach your phone; it does not remove the number from a lender’s, broker’s, or lead generator’s marketing records.

Blocking can make an ongoing wave of calls less disruptive while you work through the administrative steps. The options and results depend on the device, carrier, or software you choose. A blocked or screened call should not be taken as evidence that the caller removed your information, and a quiet phone after enabling a tool does not establish that the underlying marketing record has changed.

There is no need to buy a product to complete the official routes described here. The FTC’s guidance supports call blocking as a way to manage calls, not as a replacement for prescreened-offer opt-outs, national registration, or a direct company-specific request. No particular blocker, app, or privacy service is necessary to ask a company to stop calling.
What the 2026 mortgage trigger-lead law changes
The Homebuyers Privacy Protection Act, Public Law 119-36, was enacted on September 5, 2025. Its amendments took effect 180 days later, on March 4, 2026. The law amends the Fair Credit Reporting Act to restrict when a consumer reporting agency may furnish a consumer report to another person based on a mortgage-related credit transaction.
The statute includes exceptions, including a recipient with documented consumer authorization, the consumer’s current mortgage originator or servicer, and a qualifying insured depository institution or credit union that holds a current account for the consumer. The law therefore limits specified mortgage-related report furnishing; it does not guarantee that all mortgage calls will stop. It also does not retroactively delete contact information already held by lenders, lead generators, prior recipients, or general marketing databases.
The effective date matters: the law is in force as of March 4, 2026. Section 3 of Public Law 119-36 says, “This Act, and the amendments made by this Act, shall take effect on the date that is 180 days after the date of enactment of this Act.” Its subject is specified furnishing of consumer reports in connection with mortgage-related transactions, rather than a universal opt-out form for consumers.
The exceptions also explain why it would be inaccurate to promise that the law stops every contact related to a mortgage. A recipient with documented authorization may fall within an exception; so may a consumer’s current mortgage originator or servicer, and a qualifying bank or credit union that holds the consumer’s current account. The statute narrows a particular channel for report furnishing. It does not itself tell every company that already has your number to erase or suppress it.
If calls continue after the effective date, that alone does not show that the statute has failed or that a caller violated it. The call may arise from a different source or from information already held by a company, and the law contains defined exceptions. Use the practical steps above to address the company and calling list involved, while avoiding assumptions about how a particular caller obtained your information.
Keep a simple record of your requests
A short call log makes it easier to distinguish which companies you contacted and when, and to report a pattern of unwanted calls. Record only what you need to identify the contact and the request:
- Date and time of the call or opt-out request
- Company name, if identified, and how you contacted it
- Number that received the call, displayed caller ID, and any callback number in the message
- The words of your stop request and any response
- Whether you registered nationally or submitted a prescreened-offer opt-out
Do not treat a quiet period after registration or a blocking change as proof that a company deleted your number. The remedies have different scopes, and blocking in particular affects call delivery rather than the underlying marketing record.

Keeping the record simple helps you make a separate request when another company calls, rather than repeating the same general step and expecting it to reach unrelated businesses. Note whether the request went to the lender, broker, quote-form operator, or lead generator. If you report a persistent call, the received number, displayed caller ID, and callback number from the message may all be useful details; preserve them as observations, not as verified proof of the caller’s identity.

Does blocking a number remove me from the caller’s list?
No. Phone, carrier, or third-party blocking tools may screen or reduce calls, but they do not remove your number from a company’s marketing records. Treat blocking as call management, not a deletion or suppression request.
What does the Homebuyers Privacy Protection Act do?
Effective March 4, 2026, it restricts certain furnishing of consumer reports based on mortgage-related credit transactions, subject to statutory exceptions. It does not create a universal deletion request, guarantee that mortgage calls stop, or retroactively erase records companies already hold.
