You can remove a negative credit-report entry when it is inaccurate, incomplete, duplicated, tied to identity theft, or too old to be reported. Accurate, current negative information generally cannot be erased just because it hurts your credit; disputing it or paying a credit-repair company does not change that. The practical first step is to check your reports and dispute specific, supportable errors for free.

Can you remove accurate negative information?

Usually, no. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says, “You generally cannot have negative information removed from your credit report if it is accurate.” Accurate late payments, collections, and similar entries generally remain for the permitted reporting period. A duplicate entry can still be disputed, and information that is not yours because of identity theft follows a separate process. CFPB guidance, last reviewed September 2, 2026.

Do not dispute an entry you know is correct simply to see whether it will be removed. Focus on a specific error or a legitimate reason the item should no longer appear.

How long can negative items stay on a credit report?

Under general federal consumer guidance, most negative information can be reported for up to seven years. Bankruptcies can generally remain for up to 10 years. The CFPB describes a specific rule for lawsuits and judgments: reporting may continue for seven years or until the statute of limitations runs out, whichever is longer. The applicable period depends on the type of information and circumstances; these limits are not a universal deletion date for every record. CFPB explanation of reporting periods.

A credit-reporting period is different from the statute of limitations for collecting a debt. The latter can depend on state law and the debt. If a particular debt or court judgment raises a legal question, consider getting advice specific to your circumstances.

How to dispute a credit-report error

  1. Get and compare your reports. Request them through AnnualCreditReport.com, the route the CFPB identifies for the nationwide consumer reporting companies. Check all three reports: an account, balance, or reporting date may differ by company. CFPB guidance describes a free report every 12 months from each nationwide company and up to six additional Equifax reports during any 12-month period through December 2026; check the current terms when requesting reports. CFPB report-access guidance.
  2. Identify exactly what is wrong. Check whether the account is yours, whether the balance, status, or payment history is accurate, whether the entry is duplicated or incomplete, and whether it is too old to report. For suspected identity theft, use the separate process below.
  3. Dispute with the reporting company and the furnisher. The furnisher is the business that supplied the information, such as a lender or debt collector. Identify the account and specific field in dispute, explain why it is inaccurate, and include copies of relevant records—not originals. Use the reporting company’s listed dispute address or channel, and contact the furnisher as well. Keep copies of your submission, attachments, and delivery or submission confirmations. CFPB dispute instructions.
  4. Review the investigation result. Disputes are usually handled within 30 days, though some cases take longer. Furnishers generally have a 30-day period to investigate and respond. If an error is found or the information cannot be verified, it should be corrected or removed. A dispute does not guarantee either outcome.

Be specific and provide enough information for the company to investigate. A dispute that is insufficiently specific or considered frivolous may not be investigated; the reporting company must send a notice explaining that decision. CFPB dispute instructions.

What to do if the bureau says the information is accurate

Read the result carefully and compare it with your records. If you have new details or evidence, submit them with a focused follow-up dispute. You can also ask to add a brief statement of dispute to your file so that your position is included with the report.

If you want to complain to the CFPB about inaccurate or incomplete information, first dispute it directly with the company. The CFPB says to wait until the dispute is no longer pending or more than 45 days have passed before submitting that complaint. CFPB complaint process.

What if the entry is from identity theft?

If an account or debt resulted from identity theft, do not treat it as an ordinary billing error or claim identity theft unless that is true. Start at IdentityTheft.gov to begin the federal recovery process and obtain an Identity Theft Report. Use truthful documentation when asking a reporting company to block or correct identity-theft information.

How to spot misleading credit-repair promises

Credit-repair organizations cannot legally remove accurate negative information. The FTC warns consumers to be cautious of companies that demand payment before doing work, tell you not to contact credit reporting companies, urge you to dispute information you know is true, ask you to lie on an application, or encourage a false identity-theft report. The FTC’s January 2026 guidance states: “If there’s accurate negative information in your credit report, credit repair companies can’t remove it for you legally.” FTC guidance on credit-repair scams.

You can obtain reports and dispute errors yourself without paying a credit-repair company. If you need broader help managing debt, nonprofit credit counseling may address budgeting or repayment options, but it does not remove accurate entries.
