To register for GST online in India, start a new application on the official GST Portal, complete Form REG-01 with PAN-matched business details and supporting documents, choose a Primary Authorised Signatory, and finish the verification steps assigned to your application. The most preventable problems are mismatched PAN details, unsuitable or unreadable premises evidence, incomplete tabs, and missed Aadhaar OTP or biometric follow-up.

This guide covers the portal application process for new registrations. It does not determine whether your particular business must register: eligibility depends on the business’s circumstances, supplies, state and applicable rules.

Before you begin: gather details and documents

Prepare the information and records before starting. The GST Portal says, “PAN is mandatory for registration with GST.” Enter the legal name exactly as it appears in the PAN database; a trade name is a separate business detail, not a substitute for the legal name. The purpose of preparing first is practical as well as administrative: the application has several sections, and an unfinished application associated with a TRN and its saved information are purged if not submitted within 15 days.

  • PAN and identity details: Have the applicable PAN and the legal business name as recorded against it. Check the spelling and number against the PAN record rather than copying a familiar trade name or relying on memory.
  • People and contact details: Prepare promoter or partner information and the authorised signatory’s details. Choose one person to be the Primary Authorised Signatory; the portal requires that designation before submission, and only one person can hold the primary designation. Ensure the email and mobile details entered can receive portal communications.
  • Premises evidence: Select documents that reflect the actual arrangement—owned, rented or leased, or used with another person’s consent. Examples listed by the portal include a property tax receipt, municipal khata copy, electricity bill, rent or lease agreement, and consent letter. Supporting ownership evidence may also be needed, particularly for rented premises. Check the live field’s file type and size limits before uploading.
  • Business activity: Identify the goods or services so you can enter the relevant HSN or service classification information. Be ready to describe the business activity in the relevant application fields.
  • Aadhaar access: If OTP authentication is assigned, the relevant person must be able to receive an OTP through a mobile number or email linked to Aadhaar. The contact details entered for the GST application do not have to be the same as the Aadhaar-linked contact.

Also consider who will be available to act on portal messages while the application is being completed. The signatory’s email and mobile details are not merely form entries: the applicant may need to respond to an assigned verification step within a stated window. If the portal directs a person to attend a designated GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK), that person may need to make and keep an appointment.

The official manual groups the same application flow for several applicant categories, including normal taxpayers, composition taxpayers, casual taxable persons, input service distributors, SEZ developers and SEZ units. That list describes categories covered by the portal guidance; it is not proof that an applicant meets the legal conditions for any of them. Confirm the right category and whether registration is required separately, using current official rules for your business’s state, supplies and circumstances.

How to register for GST online

  1. Open the new-registration form. On the official GST Portal, go to Services > Registration > New Registration. Make sure you are starting a new registration application rather than treating a saved draft as a submitted one.
  2. Select the application category and location. Choose the applicable taxpayer type, then select the State/UT and district for which registration is sought. The portal manual groups the application flow for categories including normal taxpayers, composition taxpayers, casual taxable persons, input service distributors, SEZ developers and SEZ units. These categories do not establish that any particular applicant qualifies; check the current rules for your facts.
  3. Complete Part A. Enter the legal name as it appears in the PAN database, the applicable PAN, and the Primary Authorised Signatory’s email and mobile details. Review spelling and numbers before proceeding. The legal name should correspond to the PAN record; do not put the business’s trade name in that field as a replacement.
  4. Proceed to Part B and complete the tabs. The manual lists Business Details, Promoter/Partners, Authorised Signatory, Authorised Representative, Principal Place of Business, Additional Places of Business, Goods and Services, State Specific Information, Aadhaar Authentication and Verification. Complete the sections applicable to your application. Treat the tabs as separate parts of one application: finishing the identity fields does not complete all of REG-01.
  5. Enter the people and authority information. Provide the requested promoter or partner details and authorised signatory details. Designate one Primary Authorised Signatory before submission. If there is an authorised representative section relevant to your case, complete it as requested rather than assuming the representative replaces the primary signatory requirement.
  6. Describe the business and places of operation. Enter the relevant business details and goods or services classification, including applicable HSN or service classification information. Provide principal place of business information and additional places of business where applicable. For premises proof, use records that match the actual ownership, rental/lease or consent arrangement.
  7. Complete state-specific and authentication information. Fill applicable State Specific Information and Aadhaar Authentication sections. The exact verification route depends on the application and the portal’s directions, so read each instruction rather than assuming that every applicant will see the same follow-up.
  8. Upload supporting records and save each section. Match premises documents to the occupancy arrangement and make sure uploads meet the live form’s requirements. Use a readable file, check the correct field, and reopen sections after saving if needed to check for missing information or validation messages.
  9. Review and verify. Check the application for errors, then complete the verification method the portal assigns. Confirm that the required details have been entered in the relevant tabs and that the correct person is selected as Primary Authorised Signatory. Saving a draft is not submission.
  10. Confirm successful submission. Look for the portal’s successful-submission confirmation and resulting acknowledgement or ARN. If the portal directs you to complete additional Aadhaar or in-person verification, follow that instruction and its displayed deadline. Do not assume an ARN exists merely because information was entered or saved.

The GST Portal manual says an unfinished application associated with a TRN and its saved information are purged if they are not submitted within 15 days. Treat the application as time-sensitive: do not begin until you have the required details and can complete the assigned verification promptly. This 15-day period for an unfinished TRN application is distinct from the 15-day validity period the FAQ describes for the relevant Aadhaar authentication link. Check which deadline applies to the action you need to take.

How to avoid common application errors

PAN name or number mismatch

Enter the legal name and PAN exactly as recorded in the PAN database. Do not enter a trade name in place of the legal name. The portal distinguishes these details, and a spelling difference or incorrect PAN can prevent validation. Check the source record rather than relying on a remembered spelling, and carefully review the number before proceeding. If the name in the application does not match the PAN record, correct it at the source of the application data rather than trying to make a trade name fit the legal-name field.

No Primary Authorised Signatory selected

The GST Portal states, “You cannot submit your New Registration Application without selecting a Primary Authorised Signatory.” Only one person can have the primary designation. Confirm that the intended individual is selected and that the person’s contact details are usable for portal correspondence. Do not leave the selection until the last minute: the requirement is a condition of submission, not an optional detail that can be omitted because another person’s information has been entered elsewhere.

Premises documents do not match the actual arrangement

Choose evidence according to whether the premises are owned, rented or leased, or occupied with consent or through shared use. The portal checklist provides examples, but one document type does not fit every arrangement. For rented premises, the portal manual describes a valid rent or lease agreement together with ownership support from the lessor. For other arrangements, use the supporting evidence appropriate to the actual occupancy basis, such as an applicable property tax receipt, municipal khata copy, electricity bill or consent letter.

Before uploading, check that the file is legible, contains the relevant information, and is attached to the matching field. The GST Portal’s live form controls the permitted file format and size for each upload; do not assume that a limit for one field also applies to another. A blank, unclear or incorrectly attached file may trigger a warning or fail validation. Avoid trying to solve a document mismatch by uploading an unrelated record: first identify the real premises arrangement, then provide evidence for it.

Tabs left incomplete or changes not saved

REG-01 has multiple tabs, so completing one section does not mean the application is ready to submit. Save each section, revisit any section showing missing details, and review the complete application before final verification. In particular, do not overlook less obvious sections such as Additional Places of Business, Goods and Services, State Specific Information or Aadhaar Authentication if they apply. A saved draft is not a submitted application and does not produce an ARN. The separate 15-day TRN purge rule also means that leaving the application unfinished for too long is not a reliable way to preserve it.

Aadhaar or biometric follow-up missed

Some applications require Aadhaar OTP authentication; others may be assigned biometric and document verification at a designated GSK. Follow the portal’s message rather than assuming that one route can be substituted for another. The portal FAQ describes a 15-day validity period for the relevant authentication link. In biometric cases, failing to complete required verification in time can mean that no ARN is generated. Check the portal status, note the deadline in the message, and arrange OTP access or an appointment promptly.

Confusing a saved draft, verification and submission

There are several distinct points in the process: entering information, saving a section or draft, completing the assigned verification, and successfully submitting the application. A saved application is not necessarily verified or submitted. After completing the steps, check for the portal’s successful-submission indication and acknowledgement or ARN. If a verification step remains pending, act on it according to the portal directions rather than assuming the application is complete.

Premises evidence: match the document to the arrangement

Premises records are easier to check when you begin with the actual relationship to the property rather than choosing a document at random. The portal materials list examples, but the supporting paperwork differs by occupancy arrangement. Use the category that accurately describes the principal or additional place of business you are entering.

Premises arrangement What to consider Common avoidable problem
Owned premises Use applicable evidence such as a property tax receipt, municipal khata copy or electricity bill, as appropriate to the field and the circumstances. Uploading a record that does not clearly support the location or is unreadable.
Rented or leased premises Use a valid rent or lease agreement; the portal manual describes ownership support from the lessor as well. Providing only an agreement when supporting ownership evidence is needed, or using documents that do not match the rental arrangement.
Premises used with consent or shared use Use the appropriate consent letter and supporting records relevant to the arrangement. Treating consent/shared use as if the premises were owned or rented when the supporting evidence does not reflect that basis.

This comparison is a way to select the right kind of evidence, not an exhaustive legal checklist for every fact pattern. The form’s current field instructions govern accepted formats and file-size limits. If a particular arrangement is not clear from the portal guidance or the available evidence, resolve that question before submitting rather than guessing at a document category.

Aadhaar authentication: OTP versus in-person verification

The verification path depends on the application and the instructions issued by the portal. It is not a freely interchangeable choice in every case. Compare the route the portal assigns, who must complete it, what access or appointment is needed, and the deadline shown in the message.

Route What the applicant may need to do What to check
Aadhaar OTP The person directed by the portal follows the authentication link and validates using an OTP sent through an Aadhaar-linked contact. The GST application’s mobile or email can differ from the contact registered with UIDAI, but the OTP must be reachable through a contact linked to Aadhaar. The portal FAQ says the link is active for 15 days.
Biometric and document verification A relevant promoter, partner or signatory may need to book and attend an appointment at a designated GSK for biometric authentication and document verification. Follow the portal’s assigned instructions and appointment requirements. The portal warns that failure to complete required verification in time can prevent ARN generation.
Other in-person verification when Aadhaar authentication is not opted for The portal FAQ describes photo capture and document verification at a designated GSK. Use the route specified for the application; the exact process depends on the portal instructions.

For OTP authentication, distinguish the contact details supplied in the GST application from the Aadhaar-linked contact used to receive the OTP. The former may be different; what matters for the OTP is that the person can access an Aadhaar-linked contact. If the link needs to be sent again, the portal FAQ gives this route: My Saved Applications > Aadhaar Authentication Status > Resend Verification Link. Check the application’s current status and act within the deadline shown in the portal message.

For an in-person route, read the portal instruction for the person or people who need to attend, the designated GSK and the appointment or document-verification requirement. Do not assume that an OTP link can replace a biometric appointment, or that every applicant can choose the same route. The portal’s instructions for the application determine what needs to happen.

Costs, equipment and optional help

The official workflow reviewed for this guide requires an online application, document uploads and electronic or assigned verification; it does not establish that applicants generally need to buy a new computer, smartphone, scanner, book or DSC token. The reviewed guidance also does not provide a general purchase requirement or a cost figure to quote here. Check the current portal instructions for the actual application rather than purchasing equipment based on an assumption.

GST filing or accounting software may be relevant after registration for ongoing compliance, and a GST practitioner or tax professional may help with complex identity, documentation or authentication cases. Both are optional forms of support in this application guide; neither is presented by the official registration workflow as a requirement to apply. If you engage a provider, verify the provider and any service terms independently.

Check eligibility separately from the application steps

Completing REG-01 online does not establish that a business is legally required to register or that it qualifies for a particular registration category. The applicable rules can depend on the business’s state, supplies and other circumstances. The portal workflow alone does not establish a universal turnover threshold. Do not infer a legal threshold from the online steps or from the fact that the manual covers multiple taxpayer categories.

Before applying, check current official law and guidance for the applicant’s facts, including the relevant business activity, state and category. If the obligation to register or category is unclear, a qualified tax professional may help interpret the facts. That advice is optional and separate from the portal’s procedural requirement to complete the form and assigned verification.

These portal materials were checked on 9 October 2026. Portal labels, upload requirements, authentication handling and legal rules can change, so use the current form and its instructions when applying. The guide does not quote a processing-time estimate or registration success rate because the reviewed official sources do not provide a relevant statistic for this article.

Frequently Asked Questions

What form do I use to register for GST online?

A new registration is filed through Form REG-01 on the official GST Portal. Start at Services > Registration > New Registration, complete the applicable sections, and follow the verification instructions assigned to the application.

Is PAN required, and should I enter my trade name?

The GST Portal says PAN is mandatory for registration. Enter the legal name as it appears in the PAN database; the portal distinguishes the legal name from the trade name, so do not use the trade name as a substitute.

Can I submit the application without a Primary Authorised Signatory?

No. The GST Portal says a new registration application cannot be submitted without selecting a Primary Authorised Signatory, and only one person can hold that primary designation.

What premises proof should I upload?

Use evidence that matches the actual occupancy arrangement. Portal examples include a property tax receipt, municipal khata copy, electricity bill, rent or lease agreement, and consent letter. For rented premises, the manual describes a valid rent or lease agreement together with ownership support from the lessor. Check the live form for the required file type and size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long do I have to complete the application or Aadhaar link?

These are separate deadlines. The GST Portal manual says an unfinished TRN application and its saved information are purged if not submitted within 15 days. The portal FAQ says the relevant Aadhaar authentication link is valid for 15 days. Follow the deadline shown for the specific action in your portal message.

Do I choose between Aadhaar OTP and biometric verification?

Not necessarily. The route depends on the application and portal instructions. OTP cases require access to an Aadhaar-linked contact; assigned biometric cases may require the relevant promoter, partner or signatory to attend a designated GSK for biometric and document verification. If Aadhaar authentication is not opted for, the FAQ describes photo capture and document verification at a designated GSK.

Does saving the form mean I have submitted it?

No. A saved draft is not the same as successful submission and does not by itself produce an ARN. Complete the assigned verification, check for the portal’s successful-submission confirmation, and look for the resulting acknowledgement or ARN.

Is there a universal turnover threshold or required equipment for online registration?

The reviewed portal guidance does not establish a universal turnover threshold; legal eligibility depends on the applicant’s facts and current rules. It also does not establish a general need to buy a new device, scanner, book or DSC token. Check current official instructions and law for your circumstances.

The Bottom Line

Start REG-01 only when you have PAN-matched legal details, the right premises evidence, the people and business information the form requests, and access to the contact routes needed for verification. Complete and save the applicable tabs, select one Primary Authorised Signatory, follow the OTP or in-person route assigned by the portal, and confirm successful submission and an ARN. Check legal eligibility separately; the application workflow is not a substitute for determining whether registration is required.
