How to Reduce Heating and Transport Costs When Oil Prices Rise

Start with heating controls, draught sealing, fewer car trips, and efficient driving. The right steps depend on your home, transport options, and local fuel-price rules.

When oil prices rise, start by using less heat and fuel before committing to equipment or major changes: heat only rooms in use, control heating with a thermostat, seal draughts, and combine or replace suitable car trips. The best mix depends on your home, heating system, travel needs, and local alternatives; none of the available estimates guarantees a particular household’s savings.

Which changes should you try first?

Compare practical steps by upfront cost, reversibility, compatibility with your home or vehicle, and whether local transport alternatives are usable for your schedule, mobility, and safety. Start with habits and adjustments you can readily change; consider equipment only if it suits your system. The evidence does not establish one savings ranking that applies to every household.

  • Low-cost and reversible: adjust heating controls, close off unused rooms, seal draughts, combine journeys, and change suitable trips to walking, cycling, public transport, or car-sharing.
  • System-dependent: a thermostatic radiator valve may help manage heat room by room, but only if your radiator and heating system are compatible.
  • Location-dependent: fuel prices, tariff protections, public transport, and consumer support vary by jurisdiction. Check local rules and current costs before making a larger decision.

How can you reduce heating costs?

Heat the rooms you use and control the temperature

Use your thermostat to manage heating rather than heating the whole home continuously, and avoid heating rooms that are not in use where your system allows it. Australian Government household guidance suggests a winter thermostat setting of 18–20°C in its Australian context. That is not a universal prescription: adapt settings to local health and comfort advice, climate, and the needs of people in the home. The government’s bill-reduction guidance identifies heating and cooling as often the largest household energy use.

Block draughts before investing in equipment

Check for gaps around doors and windows. Seals can reduce draughts; the US Department of Energy also recommends caulking gaps, weatherstripping movable window parts, and using window attachments. Its winter energy-bill tips advise weatherizing windows and heating only when people are present. Choose measures that fit the window or door and do not interfere with safe ventilation or operation.

Check radiator compatibility before adding a thermostatic valve

A thermostatic radiator valve can help regulate heat at an individual radiator, but it is an option only for compatible radiator and heating systems. Germany’s Federal Environment Agency says timer-controlled valves may save heating costs, particularly in poorly insulated homes; that is a conditional finding, not a promised result for a particular property. The agency also estimates that turning heating down by one degree can lower heating costs by around 6%. Treat this as the agency’s estimate, not a guaranteed household saving: results depend on the building, system, and usage. See its five-step energy-saving advice.

Know whether your heating fuel has a price cap

In Great Britain, Ofgem says heating oil and LPG are not covered by the energy price cap. Their prices are set by fuel markets and can change quickly; location, season, and delivery timing also affect what customers pay. This rule is specific to Great Britain and should not be applied elsewhere. Ofgem’s price-cap guidance explains the distinction.

How can you cut transport fuel use?

Replace or combine journeys where it is practical

For suitable trips, walk or cycle instead of driving. Combine errands so they require fewer separate journeys, or consider public transport or car-sharing when routes, timetables, accessibility, and safety work for you. Working from home can remove a commute when your job and employer allow it. These are options, not assumptions: many people cannot change their work location or travel mode.

The International Energy Agency’s 20 March 2026 guidance identifies working from home where possible, public transport, car-sharing, and efficient driving as ways to reduce transport fuel use. It says shifting to public transport could reduce national oil use for cars by 1% to 3%, depending on infrastructure. That is a country-level potential estimate, not a forecast of an individual household’s savings. The IEA notes that road transport accounts for around 45% of global oil demand. Read its consumer options for easing oil-price pressures.

Drive smoothly and avoid carrying unnecessary weight

Anticipatory, defensive driving and avoiding unnecessary loads can reduce avoidable fuel use. Germany’s Federal Environment Agency also advises checking tyre pressure and using air conditioning only when needed. These measures are most relevant if you have to drive; the effect varies with vehicle, journey, and conditions. For commercial vehicles, the IEA separately identifies maintenance and load optimization, which should not be confused with a household-car savings estimate.

How to choose a realistic plan

  1. Identify where your oil exposure is. Is it home heating fuel, petrol or diesel for driving, or both? Separate those costs in your budget so you can target the relevant use.
  2. Try changes that require little commitment. Adjust heating schedules and room use, seal obvious draughts, combine errands, and consider alternatives for journeys that are safe and feasible to change.
  3. Check compatibility before spending. Confirm that heating controls fit your system; assess whether public transport, cycling, car-sharing, or remote work actually fit your circumstances.
  4. Check local prices and protections. Fuel-market exposure and tariff rules depend on where you live. Compare current local costs and confirm any protections with the relevant authority or supplier.
  5. Review results against your own bills and routine. Keep track of changes in energy use and travel spending, allowing for weather, season, and changes in how much you travel. Do not assume an estimate from another country or household will match your result.

Germany’s Federal Environment Agency estimates average savings of more than €500 per person per year across five assessed energy-saving measures. It also gives up to €100 per year as an example for replacing a shopping trip by car with a bicycle. These are agency figures from German consumer guidance, not guaranteed outcomes, and the broader five-measure total is not a personal forecast or a figure solely for heating and transport. The agency’s May 2026 release describes the estimates and their context.
