The reliable way to cut food-delivery spending is to compare the final checkout total for the same basket, then decide whether pickup, a subscription, or a less frequent planned order lowers that total for your habits. A $0 delivery line does not guarantee a cheap order: item-price differences, service, distance, weather, taxes, tip, minimum subtotals, and the membership fee can outweigh it.
Use your own account prices and eligible restaurants. Membership terms and displayed fees change by market and over time, so calculate a break-even point from the orders you would place anyway rather than ordering extra food to “use” a benefit.

- Pickup ordered in an app.
- Direct ordering from the restaurant, if available.
Write down the final amount shown before payment. Include menu prices, delivery, service, distance or weather charges, taxes, tip, credits, and any subscription charge allocated to that order. Then include the time and travel cost of pickup. This produces a personal answer instead of relying on a platform’s advertised “savings.”

The Federal Trade Commission’s 2026 notice cites a study estimate that platform delivery cost nearly 80% more on average than direct pickup of the same order. The notice also cites estimates ranging from 25% to more than 90% in other studies. Those are study estimates in different settings, not a universal price rule or an FTC finding about every order. Your checkout screen is the decisive evidence.
What can remain in a “free-delivery” order
Delivery subscriptions generally remove or reduce only specified charges on qualifying orders. The rest of the checkout can still determine whether delivery beats pickup.
Item-price differences
A restaurant may display different prices in an app and on its own ordering page. Compare the subtotal for identical items, sizes, modifiers, and quantities. A lower delivery fee can be offset before fees are even added if the app menu is more expensive.

Service fees may remain, or may be reduced rather than eliminated. The amount can depend on the platform, restaurant, order size, and membership eligibility.
Distance and weather charges
Grubhub’s membership terms state that additional service, long-distance, and inclement-weather fees may apply and vary by order. DoorDash likewise says delivery charges vary with factors including distance and order size. A “$0 delivery” label does not remove every location-related charge.
Taxes and tip
Taxes are part of the final amount and can differ when the taxable subtotal differs. A tip is a separate choice but belongs in your comparison if you would normally leave one. Use the same tip policy for each version of the basket so the comparison is consistent.

Minimum subtotals and exclusions
Benefits can require a displayed minimum subtotal, a participating merchant, a particular order type, or a standard delivery category. An order below the threshold may receive no benefit or may incur a small-order charge. Read the eligibility text beside the fee rather than assuming every restaurant and basket qualifies.
How to compare the same basket step by step
- Choose a real meal. Use an order you expect to place, not an unusually large basket created to reach a threshold.
- Freeze the basket. Keep the restaurant, items, sizes, modifiers, quantities, and requested time identical across comparisons.
- Check direct ordering. If the restaurant accepts web, phone, or in-person orders, record its menu subtotal and all charges before payment.
- Check app delivery. Record the item subtotal, delivery fee, service fee, distance or weather fee, small-order or other charges, tax, tip, credits, and final total.
- Check app pickup. Use the same basket and record pickup fees, credits, taxes, tip, and final total. Some regions show pickup with zero platform fees, but availability is location-specific.
- Note eligibility. Record the minimum subtotal, participating-merchant requirement, and any order-type restriction attached to the benefit.
- Add pickup costs. Estimate fuel, transit, parking, and the value of your travel time. If you were already going past the restaurant, the incremental cost may be close to zero; a special trip is different.
- Save the result. Keep a simple note or spreadsheet with the date and displayed totals. Recheck when your location, restaurant, order frequency, or account pricing changes.

Does pickup cost less than delivery?
Often, but not automatically. Pickup can remove a delivery fee and may avoid some delivery-related charges, while app pickup may still have service fees or different menu prices. Direct restaurant pickup can have a different total again.
When pickup is usually strongest
- The restaurant is already on your route or close enough that travel adds little cost.
- The pickup subtotal is the same as, or lower than, the delivery subtotal.
- The delivery order has a distance, weather, or high service charge.
- You can combine pickup with an existing errand without adding meaningful time.
When delivery can be rational
- A special trip would require paid parking, transit, fuel, or substantial time.
- You are ill, caring for someone, working, or otherwise unable to travel.
- A qualifying membership removes enough fees to beat your pickup alternative.
- The restaurant offers a direct-delivery price or promotion that is lower than pickup after all costs.
Value your time consistently. You do not need to assign a wage to every minute, but you should not call pickup “free” if it requires a separate trip you would otherwise avoid.
Is a delivery subscription worth it for me?
Treat a membership as a break-even calculation, not a discount identity. The basic equation is:
Net monthly benefit = savings and credits from qualifying orders − membership price.

Count only orders you would place without the membership, and only the portion of each order that the plan actually covers. Do not count an advertised estimated-savings number as cash you will necessarily receive.

Break-even formula
For a simple case, divide the recurring fee by your average per-order benefit:
Break-even orders = monthly membership price ÷ average qualifying savings per order.
For example, if a plan costs $9.99 per month and your qualifying orders save an average of $3.50 each, $9.99 ÷ $3.50 = 2.85. You would need three qualifying orders in that month to exceed the fee. This is an illustration; replace both figures with the amounts shown in your account.
Use a conservative benefit estimate
For each likely order, calculate the difference between the member and non-member checkout totals. Exclude savings that depend on ordering more often, choosing a more expensive restaurant, or reaching a minimum by adding food you do not need. If a credit expires or can be redeemed only on certain orders, count it only when you realistically will use it.
Current membership terms to verify before joining
Prices and eligibility are volatile. The following terms were listed on the providers’ pages accessed in 2026; check your own app for the offer, trial, renewal date, minimum subtotal, and participating merchants before subscribing.

A trial can make the first month look unusually favorable. Include the post-trial renewal price in your decision, and set a reminder before renewal if your order pattern is uncertain.

How pickup credits and rewards change the math
A pickup reward is valuable only if you would make eligible pickup orders and can redeem the credit before it expires. A 5% credit, for example, is not equivalent to 5% cash back on every restaurant purchase: eligibility, redemption timing, and expiration can restrict its use.

- Check whether the restaurant, subtotal, items, and payment method qualify.
- Check when the credit posts and when it expires.
- Subtract only the credit you expect to redeem from the order’s effective cost.
If pickup is cheaper before the credit, the credit strengthens that option. If pickup requires an expensive special trip, the reward may not overcome the travel cost.

Set a realistic ordering cadence
Review the last two or three months of transactions and count orders you would have made without promotions. Separate restaurant delivery, restaurant pickup, and grocery or other purchases. A subscription that needs three qualifying orders per month is a poor fit if your normal pattern is one order.
Choose a default comparison routine
Before pressing checkout, open the direct restaurant option and one pickup option when practical. If delivery is still preferable after all charges and travel costs, place it confidently. Routine comparisons take less time than trying to reconstruct a month of fees later.
Combine orders only when the food and budget support it
Combining a household’s orders can help meet a minimum subtotal or avoid a second fee, but it can also encourage extra sides, drinks, or impulse items. Combine only food you already intend to buy, and consider whether different preparation times will reduce quality.

Schedule around predictable needs
Planning a delivery for a known late workday can prevent a higher-cost, rushed order. Keep a short list of restaurants whose direct, pickup, and app prices you have already compared. Planning is a spending control, not a reason to increase order frequency.

Do not chase thresholds
If adding a $6 item saves a $3 fee, you have not saved $3 unless you wanted the item. Compare the incremental food cost with the fee avoided and the value of leftovers. A threshold is useful only when the larger basket fits your planned meal and budget.
Three practical scenarios
One occasional order
You order once a month, live near the restaurant, and pickup is $8 less than delivery after all charges. A $9.99 monthly membership cannot recover its fee from that single order, even if delivery is labeled free. Pickup or direct ordering is the stronger starting point.
Several qualifying deliveries
You normally place four orders a month at participating restaurants, each above the displayed minimum. If the member checkout is $3 to $4 lower each time, total expected savings may exceed a $9.99 fee. Verify that distance, weather, service, and other remaining charges do not reduce the actual benefit on some orders.
High-fee, low-frequency orders
You order only twice monthly, but both restaurants are far away and delivery charges are unusually high. Compare the two non-member totals with the member totals, then compare pickup travel costs. A membership could break even with fewer orders if each qualifying order saves more, but only your displayed checkout amounts establish that result.
Common mistakes that erase savings
- Comparing different baskets. A discount on a smaller meal is not proof that the platform is cheaper.
- Counting the delivery line only. Service, distance, weather, item-price, tax, tip, and membership costs remain relevant.
- Using a published average as a forecast. The FTC-cited estimates describe broad studies with different methods and contexts.
- Ignoring merchant participation. A membership may work at one restaurant and not another.
- Forgetting the minimum subtotal. A benefit may disappear when your order falls below the displayed threshold.
- Ordering to justify the subscription. A fee is not recovered if it causes additional meals or add-ons.
- Missing renewal or cancellation timing. Record the post-trial price and the date by which cancellation must occur under your plan terms.
- Treating credits as cash. Expiration and redemption rules can make a nominal reward unusable.
- Calling pickup free. Include incremental travel, parking, transit, and time in your own comparison.
A monthly five-minute audit
- Export or review your delivery and pickup transactions.
- Mark each order as qualifying or non-qualifying for your membership.
- Add the actual fee avoided, service-fee reduction, and credits redeemed on qualifying orders.
- Subtract the membership price charged that month.
- Compare the resulting net benefit with your cheapest realistic pickup or direct-order alternatives.
- Cancel, keep, or reassess the membership based on the next month’s expected pattern, not on sunk fees.
Re-run the audit after moving, changing restaurants, changing work schedules, losing a trial offer, or seeing a new minimum subtotal. Platform pricing is account- and market-dependent, so an old calculation can become wrong without any change in your budget.
