Act quickly after a pig-butchering crypto scam: stop engaging, ask payment providers about available options, preserve records, and report the fraud. No recovery route guarantees a refund.

If you have been caught in a pig-butchering crypto scam, stop sending money and contact every bank, exchange, card issuer, wire service, or payment app involved as soon as possible. Ask whether the payment can be stopped, recalled, reversed, or disputed. Also save your evidence and report the fraud to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). A return of funds is not guaranteed: a provider may be able to act on a recent payment, while cryptocurrency tracing, freezes, seizures, and court-supervised distributions are separate processes.

What “recovering your money” can mean

A pig-butchering scam typically starts with an unsolicited message or online relationship, builds trust, and then steers you to a fake crypto investment site or app. Profits shown on the platform may be fabricated. When you try to withdraw, the scammers may demand additional money for supposed taxes, verification, liquidity, or release fees. Do not pay them. The FBI advises people to report suspected schemes to IC3, and Investor.gov advises people who suspect a relationship investment scam to stop communicating and send no more money.

“Recovery” can refer to several different actions. A payment provider may try to stop or reverse a payment; an exchange may freeze an account under its own procedures or legal process; law enforcement may trace or seize assets; and a court may later supervise forfeiture and distribution. These are not interchangeable, and none guarantees that a particular victim will receive funds. The FBI states that private recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders.

What to do immediately after a crypto scam

  1. Stop paying and stop engaging. Do not send another tax payment, withdrawal charge, verification deposit, liquidity fee, or release fee. Save messages and other evidence first, then block the contact. Do not follow further instructions from the fake platform. The FBI’s recovery-scam warning and Investor.gov guidance both urge caution about continued contact and payments.
  2. Contact each payment provider promptly. Use a phone number or app you know is official. Tell the provider the payment was connected to fraud, and ask whether it can be stopped, recalled, reversed, or disputed. Contact the company or platform you used to send cryptocurrency as well. The FTC says the available options depend on how you paid; asking is worthwhile, but a blockchain transfer should not be assumed reversible. See the FTC’s payment guidance.
  3. Secure accounts if credentials or personal data were exposed. Change passwords that were reused, secure your email and financial accounts, and contact account providers through known official channels. If money or crypto remains in a legitimate account, protect it from further access.
  4. Preserve evidence before deleting accounts or messages. Save chat histories, phone numbers, email addresses, profile names, fake platform URLs and app names, screenshots of displayed balances and withdrawal demands, receipts, bank records, exchange statements, wallet addresses, transaction hashes, dates, amounts, and receiving-institution names. DOJ guidance asks people reporting these schemes to include platform names and addresses, transaction hashes, bank details, suspected scammer contacts, and copies of communications and transaction records.
  5. Report through official channels. In the United States, submit an investment-scam report to FBI IC3 and include the evidence you preserved. The FBI also provides cryptocurrency guidance. Report a recovery scam to IC3 and the FTC. Depending on the facts, you may also notify a state securities regulator or the SEC if the conduct involves securities; not every crypto fraud falls within SEC jurisdiction.

Reporting systems and legal remedies differ by country. If you are outside the United States, use the relevant national fraud-reporting and financial-regulatory channels.

What recovery routes may be available

Payment or asset route Who may act Possible action What to know
Bank, card, wire service, or payment app The company or financial institution that sent or processed the payment It may be able to stop, recall, reverse, refund, or dispute a payment, depending on the method and circumstances. Contact it promptly and ask; the FTC does not promise that a payment can be recovered.
On-chain cryptocurrency transfer The platform or company used to send the crypto; potentially an exchange or law-enforcement agency if assets can be identified The sending company can say whether it has any option to act. Investigators may trace funds, and an exchange may freeze an account under internal procedures or legal process. Do not assume a completed blockchain transfer can be reversed. A freeze or investigation does not itself mean you will receive money.
Seized assets Law enforcement and, where applicable, a court Authorities may seek seizure or civil forfeiture; a later court-supervised process may address distribution. This is distinct from a direct refund. An enforcement action does not guarantee an individual claimant a payment.

Results depend on factors such as payment method, timing, whether funds remain with an intermediary, transaction records, jurisdiction, and investigative or court action. The available official sources do not establish a universal success rate or recovery timeline.

Can crypto transactions be reversed?

Do not count on a blockchain transfer being reversible. Still, contact the platform or company you used to send the crypto and ask whether it can do anything. If the funds reached an exchange or another identifiable intermediary, that information may be useful to investigators, but a potential freeze is not the same as a refund. The FTC’s guidance recommends contacting the sending company or bank quickly and asking what options exist.

Can authorities trace and seize crypto?

Yes, official cases show that tracing and seizure can happen, but they do not establish a standard outcome for other victims. In a Massachusetts case, DOJ reported that a victim wired over $400,000; some funds were traced through wallets and exchange accounts, and cryptocurrency was seized in January 2024. In a separate July 2024 civil action, DOJ sought forfeiture of 2,546,415.01 USDT. These are enforcement examples, not typical loss or recovery figures, and neither promises that a particular victim will receive money.

How to recognize a crypto recovery scam

Scammers may target people who have already lost money by contacting them directly, advertising in scam-related comment sections or search results, charging an upfront fee, and then disappearing or demanding more money. Some falsely claim law-enforcement or legal affiliations. The FBI warns: “Private sector recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency.” Exchanges may freeze accounts through their own procedures or legal process; a private firm cannot order them to release assets.

  • Be wary of anyone who guarantees a refund or claims special power to retrieve crypto.
  • Do not pay upfront for refund help or give personal or financial information to someone promising recovery.
  • Government agencies do not charge victims to investigate crimes or guarantee refunds.
  • Save the recovery offer, messages, and payment requests; report the offer to IC3 and the FTC, and do not send additional funds.

A qualified attorney may explain civil options that apply in a particular jurisdiction. However, an attorney, investigator, tracing provider, or recovery agent cannot be assumed to have authority to compel an exchange to release assets or guarantee that funds will be returned. A legal consultation is not a substitute for reporting the fraud and contacting the payment provider.
