Use TallyPrime’s GSTR-2B Reconciliation report to compare supplier transactions in GSTR-2B with purchase transactions in your books, then investigate the exceptions before preparing GST returns. You can download GSTR-2B through TallyPrime or import a portal file in Excel or JSON format. A technical match is not, by itself, confirmation that input tax credit (ITC) is legally claimable.
The current TallyHelp workflow is documented for TallyPrime Release 5.0, while Tally’s product page advertises Release 7.1. Menu names and shortcuts can differ by installed release; if a path below is unavailable, look for the equivalent GST Returns or reconciliation option in your version. Tally’s GSTR-2B reconciliation guide and its TallyPrime product page provide the version context.
What GSTR-2B reconciliation checks
Reconciliation compares supplier transactions reported in GSTR-2B with purchase invoices and related vouchers recorded in TallyPrime. Matching can depend on supplier GSTIN, document number and date, taxable value, tax amounts, document type or section, and return period. Tally describes GSTR-2B as a static statement for a return period, unlike the continuously updated GSTR-2A. If a supplier files or corrects information later, do not assume an earlier comparison has updated automatically; obtain or recompute the relevant data and review it again.
A reconciled status only says that the records match under the report’s matching rules. ITC eligibility still needs separate review for matters such as blocked credits, business use, time limits, payment conditions, place of supply, reversals and other applicable GST requirements. The reconciliation report is an accounting and exception-management aid, not a legal decision on a credit claim.

Prepare TallyPrime and your data
- Back up the company data before changing vouchers, masters or reconciliation statuses.
- Confirm GST is enabled and the correct company GST registration is configured.
- Check that purchase vouchers carry the right supplier GSTIN, invoice number and date, taxable value, applicable CGST/SGST/IGST and cess, place of supply, and other relevant GST details.
- Use a GSTR-2B file for the same GSTIN and return period as the books you intend to compare. Keep invoice date, book-entry date, GST return effective date, supplier reporting period and statement period distinct.
- For a direct TallyPrime download, have the GST portal credentials and access to the registered mobile number available for OTP authentication. Tally’s documented connected workflow says its authenticated session is valid for six hours; this is a Tally workflow detail, not a guarantee about every GST portal session.
- For manual import, save the portal’s supported GSTR-2B Excel or JSON file locally.
Download GSTR-2B directly into TallyPrime
- Open the company and confirm the GST registration you need.
- Press Alt+Z, then select All GST Options → Download GST Returns. Tally documents the shorter Alt+Z → Download GST Returns path for Release 4.1 or earlier.
- Press C: Configure, set Return Type to GSTR-2B, and choose the required Return Period.
- Press D: Download. Enter GST credentials and the OTP if prompted, then wait for TallyPrime’s confirmation.
- Open the report with Alt+G → GSTR-2B Reconciliation.
Tally says a later download replaces the existing version. Preserve the original portal file or an exported report before downloading again if you need to retain the earlier data for review or audit support. The direct-download path and replacement behavior are documented in Tally’s reconciliation guide.
Import a GSTR-2B file manually
- Download the correct period’s GSTR-2B file from the GST portal in a supported Excel or JSON format.
- In TallyPrime, press Alt+O and select GST Returns.
- Choose the correct GST Registration. In a company with multiple registrations, verify the GSTIN against the file before proceeding.
- Set Return Type to GSTR-2B, then select the file path and file.
- Press Ctrl+A to accept the import.
- Review the import summary: transactions processed, imported and failed. Investigate failed transactions; do not treat a partial import as a complete comparison.
- Open Alt+G → GSTR-2B Reconciliation.
The import path and summary fields follow Tally’s documented GSTR-2B workflow. A wrong GST registration can make a sound set of books appear to contain widespread missing or portal-only invoices.
Read the reconciliation report
The report groups transactions by their relationship between books and portal data. Use the categories as investigation queues, not automatic instructions to alter books or claim credit.
| Status | What it indicates | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Reconciled | Tally considers the book and portal transactions matched under the current matching configuration. | Retain supporting records; review ITC eligibility separately. |
| Mismatched | Transactions appear on both sides, but one or more details or values differ. | Compare document identity, dates, GSTIN, taxable value and tax amounts. |
| Available Only in Books | A purchase transaction is recorded in TallyPrime but is absent from this GSTR-2B data. | Check filing status, period, amendments and supplier details; track follow-up. |
| Available Only on Portal | A transaction appears in GSTR-2B but no corresponding book transaction has been found. | Verify that it belongs to the entity and registration before booking or excluding it. |
| Mismatch in Return Period | The transaction is present but associated with different periods in books and portal data. | Compare the GST return effective date and supplier reporting period with the invoice and book dates. |
| Excluded, but Available on Portal | A portal transaction has been intentionally excluded from reconciliation. | Check the reason and supporting evidence; restore it if the exclusion was mistaken. |
| Uncertain Transactions | Tally has identified transactions needing correction or human judgment. | Drill down and investigate rather than assuming they are matches. |
| Invoices Rejected in IMS | The report identifies invoices affected by Invoice Management System actions, where applicable. | Review the IMS status and relevant records before refreshing the data. |
The report’s Return View maps transactions to the sections or tables represented in GSTR-2B. Useful controls in the documented TallyPrime workflow include:

Investigate and resolve each exception
Value or detail mismatch
Open Mismatched, drill down to the supplier or transaction, and compare book and portal values. Use Ctrl+B to display differences. Check taxable value, tax amounts, rounding, GSTIN, invoice number and date, document type or section, amendments, credit/debit notes, duplicate vouchers and the return period.
- Decide whether the difference is a book-entry error, supplier-side error, rounding difference, or timing/period issue.
- Correct the voucher or supplier master only when the source document supports the correction.
- Refresh or rerun reconciliation and confirm the transaction’s new status.
For a minor rounding difference, Tally documents setting the GST status to reconciled with Alt+S → Set GST Status → Reconciled. Use that treatment only when the difference is genuinely immaterial under your review policy; do not clear a material discrepancy merely to reduce the exception count. Tally’s status guidance is also described at Tally GST status and GSTR-2B reconciliation.
Mismatch in return period
This status means the records exist but fall into different GST return periods. Invoice date, book-entry date, supplier filing period and GST return effective date are not interchangeable. Tally’s documented correction is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Mismatch in Return Period and drill down to the transaction.
- Select the voucher and press Alt+L: Set Effective Date.
- Set the GST Return Effective Date to the period supported by the supplier’s reporting and your tax review.
- Save, then verify whether Tally moves the transaction to the reconciled section.
Changing an effective date changes GST reporting treatment. It is not a general fix for an incorrect invoice date or a way to bypass review.
Available only on the portal
First determine whether the portal transaction is genuinely for this business and GSTIN. It might be an unposted invoice, a differently numbered invoice, a voucher under another supplier ledger, a credit/debit note or amendment, a duplicate, or a supplier’s GSTIN error.
Rank #3
- Open Available Only on Portal and press Alt+R: GST Portal View to inspect the supplier and invoice details.
- Search TallyPrime for the invoice and related documents, including entries under other supplier ledgers.
- If the invoice is genuine and missing from the books, record the purchase entry using its source document, then reconcile again.
- If it is not relevant, investigate and exclude it rather than booking it automatically. Tally documents Alt+S → Set GST Status → Excluded for a supplier error such as a wrongly entered recipient GSTIN. To restore an excluded item, set its status back to System Inferred.
Available only in books
A books-only invoice can reflect supplier filing delay, incorrect supplier data, a period difference, an amendment or another timing issue. Verify the supplier GSTIN and invoice number, check whether the supplier filed the relevant return, and look for amendments and credit/debit notes. Contact the supplier when the invoice is absent from the portal, and keep an exception tracker instead of deleting or blindly changing the voucher. Recheck the relevant GSTR-2B after the supplier files or corrects the information. Absence from the current statement alone does not establish that ITC is permanently unavailable; period-specific rules and correction history need tax review.
Potential match: section or document type
Tally may identify a potential match when major values such as taxable amount and tax amount agree but a detail differs—for example, a book entry recorded as B2B that appears as CDNR on the portal. Confirm the underlying document before changing the voucher:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the relevant potential-match category and select the transaction.
- Press Alt+F10: Other Vouchers and select the correct voucher type, such as Credit Note.
- Enable Provide GST Details; enter the reason for issuing the note, supplier debit/credit note number and date.
- Save with Ctrl+A, then review the reconciliation result.
Potential match: GSTIN
For Potential Matches — excluding Party GSTIN/UIN, press Ctrl+Enter on the party name, open the party master, correct the GSTIN/UIN if the supplier invoice and official records confirm the change, then save. Do not change a GSTIN simply because it makes a transaction match.
Potential match: invoice number or date
Prefix or suffix differences, spaces, slashes, hyphens, leading zeroes and typographical errors can prevent a match. In Potential Matches — excluding Doc No., select the transaction and press Alt+W: Copy Doc No. & Date. You can select multiple transactions with the spacebar and press Enter to confirm. Bulk-copy only after verifying each portal record belongs to the same invoice; a matching number alone does not establish identity.
IMS-rejected invoices and other status changes
Review the invoice’s IMS action and source records before deciding what to do. Tally identifies invoices rejected in IMS as a report category and lists IMS actions among reasons recomputation may be needed; the status itself should not be treated as a complete legal conclusion about ITC. Keep the action and its supporting review in your exception records.

Configure matching without hiding material errors
Tally’s reconciliation configuration can account for differences in taxable amount, round-off values, TDS/TCS amounts and books-versus-portal values. The documented setup points are F11 for company GST details and F12: Configure within the reconciliation report. Tally also describes configuring reconciliation based on tax amount where taxable values differ in its GST company setup guidance.
Matching tolerances can reduce manual work, but broad tolerances may turn meaningful differences into apparent matches. Document the threshold and rationale you use, and require human review for material or unusual differences. Automatic matching depends on sound master data, correct transaction classification and suitable settings; it does not replace supplier follow-up or tax review.
When to recompute GSTR-2B
Tally says recomputation may be needed after changes that affect ITC availability or the return data, including invoices marked rejected or pending in IMS, ITC reversals, purchase-invoice changes, GST effective-date changes, or errors during GSTR-3B upload.
- Press Alt+Z and select All GST Options → Recompute GSTR-2B.
- Select the GST registration. Press C: Configure if you need to change the return period.
- Press R: Recompute.
- Check the Online GST Activity Tracker for the activity status.
- After recomputation completes, download GSTR-2B again and review reconciliation.
Recomputation may take time during GST portal server issues or high traffic. Check the activity tracker before concluding that the request failed. The path and stated triggers are from Tally’s reconciliation documentation.
Export the report and keep a review trail
For TallyPrime Release 5.0 and later, Tally documents exporting the GSTR-2B report to Excel in the older GSTR-2 format:
Best Value
- Press Alt+E and select Current.
- Press F8: File Format and choose Excel (Spreadsheet).
- Set As per old format (GSTR-2) to Yes, then complete the export.
An exported report is not the original GST portal file. For an auditable month-end record, retain the source portal file, import summary, exported reconciliation report, supplier follow-up log, voucher correction history and final review sign-off. This is especially important before a replacement download, which Tally says supersedes the earlier downloaded version.
Troubleshoot common reconciliation problems
- Many transactions appear missing or portal-only: verify the selected company and GST registration first; then confirm the portal file period matches the books.
- The period looks wrong: distinguish invoice date, book-entry date, GST return effective date, supplier reporting period and GSTR-2B statement period before changing a voucher.
- Import reports failures: record processed, imported and failed counts, investigate the failures, and preserve the source file before relying on the result.
- GST portal login or OTP does not complete: confirm the credentials and access to the registered mobile number, then check Tally’s activity or confirmation status before retrying.
- Recompute appears stalled: check the Online GST Activity Tracker; portal traffic or server issues can delay completion.
- A repeat download changes the data: retain prior source and export files first if an audit trail is required.
- A shortcut or menu is missing: Tally’s reconciliation guide is for Release 5.0, while the product page advertises Release 7.1; consult the equivalent GST workflow for your installed release.
Choose an independent or alternative workflow only if needed
If you want a second comparison without relying solely on TallyPrime’s report, GSTN provides a matching utility that compares GSTR-2B with a purchase register and presents exact, partial, probable and mismatch results, including documents present only on one side. See the GSTN matching utility guide. It is useful as an independent comparison, but it is not an integrated Tally voucher-correction or supplier-follow-up workflow.
A spreadsheet may suit a low-volume register if you standardise GSTIN, invoice number and date, taxable value, tax components, return period, status, follow-up owner and resolution date. It becomes more fragile with amendments, credit/debit notes, multiple GSTINs, repeated invoice numbers or high transaction volumes.
Dedicated platforms such as ITC360 say they can import purchase registers from accounting systems and compare them with GSTR-2B; those are vendor claims to evaluate against your data and review needs. See ITC360’s product information. Zoho Books offers GST accounting and reconciliation as a cloud accounting platform, but it is a broader alternative rather than a simple TallyPrime add-on; assess migration, inventory, offline needs and staff workflows before considering a switch. See Zoho Books GST accounting and its India product page. Buying or switching software does not resolve compliance automatically; accurate source data, documented exceptions and appropriate tax review remain necessary.
