How to Recognize and Avoid Scams Involving Peer-to-Peer Stablecoin Payments

Stablecoin payment scams often rely on trust, fear, or urgency to push victims toward an unfamiliar wallet or platform. Learn the warning signs, how to check a request independently, and what to do after sending funds.

Most peer-to-peer stablecoin scams begin with a person persuading you to send money—not with a flaw in the stablecoin. A new romantic contact, investment promoter, or apparent official may build trust or create fear, then steer you to a wallet address or unfamiliar platform. Pause, verify the request through a channel you find independently, and do not send funds under pressure. If you have already paid, contact the service you used and report the suspected fraud promptly; recovery is not guaranteed.

How these scams work

Stablecoins are crypto assets designed to maintain a relatively stable value, but a payment made with them can still be used to defraud you. The danger in the scenarios below is often the request, the person behind it, and the destination—not a technical failure of the stablecoin.

Romance and investment scams

A fraudster may contact you through a wrong-number text, dating app, or social media and spend weeks building a relationship. They may then claim to have made money trading and offer to show you how. The pitch can lead to a small initial deposit in bitcoin or stablecoins on an unfamiliar trading platform, followed by a screen displaying apparent gains. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes cases in which a small withdrawal is allowed to build confidence before the person is urged to deposit more. Later, a larger withdrawal may be blocked, delayed with claims of technical problems, or made conditional on paying extra fees or taxes.

A displayed balance, apparent profit, or successful small withdrawal is not proof that a platform is legitimate. The CFTC warns that registration alone does not protect against fraud. Its guidance recommends researching people and firms, using reverse-image search, keeping the conversation on the platform where it began, and asking someone trusted for a second opinion. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises against sending money or gifts to a romantic contact you have not met in person. The CFTC also advises avoiding offers to trade digital assets from people met through dating apps or social media, even when the relationship has lasted weeks or months: CFTC advisory on relationship investment scams.

Impersonation and urgent payment demands

Someone may claim to represent your bank, brokerage, a government agency, a utility, or a technology-support company. They may say your money is at risk and insist that you move it immediately to a wallet, unfamiliar app, crypto kiosk, or other route they specify. They may coach you through the transaction, demand secrecy, or create a deadline so you do not have time to check their story. These are warning signs, not proof that the person is who they claim to be. End the interaction and call the organization using a number or website you obtain independently, not contact details the requester supplied. See the CFTC’s warning signs for crypto-related scams.

An ordinary payment request does not require your seed phrase or private keys. Do not share them with someone claiming to help, protect funds, or process a payment; the FTC explains how to recognize and avoid cryptocurrency scams.

Warning signs to check before sending

  • Urgency or fear: You are told to act immediately to protect money, avoid arrest, or prevent an account from being closed.
  • Secrecy or coaching: The person tells you not to consult anyone, or stays on the line and directs each step of the transfer.
  • Guaranteed returns or pressure to add money: A stranger promises easy profits, celebrates apparent gains, or urges you to increase your deposit.
  • An unfamiliar destination: You are told to use a wallet address, QR code, platform, app, or kiosk you did not independently select and do not understand.
  • New fees to withdraw: A platform says you must pay extra taxes or charges out of pocket before you can access your balance.
  • Identity you cannot verify independently: The person or organization cannot be confirmed through a known official website or phone number.

A wallet address or QR code provided by someone else deserves particular caution. CFTC guidance warns that a transfer to an address cannot be reversed; this is not a guarantee about every stablecoin, wallet, or service’s rules, but it is a reason to verify the recipient and destination before authorizing a payment. The CFTC’s crypto scam guidance also cautions consumers about urgent requests and pressure to move money.

How to verify a request before paying

  1. Stop the conversation long enough to think. Do not act while someone is creating urgency, demanding secrecy, or pressuring you to skip a second opinion.
  2. Verify the person or organization independently. Find the official contact information yourself and call or message through that channel. Do not use a phone number, link, QR code, or wallet address supplied by the requester.
  3. Check the investment and destination. Research the firm and platform using sources outside the platform itself. Do not treat testimonials, an account balance, or apparent profits as independent proof. Registration is not a guarantee against fraud.
  4. Ask someone you trust to review the request. Share the details with a friend, family member, or financial professional before transferring money.
  5. Decline suspicious requests. Do not send stablecoins to a romantic contact or stranger you have only met online, and do not pay extra fees to unlock an account or recover funds.

The practical test is whether the person can be verified through a channel you found yourself, whether you understand and independently chose the destination, and whether the request relies on secrecy, urgency, guaranteed returns, or increasing deposits. If a withdrawal requires a new fee or tax payment, do not send more money.

What to do if you already sent stablecoins

  1. Stop communicating and do not send more. A request for another payment to release funds or recover a loss is another reason to stop.
  2. Contact the service you used immediately. Notify the exchange, wallet service, payment provider, or financial institution involved and explain that the transfer may be fraudulent. The FTC advises contacting the company or bank right away. Any intervention depends on the service and transaction; a reversal is not assured.
  3. Save evidence. Keep messages, profile details, website addresses, wallet addresses, transaction identifiers, receipts, and screenshots of account or withdrawal pages.
  4. Report the suspected fraud. In the United States, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The CFTC also identifies CFTC.gov/complaint and the FBI’s IC3.gov for relevant complaints. Report the account or contact to the platform where you first encountered them.
  5. Ignore paid recovery offers. Be wary of anyone who contacts you claiming they can retrieve the crypto for a fee. The CFTC says not to pay more money to get money back.

The CFTC warns that recovering funds sent overseas or through virtual currency is nearly impossible. Reporting is important, but it does not promise reimbursement. These reporting options are U.S. channels; procedures and legal remedies can differ elsewhere. The sources cited here do not establish recovery or reversal rules for every stablecoin, exchange, wallet, or peer-to-peer marketplace.

How widespread are crypto and romance investment scams?

Two U.S. figures illustrate the broader context, but neither measures losses from peer-to-peer stablecoin payments specifically. The FBI reported $5.8 billion in losses to crypto-asset-related investment frauds in 2024, as cited by the CFTC. Separately, an FTC alert in 2024 said romance scammers stole more than $1 billion in the prior year. These figures cover different categories and reporting periods and should not be combined or read as stablecoin-only totals.
