The company’s July 28, 2026 release is a useful example: second-quarter sales rose 7.5%, but Paint Stores Group margin slipped to 24.6% from 24.8% a year earlier.
Start with the quarter and comparison period
Identify the quarter, release date, and year-ago comparison before interpreting a percentage. Sherwin-Williams’ quarterly releases commonly compare results with the same quarter in the prior year. That is more informative than comparing two unlike quarters in a seasonal business. The figures below reflect the latest official results located for this article: Q2 2026, released July 28, 2026. Later releases may revise the outlook or provide newer results.
Read consolidated sales, then find the source of growth
Consolidated net sales show the company-wide revenue result; segment sales reveal where it came from. In Q2 2026, Sherwin-Williams reported consolidated net sales of $6.79 billion, up 7.5% from Q2 2025. That increase does not mean unit sales rose 7.5%: reported growth can reflect price, volume, acquisitions, currency translation, or product mix. The company’s Q2 release attributes growth drivers differently across its businesses, so use its segment commentary rather than assuming a single explanation. Sherwin-Williams Q2 2026 results.
Separate same-store sales from total segment sales
Paint Stores Group sales increased 5.1% in Q2 2026, while same-store sales increased 4.2%. Sherwin-Williams defines same-store sales as net sales from Paint Stores Group locations open more than twelve calendar months. The same-store figure focuses on established locations; total segment sales can also reflect factors such as new stores and acquisitions.

Ask whether growth came from price or volume
For Paint Stores Group, management said sales gains primarily reflected selling-price increases contributing a mid-single-digit percentage and low-single-digit sales-volume growth. These are the company’s stated explanations, not an independent measurement of the effects. Price-led growth can lift revenue even when the number of products sold grows more slowly.
Compare segment profit with margin
Segment profit measures the dollars earned by a business segment; segment margin expresses that profit as a share of the segment’s sales. Check both: profit can increase while margin declines if costs rise faster than revenue.

The sales and profit growth figures are year-over-year changes, not dollar amounts. The margin comparison shows a decline of 0.2 percentage points. Management said higher sales primarily drove segment profit growth, partly offset by moderately higher raw-material costs and costs to support sales, including additional sales representatives and stores. That explanation helps interpret the direction, but it does not quantify each cost’s individual effect.
Put pricing actions in context
CEO Heidi G. Petz said broad-based inflation continued across raw materials, energy, logistics, and packaging, and that the company was responding with pricing actions, including an announced 8% Paint Stores Group price increase effective September 1, 2026. This is management’s description of its response; the announcement alone does not establish how much of the increase customers will pay or its eventual effect on sales and margins.

Keep reported and adjusted earnings separate
Reported earnings reflect the accounting result under the company’s stated reporting basis. Adjusted earnings exclude specified items, which can include acquisition-related amortization or restructuring costs. An adjusted figure may help readers examine results apart from those items, but it is not interchangeable with reported earnings. When comparing periods, check which items were excluded in each period and whether the comparison uses the same basis.
Q1 2026 illustrates why the distinction matters: consolidated sales rose 6.8% to $5.67 billion, including a 1.7% favorable currency-translation impact, and the company also cited the Suvinil acquisition. Diluted EPS increased 7.5%, while adjusted diluted EPS increased 4.4%. Those are separate earnings series with different growth rates; do not substitute one for the other. Read guidance as a dated forecast
Guidance is management’s expectation at the time of the release. In its July 28, 2026 results, Sherwin-Williams expected Q3 consolidated sales to rise mid-to-high single digits and raised its full-year 2026 sales outlook to mid-to-high-single-digit growth. It forecast full-year diluted EPS of $10.92–$11.32 and adjusted diluted EPS of $11.80–$12.20. The company said adjusted guidance excluded $0.81 per share of Valspar-related amortization and $0.07 per share of restructuring costs. These are forecasts and stated adjustments, not realized results; compare them with later company updates before relying on them.
Compare the new outlook with the old one
When a release says guidance was raised, look for the previous range and the assumptions behind the change. Then compare the range with the prior-year result on a like-for-like basis. Do not compare adjusted guidance with prior-year reported EPS without accounting for the exclusions; that can make expected growth look stronger or weaker than a comparable calculation would show.

Use earlier quarters to test the pattern
One quarter cannot establish a durable trend. Q4 2025 is a reminder to compare revenue and earnings: net sales increased 5.6%, while income before taxes increased 3.8%. The company attributed the profit increase principally to higher sales, partly offset by growth investments, Suvinil-related costs including higher interest expense, costs for new headquarters and research facilities, trademark impairment, restructuring actions, and foreign-currency transaction losses.
