Start with the company’s definition of refining margin, then test how crude quality, product mix, location, throughput, outages, costs and inventory or compliance effects shaped the reported result. Finally, connect earnings to cash flow, debt and a valuation based on results across the refining cycle—not just one unusually strong or weak year.
Start with operating earnings, not revenue growth
Refiners buy crude oil and other feedstocks, process them into products such as gasoline and diesel, and sell those products into markets. Because crude and product prices can rise together, revenue may increase without a corresponding improvement in the economics of converting feedstock into products. Segment operating income and the company’s own refining-margin measure are more useful starting points than sales growth alone.
Read the company’s definition and reconciliation of that measure before comparing it with another refiner. A per-barrel figure might represent gross margin, an adjusted margin, or an EBITDA measure, and may include or exclude operating expenses, distribution and logistics, inventory effects, derivatives, turnaround costs, depreciation or other items. HF Sinclair, CVR Energy and Marathon Petroleum use different measures and definitions in their filings; similar labels do not guarantee comparable calculations. See PBF Energy’s 2025 Form 10-K, HF Sinclair’s 2025 Annual Report, CVR Energy’s 2025 Annual Report and Marathon Petroleum’s 2025 Annual Report.
Understand what a crack spread can—and cannot—tell you
A crack spread is a benchmark estimate of the difference between crude or feedstock prices and refined-product prices. It can help indicate the broad market environment for converting crude into products, but it is not a refinery’s realized profit. Actual results depend on the refinery’s configuration and crude slate, product yields, location, feedstock differentials, operating and logistics costs, and inventory effects. Delek US describes crack spreads as approximate benchmarks in its 2024 Form 10-K.
#1 Best Overall
A rising benchmark spread may not translate into higher earnings for a particular company. Its crude may become more expensive relative to the benchmark; its product mix or location may capture less of the move; or lower throughput, downtime, higher costs, inventory valuation or compliance expenses may offset it. Use the benchmark as context, then look for the company’s explanation of how market movements translated into its own results.
Bridge the reported result to what changed
Compare the period’s operating performance with the prior period and separate the drivers. A company’s discussion should help you distinguish market movements from facility-specific and accounting effects. Check whether it identifies:

- It can be a gift option
- Changes in regional crack spreads and crude or feedstock differentials.
- Product slate and yields, including which products the refineries were positioned to make and sell.
- Throughput, utilization, planned turnarounds and unplanned outages.
- Operating, distribution and logistics costs.
- Inventory valuation and gains or losses on derivatives.
- Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) compliance obligations and associated Renewable Identification Number (RIN) costs.
These items can move reported earnings independently of a benchmark crack spread. PBF Energy’s 2025 Form 10-K describes favorable crack-spread movements alongside lower throughput and outages, as well as RFS compliance costs. CVR Energy’s 2025 Annual Report identifies turnaround volumes, RINs, inventory valuation and derivative effects among its performance drivers. PBF’s 2026 second-quarter Form 10-Q also illustrates that spreads, differentials, throughput and operating costs can vary over an interim period.
Read per-barrel results alongside volume and reliability
A per-barrel margin does not tell you how much total profit the refinery generated. Throughput—the amount of feedstock processed—affects how much margin can be converted into total earnings. An attractive per-barrel result can coexist with weaker total earnings if volumes fall during outages or turnarounds. Conversely, high utilization alone does not establish that the refiner is earning attractive margins or generating strong returns.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn its 2025 Annual Report, HF Sinclair reported refinery utilization of 89.1% for fiscal 2025, compared with 88.8% in 2024 and 83.7% in 2023. These are company- and year-specific figures, not a sector target. Use utilization and throughput to understand operating scale and reliability, then read them with the margin definition, outage commentary and costs.
Compare refiners only after aligning their measures
Before comparing two companies, use the same reporting period and establish what each reported number represents. A gross refining margin and an adjusted EBITDA per barrel are not interchangeable simply because both are expressed per barrel.
Rank #4
| Company and period | Reported measure | Value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| PBF Energy, fiscal 2025 | Gross refining margin per barrel of throughput | $7.72 | Company-defined gross refining margin; not directly comparable with Marathon’s adjusted EBITDA per barrel. |
| PBF Energy, fiscal 2025 | Gross refining margin per barrel of throughput, excluding special items | $7.89 | Excludes special items; PBF reported $7.51 on this basis for fiscal 2024. |
| Marathon Petroleum, fiscal 2025 | Refining & Marketing adjusted EBITDA per barrel | $5.63 | Marathon-defined segment measure; the same table reported $5.33 for 2024 and $12.94 for 2023. |
The figures come from PBF Energy’s 2025 Form 10-K and Marathon Petroleum’s 2025 Annual Report. They illustrate differences in reporting definitions and yearly performance; they are not directly comparable measures, a sector forecast or an investment recommendation. When evaluating competitors, also compare crude slate and differentials, product yields, location, operating and logistics costs, throughput, outages, and inventory, derivative and compliance effects.

Refinery earnings can swing with market conditions and operating disruptions, so a single year’s EBITDA is a weak stand-in for sustainable earning power. A low valuation multiple calculated from peak earnings can make a stock look cheaper than it would on normalized earnings; a multiple based on trough earnings can make it look more expensive than its longer-run capacity suggests.

For a company-specific debt assessment, review its balance sheet, cash generation and financing needs together. Examine:
- Cash and total debt, including the company’s definitions of reported or adjusted debt.
- Interest expense and the earnings or cash available to cover it.
- Debt maturities and refinancing needs.
- Liquidity sources, such as cash and available borrowing capacity, as disclosed by the issuer.
- Capital commitments and expected maintenance or turnaround spending.
- Cash generation under weaker refining-margin conditions, not just the latest period.
A valuation multiple is meaningful only when its earnings measure and period are clear. Specify whether it uses reported or adjusted earnings, which period it covers, and how you have treated unusually strong or weak conditions. The available company operating disclosures do not establish a current, complete debt, share-price or valuation comparison for a named issuer, so they cannot support a universal target multiple or a conclusion about whether a particular refinery stock is attractive.
