How to Read Nifty and Sensex Gainers and Losers Lists

A gainers-and-losers list ranks movement within a defined market scope and period. Learn how to read its timestamp, comparison basis, price change, percentage change, and volume.

A “top gainer” is a security that rose the most within a particular list and time period; a “top loser” fell the most. Before interpreting either label, check which securities the list covers, when its figures were captured, and what price or close the change is measured against. The ranking describes past movement over that stated period—it is not a recommendation or forecast.

First check what the list covers

“Nifty” or “Sensex” in a page title does not, by itself, tell you that the list includes every stock on the exchange. A list may cover constituents of a particular index, a broader set of securities, or a filtered selection. NSE’s market-activity reports, for example, distinguish Nifty securities, Nifty Next 50 securities, and other securities. Check the page heading and filters before treating a ranking as representative of a wider market. NSE’s description of market-activity reports explains the categories used in its daily report.

The ranking rule also depends on the specific page. BSE says its day’s top gainers and losers are ranked by percentage gain or loss against the previous close in its market overview. Do not assume that every exchange page or third-party list uses the same universe, period, or sorting rule.

Read the time and comparison basis

Find the timestamp or status before comparing figures. A live ranking can change as trades occur; a closing list reflects a completed session. NSE’s Capital Market Snapshot labels its timing “As on IST,” while its live equity page presents market data that may update during trading. Two lists captured at different times are not a like-for-like comparison. NSE Capital Market Snapshot and NSE Live Equity Market show examples of these market-data views.

Next, identify the comparison value. For a daily list, that is often the previous session’s close, but check the page’s labels and notes. BSE’s Sensex page, for example, lists previous close alongside current value and change.

Understand change and percentage change

Change: the rupee or point movement

“Change” is the arithmetic difference between the current value and the stated comparison value. A positive number means the price or index level is higher; a negative number means it is lower. For a share, the change is usually shown in rupees; for an index, it is shown in points.

Rank #2

% change: the relative movement

“% change” expresses that movement relative to the comparison value, making it easier to compare securities with very different share prices. For example, in a hypothetical unadjusted calculation, a share moving from ₹100 to ₹105 has risen ₹5, or 5%. Another moving from ₹1,000 to ₹1,020 has risen ₹20, or 2%. The second share has the larger rupee gain, but the first has the larger percentage gain.

When the displayed prices are unadjusted and no corporate action affects the comparison, calculate percentage change as: (current price − comparison price) ÷ comparison price × 100. Use the exchange’s displayed percentage where its adjustment rules apply. NSE notes that for specified corporate actions, its percentage change is calculated against the adjusted ex-date price, so a raw close-to-close calculation may not match. The note names dividends, bonuses, consolidations, rights issues, and face-value splits. NSE’s live equity market page provides the adjustment note.

Know what volume does—and does not—tell you

Volume is the number of shares traded during the period shown. It indicates trading activity, not whether a business is strong, a share is fairly valued, or its price is likely to rise. NSE reports volume in shares and traded value separately in ₹ crores; those measures are not interchangeable. A high-volume stock is not automatically a “good buy.” Check the labels and period on the specific list rather than treating volume as a quality or forecast signal. NSE’s live equity market page displays these fields.

Compare two entries or lists fairly

Before deciding which security performed better, line up the measures that make the comparison meaningful:

  • Scope: Confirm that both lists cover the same index or security universe.
  • Time: Match the measurement period and timestamp.
  • Reference: Check that both use the same comparison close or other stated basis.
  • Movement: Compare percentage change for relative performance and absolute change for rupees or index points.
  • Activity: Read volume and traded value as separate measures, over the stated period.
  • Adjustments: Check whether a corporate-action adjustment affects the reported percentage.

A leaderboard is a snapshot of performance within its chosen scope and period. It does not establish why a security moved or what it will do next.
