Calculate it by multiplying the number of outstanding shares by the current share price. It is a measure of market-valued size—not a measure of revenue, profit, assets, or whether a share is a good investment.
What market capitalisation means on the NGX
The NGX Glossary of Financial Terms defines market capitalisation as “the total market value of all of a company’s outstanding shares.” In practical terms, it estimates what those shares are worth at the quoted market price. NGX describes it as a way the investment community gauges company size, rather than using sales or total assets.

The calculation is:
Market capitalisation = outstanding shares × current share price
For example, a hypothetical company with 1 billion outstanding shares and a share price of ₦10 has an implied market capitalisation of ₦10 billion. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a current NGX company figure. See the NGX Glossary of Financial Terms for the definition and formula.

How to calculate and compare a Nigerian stock’s market cap
Check both inputs
Use the share price and outstanding-share count that apply to the same observation date. A price change can move market capitalisation even if the number of shares has not changed; a change in outstanding shares can move it even if the price is unchanged. For comparisons over time, establish whether a corporate action or other change affected the share count.
Keep units and basis consistent
- Confirm whether the price is quoted in naira or kobo and convert consistently before multiplying.
- Check whether a share-count figure is reported in units, thousands, or millions.
- Use the same date basis for price and share count, and note any corporate action that changes shares outstanding.
- When comparing companies, use the same currency and units for both figures.
These checks matter because a mismatched date or unit can produce a misleading comparison, even when the multiplication is correct.

What market cap can—and cannot—tell you
Market cap gives a price-based view of a company’s size in the market. It does not tell you how much the company sells, owns, earns, or generates in cash. NGX distinguishes market capitalisation from sales and total assets; investors should examine those operating measures separately when assessing a business.

Market cap alone also does not establish that a share is cheap, liquid, safe, or suitable for a particular investor. A larger figure is not proof of stronger business performance or a better investment. NGX notes that listed shares may rise or fall in value and that dividend payments vary among companies. The market-cap figure itself does not guarantee a return or dividend. More context is available on NGX’s investing information page.
Market cap is not free float or a listing-quality verdict
Total market capitalisation uses outstanding shares; it should not be confused with free float—the shares available for public trading—or with trading activity. A company’s total value can be large while its freely tradable portion or trading activity differs. Compare free float and trading activity as separate measures.
NGX listing requirements include market-capitalisation thresholds for some listing categories. The stated thresholds for certain categories at listing are based on issue price and issued share capital, and the requirements address public float separately. Those thresholds are eligibility criteria, not current market values or assessments of business quality. Consult the NGX listing requirements for the relevant category and criteria.

Where to find official NGX data
The NGX Data Library lists market-capitalisation and shares-outstanding resources. Its X-Factbook includes company profiles, five-year financial performance, corporate-action history, market statistics, and index-performance information. Check the observation date, currency, units, and share-count basis before using any figure in a comparison.
For released financials, free-float deficiencies, listing-rule breaches, and other compliance information, consult the NGX X-Compliance Report. These materials can provide context that a market-cap number cannot.
