How to Read a New-Car Window Sticker (Monroney Label)

A new-car window sticker identifies the vehicle and explains its factory equipment, MSRP and standardized efficiency data. Here’s how to read it—and what to verify separately in a dealer quote.

Start by matching the sticker’s VIN to the vehicle. Then use the label to verify its configuration, factory equipment and manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP); it is not the final price you will pay. For the actual deal, ask for a written, itemized out-the-door quote.

What a new-car window sticker tells you

A new-car window sticker, also called a Monroney label, identifies a vehicle and describes its equipment, manufacturer pricing and standardized fuel-economy or energy-use information. Safety ratings and parts-content disclosures may also appear, sometimes on separate labels. The exact layout and wording vary by automaker.

Use the label to understand what the manufacturer says about that particular vehicle. Use the dealer’s written purchase documents to understand the transaction being offered.

First, verify that the sticker belongs to the car

Compare the VIN on the label with the VIN on the vehicle, then check the model year, make, model, trim, color and powertrain. A VIN mismatch or a configuration that does not match the car is a reason to pause and ask the dealer to resolve the discrepancy before relying on the sticker.

This check matters even when two cars share a model and trim: their factory-installed options and packages may differ. The label should describe the specific vehicle, not just a representative version of the model.

Separate standard equipment from priced options

The standard-equipment section lists items included with the trim’s base price. Factory options and packages are typically listed separately and may add to the price. Automakers use different layouts and names, so look for whether each item is described as standard, optional or separately priced.

Dealership-installed accessories and other additions can appear on a separate dealer addendum rather than the manufacturer’s original label. Check what is already installed and ask whether each charge is for a factory option, a dealer-installed item or something else.

Understand the price block—and get the real transaction total

The MSRP is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, not a required selling price and not automatically the amount due at signing. Read the price block as a set of components:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Base vehicle price: the stated price for the vehicle in its listed trim before separately priced options.
  • Options and packages: factory equipment added to the base configuration, usually with separate prices.
  • Destination or delivery charge: the charge shown by the manufacturer for delivering the vehicle.
  • Total MSRP: the manufacturer’s stated total after the listed vehicle and option charges.

The factory label does not include every factor that can affect your deal. Available incentives, taxes, title and registration fees, dealer addenda and market adjustments may change the proposed transaction. Capital One’s guide to reading a new-car window sticker explains these common distinctions and the role of dealer addenda.

Ask for a written, itemized out-the-door quote that identifies the vehicle price, each add-on, taxes, government fees, incentives and any optional products. Do not assume a charge is a factory option just because it appears on paperwork displayed beside the original label.

Read the fuel-economy panel as an estimate

EPA supplies the fuel-economy data used on new-car and light-truck labels. A gasoline-vehicle panel commonly displays city, highway and combined miles per gallon (MPG), with combined MPG useful for a quick comparison. Depending on the label, it may also show gallons per 100 miles, estimated annual fuel cost, a five-year comparison with an average new vehicle, greenhouse-gas information and a smog rating. EPA’s interactive gasoline-label guide explains the figures and the assumptions behind the cost estimate.

These numbers are standardized estimates, not promises about what you will get. Driving habits and conditions affect actual results, and the label’s fine print explains assumptions used for cost comparisons. Fuel-economy and emissions ratings are separate from crash-test star ratings; a high score in one category does not imply a high score in the other. EPA provides background on fuel-economy labeling and the data used on the labels.

Interpret EV and plug-in-hybrid figures in their own terms

Electric-vehicle labels can display several measures that answer different questions. EPA’s interactive electric-vehicle label guide explains the figures and their assumptions.

  • MPGe: miles per gallon equivalent, an energy-content measure that helps compare vehicles using different energy sources.
  • kWh per 100 miles: electricity consumption over a stated distance; a lower figure means less electricity is used for that distance under the test basis.
  • Estimated range: the distance estimate shown for the vehicle, not a guarantee of the distance you will cover in your own use.
  • Estimated 240-volt charge time: a charging estimate based on the label’s stated assumptions, not a universal charging-time promise.
  • Estimated annual energy cost: a comparison figure whose assumptions, including annual mileage and energy prices, are printed on the label.

The panel may also show city, highway and combined MPGe, greenhouse-gas and smog ratings, and a QR code linking to additional EPA information. MPGe is useful for cross-technology comparisons; kWh per 100 miles is more direct when considering electricity consumption. Check the printed assumptions before using range, charging or cost figures to plan your budget.

Check safety ratings without treating a blank as a failure

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program provides crash-protection and rollover information for vehicles it tests. A sticker may show applicable ratings, but a blank rating area does not mean the vehicle received zero stars; it means the label does not provide a rating there.

Look up current NHTSA results for the specific vehicle and model year, and make sure the result matches the vehicle you are considering. NHTSA’s Part 583 American Automobile Labeling Act reports page also points readers to NCAP data for vehicles tested through the program.

Understand parts-content and assembly disclosures

American Automobile Labeling Act disclosures describe U.S. and Canadian parts content and manufacturing locations. NHTSA says this information is based on manufacturer submissions. It may appear on the Monroney price label, on the fuel-economy label or on a separate label, so do not assume there is one fixed location or that every disclosure is part of the same sticker.

Compare two vehicles in a consistent order

When deciding between two cars, compare like with like. A lower sticker total alone may not tell you which vehicle is the better value if the configurations or quoted transaction costs differ.

  1. Identity and configuration: Compare model year, trim, drivetrain, engine or battery, and VIN-specific options.
  2. Equipment: Separate standard features from priced factory packages and dealer add-ons.
  3. Manufacturer price: Compare base MSRP, options, destination or delivery charge, and total MSRP.
  4. Transaction price: Compare written out-the-door quotes with taxes, fees, incentives and optional products itemized.
  5. Operating-cost estimates: Compare combined MPG or MPGe and gallons or kWh per 100 miles, while checking each label’s assumptions.
  6. EV usability: Compare the stated range and charge-time estimates in light of the label’s test and charging assumptions.
  7. Safety evidence: Compare available NHTSA ratings for the exact model year; keep “not available” distinct from a low score.
  8. Origin disclosures: Review assembly and parts-content information if it matters to your decision.

If the sticker and dealer paperwork do not match

  1. Confirm that the VIN on the car, manufacturer sticker and paperwork is the same.
  2. Identify which document is the original manufacturer label and which is a dealer addendum or other quote.
  3. Ask the dealer to itemize each difference and identify it as a factory option, dealer-installed accessory, market adjustment, tax, government fee or optional product.
  4. Request an updated written out-the-door quote and review the purchase documents before signing.

The manufacturer label describes the vehicle and its stated MSRP; the dealer’s written offer and signed purchase documents describe the transaction. For more on how label sections and addenda are commonly presented, see Edmunds’ window-sticker guide.
