Find the person most closely connected to the role, use the least intrusive LinkedIn message option available, and send a short note with one specific reason for contacting them and one modest request. Follow the job posting’s directions first: a direct message is not appropriate for every employer or hiring manager.
Who should you contact?
Start with the job posting and the employer’s application instructions. If direct contact is not invited—or the posting says not to contact the employer—follow those instructions. Otherwise, look for the person who appears responsible for the team or role, such as the hiring manager, a relevant department lead, or the recruiter listed on the posting. Check that their current role and company make them a plausible contact; do not assume someone is the hiring manager based only on a title.
Make the purpose clear in your note. If you are unsure whether you have found the right person, say so and ask whether they are the appropriate contact or can point you to one.
Which LinkedIn message route should you use?
Use the least intrusive route that LinkedIn makes available. LinkedIn’s options depend on your connection to the person, their settings, and your account or product.

You do not necessarily need Premium: a connection message is free, and some non-connection message requests may be available. If LinkedIn does not offer a suitable route, respect that boundary rather than trying to get around the recipient’s preferences.
What should you write?
Keep the message focused on the role and the reason you chose this person. LinkedIn’s Recruiter guidance—written for recruiters contacting candidates—recommends personalization, brevity, a clear purpose, and a conversation-starting question. - Name the role and company so the recipient knows what you are referring to.
- Include one genuine detail about the job, team, or recipient’s work.
- Give one relevant piece of evidence about your experience or fit.
- Make one small, clear request, such as a brief conversation or guidance on the appropriate contact.
- Use a polite close and avoid attaching a long pitch or repeating your résumé.
Example after applying
Hi [Name] — I applied for [role] at [company]. I was interested in [specific project, team focus, or role detail], and my experience with [relevant evidence] seems closely related. If you’re the right person to ask, would you be open to a brief conversation about the team’s priorities? Thanks for considering it.
Replace each bracket with a real, specific detail. Do not imply a relationship or familiarity that you do not have, ask for a job outright, or request substantial unpaid work.

A concise subject can identify the role, for example, “Question about [role] at [company].” Keep the body centered on your specific reason and request rather than using the available space to send a full cover letter.

When and how should you follow up?
LinkedIn’s job-seeker guidance suggests waiting about a week before following up and moving on gracefully after two attempts without a reply. For a hiring-manager message, a restrained adaptation is to send one short follow-up after about a week, then stop unless the person responds or the posting invites further contact. A follow-up can simply restate the role, briefly refer to your earlier note, and ask once more whether they are the right person to contact. Do not send repeated messages across multiple LinkedIn channels to force a response.
