How to Protect Yourself From ATM Shimmers

ATM shimmers hide inside chip-card readers, so a normal-looking machine is not a guarantee. Learn practical steps to reduce risk and respond quickly to suspicious activity.

To reduce the risk of ATM shimming, use a well-lit, maintained machine, skip any ATM with suspicious or damaged parts, cover the keypad while entering your PIN, and monitor your account for unfamiliar transactions. These steps lower risk but cannot guarantee an ATM is safe: a shimmer sits inside the card reader and may not be visible from the outside.

What an ATM shimmer does—and what it does not do

A shimmer is a thin electronic device placed inside an ATM’s chip-card reader to intercept or manipulate data as a chip card communicates with the terminal. It differs from traditional skimming, which targets information on a card’s magnetic stripe, as the American Bankers Association explains.

PIN theft is a separate part of the risk. A hidden camera or altered keypad may capture your PIN, while a shimmer targets the chip-reader interface. Protecting your PIN helps address that separate threat; it does not prevent a shimmer from collecting card data. The Michigan Department of Attorney General warns that shimmers can be difficult to detect without dismantling the terminal. A normal-looking ATM is therefore not proof that its reader is uncompromised.

Before inserting your card: choose and inspect the ATM

Choose a visible, maintained location

When practical, use a well-lit ATM inside a bank or another maintained location rather than a remote or poorly maintained stand-alone machine. Official consumer guidance describes these choices as reducing exposure, not eliminating risk. Be aware of people nearby and avoid distractions while you transact.

Check for visible signs of alteration

  • Look for a card reader or keypad that is loose, crooked, scratched, damaged, or out of place compared with the rest of the machine.
  • If the card slot or keypad looks suspicious, do not insert your card. Do not touch, remove, or test a suspected device; report the concern to the bank or machine owner and, where appropriate, local police.
  • Do not treat a visual inspection as a way to rule out a shimmer. It may be hidden inside the reader, and consumer guidance does not establish a reliable method for inspecting the interior of a chip slot.

While using the ATM: protect your PIN and stop if something feels wrong

  1. Cover the keypad fully with your free hand while entering your PIN. This can block a nearby camera’s view, but it does not stop a device inside the reader from intercepting card data.
  2. Pay attention to the card insertion and the terminal’s behavior. If insertion feels wrong, a keypad seems altered, or the ATM behaves unexpectedly, stop the transaction if you can do so safely and use another machine.
  3. Keep the transaction private. Stay alert to people nearby and avoid letting someone distract you while you enter your PIN or handle your card.

After the transaction: monitor your account and act quickly

  • Put your card away promptly and review transactions regularly. Turn on your bank’s text or email alerts if available.
  • If the ATM keeps your card—even after you cancel—contact your bank or card issuer immediately using a trusted contact method, such as the number on your bank card or official app. Do not rely on a phone number posted on a machine if you are unsure it is genuine.
  • If you spot an unauthorized transaction or suspect your card data was compromised, contact the issuer promptly to freeze or replace the card and ask how to dispute the transaction. Report a suspected device to the machine owner or local police as appropriate. Procedures, deadlines, and legal protections depend on your country and account type.

Does a chip card, contactless sleeve, or PIN cover prevent shimming?

No single one of these measures makes an ATM transaction immune to compromise. A chip card is generally safer than relying on magnetic-stripe use in many payment settings, but the FBI cautions that magnetic-stripe data remains vulnerable; an EMV chip does not make shimming impossible. Covering your PIN helps against camera capture, not chip-reader interception.

RFID-blocking sleeves address a different concern: contactless card communication. They are not an established safeguard against a shimmer inserted into an ATM’s card reader. Likewise, a PIN shield cannot prevent chip-data interception. The practical protections are choosing a suitable ATM, declining to use one that appears altered, shielding your PIN, and monitoring your account.

What U.S. consumers should know about unauthorized transfers

In the United States, the FDIC’s article on protecting yourself from debit-card fraud notes that the Electronic Funds Transfer Act and Regulation E limit consumer liability for some unauthorized electronic fund transfers. The article dates to Winter 2018 and was last updated August 15, 2023. Your rights and deadlines depend on the circumstances and account involved, so contact your bank immediately and consult current issuer and CFPB guidance. This U.S.-specific note should not be assumed to describe protections in other countries.
